Luxury Dorset Farmhouse - Large Grounds & Beautiful Countryside Location

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
Farmhouse near Puddletown, Dorset - a rural paradise close to the Jurassic Coast with dogs welcome!

Our warm, beautiful Listed Grade 2 traditional Dorset farmhouse, with wood panelled hall and massive newly-restored chimneys, comfortably sleeps 14, and is set in large grounds, part of a 700 acre estate, perfectly secluded and surrounded by rolling countryside. Located in the heart of Hardy Country and 20 minutes from the sea, it's the perfect location for a fabulous family holiday, or groups planning a restful get-together. Dogs are welcome and we are well-equipped for babies and toddlers.

England's first natural World Heritage Site; The Jurassic Coast, is only 20 minutes away, Lulworth Cove, Monkey World and the Tank Museum nearby are very popular. Enjoy BBQ and cream-teas in the garden or hire a private chef to cook for you in our large country-style kitchen, complete with Aga. Play croquet, giant pik-a-stix and Twister on the lawn with your family, or enjoy a spot of lawn cricket with the games kit from our large outdoor toy chest. With a huge library of contemporary fiction, wifi and a DVD collection, and loads of board games, you'll be spoilt for choice for indoor activities. (Junior snooker table on request) Choose something from our pile of sheet music and have a go on the piano! (Full Premier drum kit also available on request!) On chilly nights light the wood-burners in both sitting rooms, and snuggle down into our comfy, cosy sofas. We are a short walk from Puddletown Forest, great for mountain biking, hiking and bird watching; see if you can hear the ravens! A network of footpaths lead from the house, one through to the Blue Vinney pub in Puddletown where you can enjoy really great food, and maybe pick up the Sunday papers from our excellent village shop. Our south-facing terrace with climbing wisteria and gas barbecue is lovely for al fresco meals. There is a library/TV room, elegant sitting room, dining room with wood burner and banqueting table for 14, huge flagged-floor kitchen with walk-in larder, Aga, American fridge freezer with ice cube dispenser, and an additional fridge and freezer in the pantry. 5 large double bedrooms (two of which are Laura Ashley designed), one with a single bed in, one large twin, plus one small but sweet single, with amazing views. Two large bathrooms both with walk-in showers as well as bath, and a downstairs loo.

Loads of parking and extensive lawns front and back for outdoor activities, the back lawn enclosed for safe play and private sunbathing. Restored Shepherds' Hut for children to play or for adults to have a quiet drink.

About the Owner

My name is Caroline and I own the Farmhouse along with my two grown-up daughters. I have three grandsons. I have lived in the house since 1990 but it has been in my family since 1862. It is part of a small estate, including the farm and woods.

I have downsized to a smaller property less than a mile away, and enjoy welcoming guests to the house which still has all our family furniture and portraits and plenty of books, toys and games. I personally supervise the changeovers and always provide fresh flowers and meet the guests if they wish.

We love the house to bits and our visitors seem to, as well, especially multi-generational family groups.

A fantastic house with everything you could need i

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed with two other families (including 7 children ranging from 3 - 11) for a long weekend. The house provided plenty of space and great facilities for our whole group. The gardens are stunning as is the surrounding countryside and Puddletown Forest has great walks. Our dogs loved it too....! Would definitely recommend.

Grand comfortable house would recommend

  • 5 of 5

We spent a family weekend here to celebrate a birthday with 12 adults, one child, two babies in our party. It was grand but homely and the ideal base for four generations to get together.

There is plenty of space for everyone but a lovely layout so that you don't feel left out by being in any particular area.

There are three large dinning tables and we could eat together at all of them - a causal meal in the kitchen, more formality in the dinning room and outside when the weather is good. The gardens provide great spaces for games or a stroll, they were safe for young children and the shepherds hut was an interesting feature that we all had a look in.

The house was clean and well equipped. There are plenty of games, books, DVDs etc, even music sheets for the piano you can use. Everyone said their bedrooms were comfortable and all except the single room were large (some of them huge).

The owner is friendly and helpful and it was easy to find out information before we went.

