Delightful Cottage on Shaldon Green, Nautical Decor, Close to Beach | Sleeps 4-6

Updated: 12-Sep-2016
Luxury Cottage in Shaldon - On The Green, Views Of The Sea, Two Minutes Walk From The Beach And Restaurants

*A Devonshire cream tea is provided for you to enjoy on your arrival*

Oyster Cottage is a gorgeous 19th Century cottage recently renovated and newly furnished in a contemporary nautical style. Lovingly fitted to a high specification with: Wi-Fi, flat screen TV and DVD, waste disposal, electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge with freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, combi-boiler for constant hot water and gas central heating.

The cottage is reverse level with an open plan lounge, dining area and kitchen on the first floor which allows wonderful views of the sea, estuary and village green. There are UPVC double glazed windows throughout and sliding doors with a juliette balcony off the dining area.

The double room has a comfy double bed with a kingsize duvet and top quality bedding. There is a very roomy fitted wardrobe, venetian blinds, a black out blind and coordinating bedside tables with matching lamps. In the second bedroom there are adult sized bunk beds and a walk in wardrobe. Another kingsize duvet is available for the sofa bed in the living room.

Central village location overlooking the popular Bowling Club Green and less than 100 metres from Shaldon’s popular safe, sandy beach with a passenger ferry to Teignmouth. Easy pull up outside to unload and free parking around the green.

The village has excellent restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops all within easy walking distance. The wonderful London Inn is just across the green. There is fishing, sailing, a zoo, approach golf, the coastal footpath and a children's play park are all close by.

Two miles away is the excellent Teignmouth Golf Course designed by the Augusta National architect.

Shaldon’s elegant Georgian architecture, fisherman’s cottages and narrow streets exude charm. Throughout the year there are activities, festivals and the very popular Regatta in August.

About the Owner

We both grew up locally and after a spell living in West Sussex we returned to Devon. Gary is a health care director and Carole a teacher. We love the coast and enjoy walking, cycling, skiing and eating out! We had a motor boat and spent many happy hours pottering about on the river. Our two children grew up playing on the beach at Shaldon and went to the village primary school. We are currently on secondment to the USA and so value our wonderful cottage even more on our regular visits home. We are fortunate to have a wonderful local couple managing the cottage and maintaining it to the high standards that we started with.

A very nicely finished cottage in a prime location

  • 4 of 5

A cosy cottage within easy reach of all amenities. We were met on arrival and 'shown the ropes' which was helpful after a long journey. Oyster cottage has been nicely renovated and is right on the green in Shaldon, so is well situated for the excellent London Inn and the Clipper Cafe.

It was our first visit to Shaldon and we found it quite charming ( and being at the end of the holiday season, pleasantly quiet).

We would strongly recommend buying a weekly parking ticket, around £20 and leaving the car in the town car park, which is about a 10 minute walk, along the front from the cottage. This avoids any early rising to beat the parking restrictions, which ( in season) kick in at 8.00am.

All in all a lovely week, with the benefit of some lovely, late season sunshine. We very much hope to return. Paul.

Owner's Response: Lovely, thoughtful and interesting comments, thank you. Shaldon really is a charming seaside village with the added benefits of having great pubs and cafes which serve great food. It is also right on the coastal footpath and has a fun 18 hole, par 3 golf course so there is lots to do all year round.

We loved our stay in Oyster cottage and Shaldon.

The cottage is in excellent condition, well furnished and in a brilliant location.

We would definitely recommend the cottage in particular and Shaldon in general.

Owner's Response: Fantastic comments and a recommendation! What more can I ask. Shaldon is a great place to visit at any time of the year I love to walk on the beach on blustery Autumn and Winter days then relax with a drink in The Clipper or the cottage while gazing out the window.

Beautiful cottage, amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages in Shaldon over the years and this is by far the best. The cottage has been refurbished to a very high level and is very light and airy. The location is absolutely superb - right on the green and a minute from the beach. Morning coffee and glass of wine in the evening sat at the dining table with the French doors to the Juliette balcony open watching the world go by on the green - so relaxing! We were a group of 2 adults and 2 children aged 10 and 7. Although the cottage is compact, we didn't feel crammed in. The lack of a garden didn't matter when you have the green and beach on your door step. The on-street parking is easy or use the main public car park - only c£20 for the week.

Wish we could be back in Shaldon now and staying in Oyster Cottage - the most perfect seaside village I know and the most perfect holiday cottage.

