About Ian and Christine Royle

After successful business careers and many years of long days and long commutes, in 2002 the opportunity arose for us to make the lifestyle change which we had both dreamed of and worked for.

In July 2005 after numerous property viewings and the difficulties of negotiating the property market both in terms of buying and selling, we finally moved to Hall Farm Wetton.

We are never happier than when we have visitors to our cottages as we love to share our wonderful location.

We are always happy to give advice on walks or what to do and see but equally we understand that some of our guests simply want the peace and solitude which our location offers.

Ian and Christine Royle purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Ian and Christine Royle chose Derbyshire Dales

We had first viewed the house and cottages in 2003 and had been immediately captivated by its stunning location and its potential for development. Ian had walked the area many times since the late sixties (and spent many a happy hour hour in the Royal Oak Wetton) and considered the Staffordshire Moorlands one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of the Peak District. Christine, a keen amateur gardener, was blown away by the potential for the gardens and was undaunted by the six foot high beds of nettles which formed the borders.

Nine years on it is still work-in-progress and will always be so as we strive to continually improve the properties and their environment and consequently the experience for our guests who incidentally have often become our friends too.

What makes this cottage unique

We never tire of the wonderful view of the Manifold Valley and Thors cave which has remained unchanged for thousands of years and every day we feel privileged to live in such a wonderful environment and most of all we love the opportunity of sharing it with our guests.

Our guests too love the peace and tranquility of our location yet the tourist hotspots of the Peak District are all within easy reach.

You can walk or cycle from the door, explore the surrounding area or simply watch the local bird life fighting for the best spot on the birdfeeders, whatever your preference we are sure that you will fall in love with Hall Farm as we did.

Cozy Cottage - A Real Gem!

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful little cottage right in the heart of the Peak District. There are literally dozens of fantastic walks to do within ten miles - including the trek up to see Thor's Cave (a definite must!), the Manifold Valley Rail Trail, and Dovedale. The cottage was in a perfect spot for us, very centrally located, and with a parking area on the property, it was incredibly convenient. As an added bonus, the town pub, Ye Olde Royal Oak, has fabulous food, an excellent offering of craft beers, and is within walking distance - should one opt to have a pint or two.

The cottage itself felt very homey and cozy, and after a long day out seeing the sights, it was a joy to snuggle up under the duvet for a good night's sleep! There was a full kitchen, equipped with a good supply of dishes, pots, pans and utensils, and a refrigerator. There wasn't a freezer in the cottage, but the shared utility room had a fridge, which we were invited to use. Also in the utility room were a washer and dryer, which was fantastic, as we didn't need to bring two weeks worth of clothing with us. There was also WiFi available, so we were able to check email and search for restaurants and places to go (not that we needed to - there was a very large binder in the cottage with dozens and dozens of pamphlets and brochures). For anyone with children, there is also a play barn and some playground equipment in the back garden, all of which looked very nice (though we didn't spend too much time investigating, as it was just the two of us).

Our hosts were very welcoming and friendly, and did everything possible to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. The cottage was kept in immaculate condition, and we loved every minute of our trip.

If you're looking for a place to relax, unwind, and enjoy less hustle and bustle, this would be the ideal retreat for you. Two massive thumbs up! ^_^

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review Grindon cottage, that you enjoyed your first visit to the U.K. and that the cottage had everything you needed for your stay. We know that aside form the local walks and attractions of the Peak District our central location enabled you to travel as far as Hadrian's Wall in Northumbria and Caernarfon Castle in Wales on your days out before returning to our peaceful cottages in the hills. In the words of a previous guest " the setting is straight out of a fairy tale, tranquility at its best"
