Beautiful house, wonderful hosts, relaxing holida

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year at Chamballan. 1 week in 2014 wasn't enough so this year we had 2 weeks. Perfect retreat for good family time, we have 3 kids aged between 10 and 15. Lots to do and places to visit locally, although we preferred staying put! Highly recommended, we will be back!

Wonderful party house

  • 5 of 5

Robin and I came here to celebrate Robins birthday with friends and it could not have been better. Lucy and Jean- Noel are wonderful hosts who made us feel as if the chateau was ours to enjoy with beautiful meals in the huge bohemian kitchen and games of pool in the billiard room with a crackling fire in the sitting room and walks in the parks that surrounded us.

Heaven and we are planning our next party there now

From the Owner

This area is wonderfully unspoilt and yet it is within an hour or two of so many must-see attractions such as The Mont St Michel, Angers, Nantes, Rennes and the Loire Valley chateaux. The space is incredible for children to enjoy the kind of childhood fun that is increasingly hard to find - making dens, wild flowers galore, catching fish and tadpoles etc. Dogs love it too! The many reception areas means it is an ideal multi generational gathering place. We fell in love with the romantic history of the chateau and its run-down grandeur. It has a wonderfully friendly, unprecious feel but with the comfort of bathrooms, hot water and a vast modern, well equipped kitchen.

The ancient market town of Châteaubriant is 5km away from the Château and has a great market on Wednesdays along with the famous September market that is the oldest in Europe (since 1060). If you want to stay put, the grocer in Rougé is happy to deliver and neighbouring farms sell local produce. The baker comes four times a week with fresh baguettes and croissants. Châteaubriant has excellent butchers and vegetable shops plus all the usual supermarkets and boasts an independent cinema, a theatre, horse-race track and a vast indoor public swimming pool (olympic size) .The spectacular architecture of the castle reflects the historical struggle between France and Brittany. Riding is available in Rougé. Cyclers and walkers can explore the 13km Voie Verte (former railway track running between Rougé and Chateaubriant) and Teillay forest and its leisure lake with sailing and water sports.