Owner's Response: "The perfect seaside village and the most perfect holiday cottage." A description of both Shaldon and Oyster Cottage which I wholeheartedly agree with! It is such a great place to unwind and relax. When we found the cottage on the green, beautifully renovated, within short walking distance of the beach, the pub and amazing cafés and restaurants we loved it from the start. We added some nautical décor, but it is hard to compete with the wonderful views. Whether popping out or staying in Oyster Cottage perfect.

First class

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is beautifully situated overlooking the village green. It is very well equipped and our initial concerns that it might be on the snug side were immediately displaced on arrival. It has been very thoughtfully converted and had a lovely light and airy feel and our family of 2 adults, a 9 year old and a 6 week old baby never felt on top of one another. The service from both the owner and manager were excellent and the cream tea waiting on our arrival was very welcome. I cannot recommend Oyster Cottage and Shaldon highly enough.

Owner's Response: What lovely comments! We were amazed when we first walked into the cottage too. It is so much larger and more light and airy inside than it looks on the outside. I love the "wow" effect when you walk up the stairs. The conversion and renovation carried out by a lovely local couple just before we bought it was very well done. We loved the cottage when we first saw it and it is wonderful when our guests love it to!

The property was in an excellent location: well presented; bright and airy.

The cottage met our expectations from the description provided. It was very clean and well maintained and the welcome cream tea was appreciated. Well positioned within easy access of all local attractions and amenities and an excellent view of the Teignmouth fireworks in carnival week. I would recommend unreservedly to friends and family.

Owner's Response: The location of Oyster Cottage is one of the main reasons we bought it. It is wonderful to be right at the heart of the village and close to the great beaches, cafes and restaurants so you can leave the car behind. We all work hard to maintain the cottage to a very high standard and cleanliness is of the utmost importance to us. We want our guests to truly relax and enjoy their stay and it seems from the wonderful reviews we receive they do. The cream tea on arrival is a little extra treat. The scones are hand made and the jam and cream are locally sourced. When in Devon ......!

Gorgeous cottage on the egde of the village green

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It is "upside down" with the bathroom and bedrooms on the ground floor and the lounge and kitchen upstairs. This works really well. When you are having your breakfast or dinner you can look out over the bowling green or along the road next to the river front. Being upstairs gives a great view. The kitchen is very well equipped, although we didn't use very much of it as we ate out most meals! The cottage is very clean and decoration is new and is in very good condition.

It is only a short walk to the ferry to cross the river which then takes you over to Teignmouth if you want to do some shopping. If you fancy a bit more of a walk then its not too far to walk over the bridge into town.

This cottage is highly recommended!

Owner's Response: A really enjoyable, relaxing stay is what I hope for all the guests staying at Oyster Cottage. I love to sit upstairs and watch the comings and goings on the green or river to. The location on the green and the fact that greats pubs, restaurants, cafes and little shops are all within walking distance makes Oyster Cottage the perfect place to stay (although I may be a little biased!!) We have listened to our guests and hopefully equipped the cottage with everything they need and both us as owners and James and Karen, the wonderful local couple who take care of the cottage, work hard to keep the place immaculate.

From the Owner

We have always loved Shaldon and were delighted when this cottage on the Green came up for sale as this has always been our favourite location in the village. The cottage has been totally renovated very innovatively and tastefully, by two local people. Oyster Cottage is perfectly situated and due to the thoughtful reverse level design you can enjoy wonderful views of the green, the village, the sea and river, whilst relaxing with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. There are plenty of wonderful places to eat and drink in Shaldon, including the Clipper which is open all day and is right on the beach, the award winning Coffee Rush which serves Riverford Farm products. Or for a real treat Ode Restaurant in Fore Street or Ode Cafe at the Ness. The London Inn was completely renovated in 2013 and serves amazing food too. We have spent many enjoyable evenings with friends there while staying at the cottage ourselves. Shaldon is a quaint seaside village with so much to offer.

From the Owner

There are many wonderful things about staying at Oyster Cottage. The village green location is ideal as you are within walking distance of the local facilities, shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and the beach. You can easily pull up outside to load and unload. It is a very bright and airy property and because of it's position the dual aspect views are fantastic. We have furnished it in a nautical style in keeping with the village ethos. We take great pride in maintaining the decor and furnishings so that it keeps it's "newly decorated" feel. It is a quirky mixture of old and modern and includes everything from WiFi to waste disposal to make staying there as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. After four successful years with lots of wonderful comments and reviews from our guests, the cottage is spring cleaned and we are looking forward to welcoming more people this year. We have added even more refinements for 2016.
