About the property

Demi-chalets French Alps

The demi-chalets are located in La Norma, a family-friendly resort, on the edge of the Vanoise National Park of the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps. Situated in a forested area with exceptional views across the Maurienne Valley it’s a 10 min walk to the nearest supermarket, shops, bars and restaurants in La Norma and a 10 min drive to major supermarkets, shops restaurants and TGV station in Modane. 5 min walk to a green piste and skiable back to chalets. La Norma has 65km piste and only a 20 min drive to Orelle for the express lift up to Les Trois Vallees at Val Thorens. In the summer there are many forest walks and long distance footpaths crossing the mountains. The demi-chalets each have 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and 1 mezzanine sleeping 6 adults comfortably - no sofa beds or 'clic-clacs' with parking nearby. Best airports are Lyon, Geneva and Turin with other airports at Chambery and Grenoble. TGV trains stop at Modane 5km away. Car hire, though not essential, is recommended.

About Chris Leigh

Semi-retired petroleum geologist in early '60s. Bought demi-chalets (ref FR16444) in 2007 for skiing in the ski resort of La Norma close to the Three Valleys but also for use at other times of the year. Bought 2 apartments in Northern Cyprus (ref CY3623) in 2009.

Chris Leigh purchased this chalet in 2007

Why Chris Leigh chose La Norma

I wanted to buy a reasonably priced ski property. Having searched high and low I bought the demi-chalets off plan having inspected the site in La Norma before building began. I had originally only intended to buy one but ended up buying the first demi chalet that was sold and also the last one, which just happened to be next door!

La Norma has the advantages of a quiet uncrowded resort with short ski lift queues and uncrowded but quite challenging pistes; even the red runs are nearly blacks and one of the blacks is very nasty! However you can also access Les Trois Vallees plus many other small ski resorts nearby.

La Norma is also not over-run with Brits and has many French and Dutch visitors and some semi permanent residents plus weekday commuters to Lyon.

What makes this chalet unique

Skiing, walking and chilling out!

They can also provide baby cots, a laundrette, ski passes in winter and activity passes in summer. I believe a ‘half board pass’ is also available for purchase if required and a handy man (Patrick) is also available for anything that might need fixing. Cleaning at finish of stay can also be provided at a cost of about €60. Outside: Plastic table and chairs are available for outside use on the balconies in both demi-chalets. There is a ski locker at the side of each demi-chalet underneath the balcony but it is also possible to store both skis and bikes relatively safely on the large balcony out of view overnight. Mountain bikes can be hired and an open air swimming pool and tennis courts are available in the summer months.

Nous avons passé une semaine agréable et ensoleillée.

Le chalet tout confort est très bien situé (vue sur les montagnes).

Je recommande cette location pour de futurs clients.

Très bon souvenir

Summer visit!

  • 5 of 5

The chalet is comfortable and attractive...with stunning views of the mountains. We sat out on the balcony most evenings enjoying the evening sunshine. The chalet comfortably sleeps six...and in the summer was lovely and cool downstairs...though the mezzanine, accessed by ladder, was fun for the teenagers. Having two bathrooms was a bonus. The kitchen, whilst more of a kitchenette, had everything needed for us to self cater every evening for three weeks!

La Norma is a great location to enjoy many via ferrata routes and the many sport climbing well as plenty walks. We also enjoyed the nearby high ropes course...far longer and more challenging than an English Go Ape...excellent value ....with two super long zip wires across the gorge. The Fort..all free access ....was interesting. We sampled the many via ferrata routes in and around the fort....great fun going in and out of the gun ports to reach them! The road linking La Norma with the valley was much quicker/shorter than we'd expected. The road through the valley also gave faster access than expected, to a wide range of days out....we could have stayed longer....there's so much to do. Modane, whilst not attractive in any way, is about 10 minutes drive...with access to two excellent supermarkets, both with petrol stations.

This was the first time we had visited the area. The owner is very helpful and easy to contact.....allowing us to make the most of our visit. We were sorry to leave. Thank you.

Summer in the Mountains

  • 5 of 5

Missing the mountains in South Africa I looked for a Mountain escape in Europe, and found myself enjoying the Alps more than I imagined! The chalet was cosy and neat, well stocked and the view stunning. Situated on the edge of La Norma ski resort, away from the hustle and bustle of things, the chalet catches the morning sun out back and evening sun on front verandah - great for sundowners! I was with teenage daughter and 5 yr old son, who both loved the chalet and resort. Everybody employed there was so friendly, I speak hardly any French but it wasn't a problem. We went up the cable cars, walked back down the mountain, mountain biked, swam, zip wired across a canyon, (in nearby accroparc) drove to nearby Val D'Isere, geo cached amongst many other things. Plenty of Summer activities to return and do next time! I highly recommend this chalet and resort for families with children of all ages. Chris, the owner, very helpful and responded via email and text to all my queries, even when we couldn't figure out the DVD machine! Thank you for a most wonderful holiday! My only regret is that my mum, who is nearly 70, wasn't with us - she would have loved it too!

Further Details:

La Norma prides itself as being the ‘cosy resort’ and is very family friendly. It is set in a forested area with plenty of forest walks. The village itself is pedestrianised and has several restaurants and bars plus several small shops and one supermarket. Very French and not overrun Brits!

2 larger supermarkets can be found in Modane 5km away, Casino on the La Norma side of Modane and Les Trois Mousqueteers on the far side plus several restaurants in between. Modane unfortunately is not a pretty town and has always been a frontier/ army town. Other restaurants can be found at Villadron-Bourget a few hundred metres from the bottom of the road up to La Norma where there is a pleasant restaurant called Chez Adrienne and also at Avoriaz in the bottom of the valley.

La Norma has all the advantages of a small ski resort with un-crowded pistes and short lift queues but still has easy access to other small resorts in the Maurienne Valley and to the express lift up to Le Trois Vallees. Access to La Norma from the motorway and main road is short and usually snow free with snow chains rarely needed. Surprisingly skiing at La Norma is more challenging than you might expect with many challenging red runs and 2 nasty black runs.

Much to my surprise La Norma is even nicer in the summer with temperatures in the 20’s plus a refreshing breeze. There are many forest walks and long distance footpaths crossing the mountains including the road on which the demi-chalets are situated, which carries on as a track up the Maurienne Valley for another 30km. Mountain biking, horse riding, white water rafting and canoeing are also available in the summer months. For the more adventurous there is a large ‘zip wire’ park near the Forts of Esseillon, about 2km walk away, including one across the 150m deep gorge plus the ‘via ferrata du diable’ along the cliffs of the gorge.