We had a great time, the house was perfect for us and we had all round agreement that we want to go back.

Beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful house for a family get-together. Really warm and comfortable with excellent dining and lounging facilities. Very quiet deep in the Dorset countryside. The kitchen is well equipped, although the hob was a bit of a mystery. There are no en-suites but the 2 bathrooms are clean and spacious. Excellent and responsive owner who was easy to deal with. Would definitely use again.

This was a beautiful property. We stay in a property in Dorset every year and this one was by far the best simply because the owner had thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable. The furnishings are a mix of old and new but well kept together, towels, cleaning stuff and even water was provided. Carpets were plush and the garden space was just wonderful to sit outside with a glass of wine and the property is totally private. The owner, Caroline was lovely, I mean..really. She was clear in all her communication, friendly and you can see that she has successfully maintained the history of this family home. A big plus point..it is a very late checkout with no additional cost - I've never found that in any place that I have stayed. I would love to visit again!

A homely well equipped spacious farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

Ilsington Farmhouse was all we expected and more besides. We hired the property for three nights in July to celebrate my 60th birthday. The party consisted of 11 adults, 2 children and two babies. We were all very well accommodated in the spacious farmhouse, with plenty of space so that we didn't feel on top of one another. The massive kitchen was well equipped with lots of crockery, cutlery and space.....and I loved my first experience of cooking on the Aga for which there were good instructions! There was loads of fridge and freezer space - we brought all the food for the 14 of us for the whole weekend and there was ample room for it all. There was a large American fridge/freezer in the kitchen and a smaller upright fridge/freezer in the utility room.

The house is large and elegant. The furnishings are not new but not tatty either! We felt very comfortable. All were spotlessly clean.

The weather was warm and the french doors from the library opened onto a lovely terrace with a table which easily accommodated us all. We also used the beautiful dining room for our formal dinner and could all sit around the kitchen table too.

There were footpaths to Puddletown across fields from the farmhouse and lots of lovely walking country a short car ride away.

To sum up, this house is excellent value if you're not looking for all bedrooms to have en-suites. Our guests were delighted and have asked for the property details....what better recommendation than repeat business? We'll be back!

From the Owner

We inherited this house and realise how lucky we are! In the family since 1862, we did it up in 1990 and have added further improvements as we brought up our daughters here. It's a Grade II listed building, and a specialist stonemason has just finished rebuilding the eight nine-foot high chimneys! These serve the Aga and three wood burners, so with the central heating, it's always warm and cosy. We have invested in pristine white linens and towels, and have a rolling decorating programme to keep the house fresh. The house has a lovely peaceful feel, set apart in rolling countryside, but not isolated.

From the Owner

Steeped in history with many original features, set in its own grounds, this house has a lovely 'feel' - many of our guests have said what a great atmosphere it has, and how comfortable it is, and we get lots of repeat bookings! Very quietly located, off the road, but with 3 cottages not too far away so one does not feel isolated. Long views in all directions, and a footpath from the front gate into the unspoilt Dorset countryside.

  • The house is set in 3-acre grounds, the south-facing back garden is totally secure & private, perfect for sunbathing and outdoor dining on the stone terrace. There is plenty of seating at the shaded outdoor table. There is a large gas BBQ, and our toy chest includes beach gear, croquet and lots of other kit to keep children happy. We also have an adorable, traditional Shepherd's Hut. Fully renovated (if not modernised), it's the perfect den for children, or a quiet spot for adults to read a book, or enjoy a drink before dinner. Our large utility room houses the washing machine, dryer, and a huge butler's sink for washing wellies/small dogs! All bed linen & bath towels (white & fluffy), & bright beach towels are included. We provide fresh bottom sheets for the cot & travel cot. A maid service can be arranged at an extra cost. We can also recommend excellent private caterers. The Dining Room has a large antique table with a neat extension that comfortably seats 14 to dine by the cosy wood burner & surrounding family portraits! Make music in the Sitting Room with piano, recorder, sheet music and a "Premier" Drum Kit on request ! (are you sure?)
