About the Owner

Sarah and John live at Graig Wen with their 2 friendly dogs and feisty cat. We also run the small camp site and bed and breakfast on site so are around if you need us. We left Brighton 8 years ago in a camper van and fell in love with this special part of Snowdonia National Park. Having lived in the city for many years, it's such a privilege to be able to walk through our fields to the Mawddach Estuary or bike along the trail to the shops.

From the Owner

The stunning views of the Snowdonia mountains and the direct access to the beautiful Mawddach Estuary took our breath away when we found Graig Wen. There's 45 acres of wild woods, fields and streams to explore and huge sandy beaches a couple of miles down the road. Being in Snowdonia National Park, the area is unspoilt and still quite a well kept secret. We have felt extremely welcomed by local people and the pace of life is certainly slower here. It's a long way to the nearest hypermarket, but there are excellent independent local shops and nothing beats a visit to the farm gate for eggs, bacon and a look at the latest arrivals in the farm yard.

We are in the Southern part of Snowdonia National Park, surrounded by mountains, woods, waterfalls and close to safe sandy beaches. The Mawddach Trail is a flat 9 mile path and cycle track along the beautiful estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth. The views are spectacular and it is suitable for all abilities (although there is steep access to the path through our fields). Within 5 minutes drive there are family friendly and dog friendly beaches where you can also go horse-riding on the sand. The largest forest in Wales, Coed-y-Brenin, is 15 minutes drive where there are more purpose built bike trails from black routes to family trails. World heritage site Harlech Castle, the famous Italaniate village of Portmertion, the Ffestiniog steam railway and Tallyllyn steam railway are within 40 minutes drive. Cadair Idris mountain range is on our doorstep or you can drive an hour to Mount Snowdon and take a steam train up Wales’s highest mountain. Zipworld Titan - Europe's longest series of zip lines has recently opened at the slate caverns of Blaenau Ffestiniog less than 30 minutes drive from us. Here you'll also find Bounce Below - the extraordinary new giant underground trampoline.

There are RSPB nature reserves close by and two centres where you can view magnificent Ospreys during the spring and early summer.

The historic market town of Dolgellau is 5 miles away where there are interesting shops and excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants. The seaside town of Barmouth is just the other side of the Mawddach Estuary where there are more shops, cafes and places to go crabbing in the harbour!

From the Owner

Graig Wen is a fantastic location for walkers, whether you fancy a stroll along the flat Mawddach Trail, or more strenuous climbs around the hills and mountains. Footpaths lead directly from the site and it's a brilliant place to bring your bike or dog. The views from the site itself are beautiful and there are communal areas for guests to take in the panorama of mountains and estuary. Some of the properties share this view - others overlook woodland across the road. The site is a paradise for bird-spotters and photographers without having to leave the gates. Our adjoining small camp site, as featured in the Cool Camping Guides, offers some great opportunities for family den-building, toasting marshmallows around a camp fire and meeting new friends. Sarah and John, the owners, live on site so are around to help with suggestions for you to get the most of your holiday.
