lovely location

Our first visit to this area of Italy ...and not disappointed.

Roomy, clean and well equipped apartment ...owner helpful and informative.

Otranto is lovely .....beach, old town, countryside, full of character .......everything close by. Plenty of other local towns and sights to sample by car or train (or even bike).

We particularly enjoyed our evening walks along the seafront into the old town.

But don't expect everyone to speak English!

Could happily have stayed longer.

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

A car is not necessary for Otranto as our apartment is only 2 minutes to the sea wall, 5 minutes to sandy coves and 15 minutes walk to the centre.

There is also a private beach just a few minutes from the apartment where sunbeds and parasols can be hired daily.

We do recommend a car for visiting Alimini Beach and Gallipoli and to explore the coastline to Santa Maria Di Leuca. Lecce can be visited by either bus or train from Otranto if required.

Travel:

Brindisi Airport is approximately 1 hours drive from Otranto whilst Bari Airport is just over 2 hours. Hiring a car is advisable and can be prebooked at both these airports with Hertz, Avis, Europcar, National and Maggiore and a few other companies. For those wishing to take pubic transport, buses and trains are available from Brindisi to Otranto via Lecce and Maglie (train station 15 mins from apt). Alternatively a taxi service is available and will cost approximately 100-120 euros to Otranto.

Distances:

Lecce 'The Florence of the South' is 45k inland from Otranto and is enriched with many examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture and the ruins of an amphitheatre.

Along the coastal road to Santa Maria Di Leuca (50k and the tip of the 'heel' of Italy) you will drive through Santa Cesarea and Castro and discover more beaches and coves.

North of Otranto is Alimini, which has a large freshwater lake suitable for walks and picnics and a long sandy beach which offers watersports in Jul-Au

Further Details:

Otranto lies on the Adriatic (Salento) coast and is the most easterly town in Italy. It is steeped in history and has been influenced by the Turks, Crusaders, Byzantines and Normans.

Otranto has an impressive Argonese castle and a charming walled historic quarter where you can meander through its many narrow cobbled streets. Here you will discover bars and restaurants tucked away where you can try the local dishes and wines.

Otranto has an 11th century cathedral with a vast and unique mosaic floor depicting 'The Tree Of Life' and a Moorish crypt below with more than 40 columns.

The cathedral chapel holds the skulls and bones of the 800 martyrs of Otranto who were slain by the Turks for their Christian beliefs.

If you wish to venture further, Alberobello is approximately 90 mins drive north but well worth a visit to see the 'Trulli ' houses. Also there are the Castellana Caves in the same region.

Otranto has many restaurants and pizzerias but visiting Masserie and Agridturismos in the countryside is another way to experience tradional home grown cuisine.

There are weekday markets held in various nearby towns selling a variety of items from clothes, shoes, pottery and household items.

Otranto market is held on Wednesday mornings near the harbour and there is a much larger one on Saturday mornings at Maglie (18k).

For go-kart enthusiasts, the La Conca circuit is only 10k from Otranto.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The patio doors allow plenty of light and sunshine to flood the lounge. Since we are on the 2nd floor and when there is a breeze, the fresh air flows through the whole apartment. The balcony is ideal for that early morning cappuccino or dining in the evening as the sun sets. There is no air-conditioning or internet access available. We would appreciate No Smoking in the apartment and no pets, thank you. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are provided and can be washed in the washing machine if required. There is an iron, ironing board and clothes airer. There is an additional fee of £30 or €35 towards the cleaning on departure. Other: The balcony has a table and chairs for eating 'al fresco' or enjoying 'sundowners' in the evening. There are 3 canopies along the length of the balcony to shade it from the afternoon sun. There is ample room for the clothes airer to dry any washing.
