2 Demi-chalets with exceptional views in family friendly ski resort of La Norma - 93 Rue Meyer (2 bedrooms + mezzanine sleeping 6)

Updated: 15-Sep-2016
Demi-chalets, La Norma, Savoie, Rhone Alps, France - Beautiful Peaceful Location 5 Min Walk To The Piste With Exceptional Views Over The Maurienne Valley

The demi-chalets are located in La Norma, a family-friendly resort, on the edge of the Vanoise National Park of the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps. Situated in a forested area with exceptional views across the Maurienne Valley it’s a 10 min walk to the nearest supermarket, shops, bars and restaurants in La Norma and a 10 min drive to major supermarkets, shops restaurants and TGV station in Modane. 5 min walk to a green piste and skiable back to chalets. La Norma has 65km piste and only a 20 min drive to Orelle for the express lift up to Les Trois Vallees at Val Thorens. In the summer there are many forest walks and long distance footpaths crossing the mountains. The demi-chalets each have 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and 1 mezzanine sleeping 6 adults comfortably - no sofa beds or 'clic-clacs' with parking nearby. Best airports are Lyon, Geneva and Turin with other airports at Chambery and Grenoble. TGV trains stop at Modane 5km away. Car hire, though not essential, is recommended.

Family Holiday in La Norma

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from another great week in this lovely Chalet situated in the resort of La Norma. The two adjoining chalets offer comfortable and flexible accommodation for up to 6 in each with an interconnecting door allowing the two chalets to be combined for larger groups. Each chalet has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and is fully equipped. The chalets are located in a quiet cul-de-sac in easy walking distance from the village centre and with access to the green run leading to the main lifts. In the village there are a number of shops, restaurants and bars providing a friendly and warm après ski experience.

La Norma has an Alpine village feel and provides good family skiing as well as some more challenging runs for the adventurous. The resort is situated in a ski area with 4 other resorts offering a wide range of skiing that can be accessed using an area lift pass and the huge skiing area of Val Thorens is only a short drive away.

Excellent ski or summer holiday property

  • 5 of 5

The chalet is very comfortable. If you have a large group you may be able to hire the two chalets and join them into one larger chalet.

Excellent resort if you are looking for a holiday away for the crowds. It is very friendly and caters for family groups and Après-ski.

I have been to La Norma and this chalet several times and I plan to go again. Access to lifts and return to the chalet is quite easy. No driving necessary.

There is plenty of variety: With the La Norma ski pass you (optionally) have access to several other valleys. You can also drive (~ 20 minutes) to lift and ski area which has an entrance to Val Thorens in the Three Valleys.

I have no hesitation in recommending this property and this resort.

Small is beautiful!

  • 3 of 5

Having learnt to ski in the big resorts like Tignes, Val d'Isere and

Courchevel, it was a whole new experience to visit La Norma. No lift

queues, delightful little mountain restaurants where they actually

recognise you when you come back a second time and a beautiful village

that has everything you need without the "concrete-jungle" feel of the

well-known centres.

None of this means compromise on the quality of the lifts or variety of

pistes. You have everything from long gentle greens and blues to

challenging blacks - just not so many of them. If there is a downside it

is that, should you want to explore further up the valley, you need a

car or to take the bus as there is no linking lift system. On the other

hand, if you go prepared for this, it all adds to the fun and variety.

One day while having lunch, someone took my skis by mistake. A couple of

quick phone calls by the Bureau de Ski and they located my skis for me.

Would that happen in Meribel or Val Thorens, I wonder?

The chalet is clean, neat and compact. Don't go expecting a 5-star

luxury hotel but for a family or group on a carefully managed budget, it

has everything you need. Larger groups or those wanting double the space

could always rent both halves of the chalet and open up the adjoining

door. It is only a 400 metre walk from the village centre and allows

easy access to shops and restaurants (the single bakery is open early

for delicious croissants and pastries!)

Before going on this trip I had never even heard of La Norma - now, I am

convinced that small is beautiful!

From the Owner

I wanted to buy a reasonably priced ski property. Having searched high and low I bought the demi-chalets off plan having inspected the site in La Norma before building began. I had originally only intended to buy one but ended up buying the first demi chalet that was sold and also the last one, which just happened to be next door! La Norma has the advantages of a quiet uncrowded resort with short ski lift queues and uncrowded but quite challenging pistes; even the red runs are nearly blacks and one of the blacks is very nasty! However you can also access Les Trois Vallees plus many other small ski resorts nearby. La Norma is also not over-run with Brits and has many French and Dutch visitors and some semi permanent residents plus weekday commuters to Lyon.

Also costly ski bus service from Lyon airport to La Norma. Car hire, though not essential, is recommended. Calais 1000km!

Further Details:

La Norma prides itself as being the ‘cosy resort’ and is very family friendly. It is set in a forested area with plenty of forest walks. The village itself is pedestrianised and has several restaurants and bars plus several small shops and one supermarket. Very French and not overrun Brits!

2 larger supermarkets can be found in Modane 5km away, Casino on the La Norma side of Modane and Les Trois Mousqueteers on the far side plus several restaurants in between. Modane unfortunately is not a pretty town and has always been a frontier/ army town. Other restaurants can be found at Villadron-Bourget a few hundred metres from the bottom of the road up to La Norma where there is a pleasant restaurant called Chez Adrienne and also at Avoriaz in the bottom of the valley.

La Norma has all the advantages of a small ski resort with un-crowded pistes and short lift queues but still has easy access to other small resorts in the Maurienne Valley and to the express lift up to Le Trois Vallees. Access to La Norma from the motorway and main road is short and usually snow free with snow chains rarely needed. Surprisingly skiing at La Norma is more challenging than you might expect with many challenging red runs and 2 nasty black runs.

Much to my surprise La Norma is even nicer in the summer with temperatures in the 20’s plus a refreshing breeze. There are many forest walks and long distance footpaths crossing the mountains including the road on which the demi-chalets are situated, which carries on as a track up the Maurienne Valley for another 30km. Mountain biking, horse riding, white water rafting and canoeing are also available in the summer months. For the more adventurous there is a large ‘zip wire’ park near the Forts of Esseillon, about 2km walk away, including one across the 150m deep gorge plus the ‘via ferrata du diable’ along the cliffs of the gorge.

  • Notes on accommodation: Keys, bed linen and towels cab be picked up from Sogenor, the resort manager and rentals agency, which is located above and to one side of the main underground car park in the centre of La Norma. They can also provide baby cots, a laundrette, ski passes in winter and activity passes in summer. I believe a ‘half board pass’ is also available for purchase if required and a handy man (Patrick) is also available for anything that might need fixing. Cleaning at finish of stay can also be provided at a cost of about €60. Outside: Plastic table and chairs are available for outside use on the balconies in both demi-chalets. There is a ski locker at the side of each demi-chalet underneath the balcony but it is also possible to store both skis and bikes relatively safely on the large balcony out of view overnight. Mountain bikes can be hired and an open air swimming pool and tennis courts are available in the summer months.
