Recently Built Hillside House On The Edge Of A Small Town In South Vendee

Overview

Property

Updated: 11-Nov-2016
House in Mareuil sur Lay, Near Lucon, Vendee, Pays de la Loire, France - Three Bedroom House Overlooking The Town With Large South Facing Private Terrace

From the outside the house looks like a typical Vendeen home, but walk through the front door and you're in a completely different world. The high curved wooden ceiling of the huge 11 x 5 metre living/kitchen/dining area is stunning. This room has double doors out on to the large south facing terrace with lovely views over the town of Mareuil and its famous medieval church. Oak floors and doors emphasise the wooden theme inside the house; the twin bedroom has a lovely oak staircase up to the mezzanine area (very low ceiling so only suitable for children or small people!). The master bedroom also overlooks the terrace, and bedroom 3, another double, looks to the front. The bathroom has washbasin, loo and corner bath, and the wet room has open shower, washbasin and loo.

About the Owner

We bought our former watermill in 1988 and now split our time 50/50 between London and the Vendee.

We like the area so much that a couple of years ago we bought a piece of land on the hill overlooking the nearby town, and have built a new home, to our exacting specifications, to use in the winter months and in our eventual old age!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We enjoyed a lovely stay in this villa. It is spacious, well equiped, and even better than the photos. We loved the terrace, and were able to eat, and bbq outside most evenings, enjoying the stunning views."

"This house is like the Tardis - small and beautifully formed on the outside and wow! ENORMOUS when you walk inside. It was excellent and very well appointed. Comfortable and clean throughout. Two bathrooms so no queueing."

Beautiful holiday home

  • 5 of 5

The house received "two thumbs up" as soon as we opened the door. The immediate impression was one of a clean, modern and very comfortable property. The living area and bedrooms are all very spacious and the patio garden is a great place to unwind. Everything we could have expected was provided and the owners gave a warm and friendly welcome.

The village of Mareuil-sur-Lay is a short walk away for local facilities (including a good bakery/patisserie and medium-sized supermarket), and some larger towns are easily reached by car. We particularly enjoyed visiting La Tranche-sur-Mer, which is a lively seaside town with great beaches and big choice of restaurants, about 30 mins drive away.

We would not hesitate to recommend the property to others and will very possibly visit again in the future.

Bright, modern, clean - great view!

  • 5 of 5

This is a really great holiday house - plenty of space inside, and the terrace with its lovely view of the church was so charming that even our 3 young children were captivated! The living space and bedrooms are really airy and bright and everywhere was spotless - Ian and Kate have done a wonderful job with this place and were extremely kind and welcoming "hosts". We made good use of the open air pool in the town, and also had regular trips to the beach, especially Les Conches, easily within reach by car. The cafe/restaurant by the river at the "Pont Eiffel" was considered a great find by the whole family. Thanks for a fantastic holiday.

Wonderfully relaxing family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Three generations, eight of us in all, enjoyed this surprisingly spacious and well-equipped home in a quiet location just a short walk out of town. The house comfortably accommodated two couples, two small children (in the single beds) and two grown-up singleton lads (in the double beds on the mezzanine). We had a very enjoyable two weeks exploring the beaches and other attractions by day and BBQ-ing by night on the terrace at the house. The terrace had beautiful views over Mareuil towards the church and chateau. We all loved our stay here and hope to be back next year!

Location

From the Owner

Having owned a country property near Mareuil for over 20 years, we jumped at the opportunity to buy a piece of land overlooking the town. There we have created our ideal "town house" - timber framed, highly insulated, everything to our specification, using the experience of 30 years' property developing in the UK. For us, it's a manageable and economical alternative to our big, draughty country house when we pop over for a week or two during the winter months. For summer guests it's a fantastic and really comfortable base from which to explore the Vendee and less than a half hour drive to the glorious Atlantic beaches.

Coast/Beach:

Lovely sandy Atlantic beaches at La Tranche sur Mer are 30 minutes drive, Les Sables d'Olonne or La Rochelle, a bit further.

Travel:

If travelling by car from the UK, the Western Channel ports of St Malo, Caen or Cherbourg are the most convenient, within a 3 or 4 hour drive. The Channel Tunnel is an easy but long drive, being motorway all the way but taking 6 hours from Calais.

Fly/Drive to La Rochelle or Nantes is a very competitive alternative, with Easyjet flying from Gatwick and Bristol, Ryanair from Stansted, FlyBe from Southampton and Jet2 from Leeds and Edinburgh. Both airports are less than an hour's drive.

Distances:

The house is a five minute walk from the centre of Mareuil sur Lay for bakers, patisserie, bars and a couple of nice restaurants, as well as lovely riverside walks, wine tasting, fishing and canoeing on the river.

Further Details:

Lucon, 5 miles south, has a wider range of shops, hypermarkets and restaurants, and La Roche sur Yon, 15 miles north, is the Departmental capital with many more shops and activities.

The beautiful old port of La Rochelle, 50 minutes south, is always worth a visit, the amazing theme park of the Puy du Fou is 45 minutes east, and the Marais Poitevin, or Green Venice, is less than an hour away.

Facilities

From the Owner

The Vendee is just far enough south to guarantee (almost!) lovely summer weather, and yet is less than a day's drive from London (and now we have the benefit of low cost airlines flying in to La Rochelle, less than an hour away). Being just on the edge of town, it's an easy stroll down to shops, banks, bars, the river and heated municipal pool.
