Oyster Cottage is a gorgeous 19th Century cottage recently renovated and newly furnished in a contemporary nautical style. Lovingly fitted to a high specification with: Wi-Fi, flat screen TV and DVD, waste disposal, electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge with freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, combi-boiler for constant hot water and gas central heating.

The cottage is reverse level with an open plan lounge, dining area and kitchen on the first floor which allows wonderful views of the sea, estuary and village green. There are UPVC double glazed windows throughout and sliding doors with a juliette balcony off the dining area.

The double room has a comfy double bed with a kingsize duvet and top quality bedding. There is a very roomy fitted wardrobe, venetian blinds, a black out blind and coordinating bedside tables with matching lamps. In the second bedroom there are adult sized bunk beds and a walk in wardrobe. Another kingsize duvet is available for the sofa bed in the living room.

Central village location overlooking the popular Bowling Club Green and less than 100 metres from Shaldon’s popular safe, sandy beach with a passenger ferry to Teignmouth. Easy pull up outside to unload, free parking around the green. Also many "local' parking places nearby and two large car parks. Leave the car behind for the duration of your stay, everywhere is walkable!

The village has excellent restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops all within easy walking distance. The wonderful London Inn is just across the green. There is fishing, sailing, a zoo, approach golf, the coastal footpath and a children's play park are all close by.

Two miles away is the excellent Teignmouth Golf Course designed by the Augusta National architect.

Shaldon’s elegant Georgian architecture, fisherman’s cottages and narrow streets exude charm. Throughout the year there are activities, festivals and the very popular Regatta in August.

About Carole Slack

We both grew up locally and after a spell living in West Sussex we returned to Devon. Gary is a health care director and Carole a teacher. We love the coast and enjoy walking, cycling, skiing and eating out! We had a motor boat and spent many happy hours pottering about on the river. Our two children grew up playing on the beach at Shaldon and went to the village primary school.We are currently on secondment to the USA and so value our wonderful cottage even more on our regular visits home. We are fortunate to have a wonderful local couple managing the cottage and maintaining it to the high standards that we started with.

Why Carole Slack chose Shaldon

We have always loved Shaldon and were delighted when this cottage on the Green came up for sale as this has always been our favourite location in the village. The cottage has been totally renovated very innovatively and tastefully, by two local people. Oyster Cottage is perfectly situated and due to the thoughtful reverse level design you can enjoy wonderful views of the green, the village, the sea and river, whilst relaxing with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. There are plenty of wonderful places to eat and drink in Shaldon, including the Clipper which is open all day and is right on the beach, the award winning Coffee Rush which serves Riverford Farm products. Or for a real treat Ode Restaurant in Fore Street or Ode Cafe at the Ness. The London Inn was completely renovated in 2013 and serves amazing food too. We have spent many enjoyable evenings with friends there while staying at the cottage ourselves. Shaldon is a quaint seaside village with so much to offer.

What makes this cottage unique

There are many wonderful things about staying at Oyster Cottage. The village green location is perfect as you are within walking distance of all the local facilities, shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and just 50 metres to the beach and ferry to Teignmouth. You can easily pull up outside to load and unload. Plenty of parking located nearby. No need to use the car for the duration of your stay, unless you want to go further afield.

It is a very bright and airy property and because of it's position the dual aspect views are fantastic. We have furnished it in a nautical style in keeping with the village ethos. We take great pride in maintaining the decor and furnishings so that it keeps it's "newly decorated" feel.

It is a quirky mixture of old and modern and includes everything from WiFi to waste disposal to make staying there as enjoyable and relaxing as possible.

After five successful years with lots of wonderful comments and reviews from our happy guests, the cottage has been spring cleaned and we are ready to welcome guests old and new to Oyster Cottage on The Green. We have added even more refinements for 2018, including some decor items, but most exciting is the bathroom remodel. We now have a wonderfully spacious walk in shower, tastefully designed and decorated to fit in with the nautical and seaside theme throughout the cottage.

Notes on accommodation: Non-smoking. Cream tea welcome basket on arrival: scones, jam, cream, milk and teabags. Good mobile signal and free Wifi. Kingsize duvets on double bed and sofa bed. Children welcome - a highchair and stairgate is available free of charge if required. No pets. Parking: There is unlimited free parking all year round outside the property around the green. There is also limited and unlimited free parking elsewhere in the village close by (more unlimited free parking available October to April). There are two car parks within 5/15 minutes walk. These are free from 6pm to 8am. You can also purchase a weekly parking ticket usable in any Teignbridge carpark for £20 (contact 01626 215859 or Outside: The cottage is situated on the village green where there is seating, or you can lay out a picnic rug. You can relax there and watch the world go by, let your children play or enjoy a picnic. Alternatively you could always have fish and chips or a barbecue on the beach! The choice is yours! Utility Room: A washing machine is located in a cupboard in the bathroom. An airer, iron and ironing board and vacuum cleaner are also provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed Linen included-duvets, sheets, 2 pillows per person. Tea towel provided. Towels can be hired. Cleaning: The owners ensure the property is clean and tidy on arrival it must be left in the same clean and tidy condition to avoid additional charges. Other: Dining area - round table seats 6. Window views over village and bowling green. Stair gate available if required.

Perfect seaside getaway

Great accommodation which is spacious, bright and so well located for all the village amenities.

Perfect for the kids and the grown ups.

Seaviews from upstairs are an extra treat and also onto the bowling green.

The big windows allow for an amazing quality of light.

We had a lovely few days and hope to return !

Owner's Response: The reverse level layout of the cottage does allow for amazing views of the estuary, the bowling green and the green fields beyond. The large windows and Juliet balconies make the cottage bright and airy so that it is a pleasure to be there whatever the weather! You feel part of the village even when you are indoors.

Lovely cottage perfect position

Great cottage perfect position on the green. The bakery . Butchers and village store close by. Good food at London inn short ferry ride to crab shack excellent sea food . Great place for a holiday all year around.

Great location in lovely village

Superb stay in Shaldon. Oyster cottage is as good as the photos suggest. Very comfortable, homely, spotless and very well kitted out. We received a great welcome from James who supplied lots of useful information as well as kindly supplying towels that we had forgotten, causing him a few round trip miles.

The location is great and you could quite easily park your car and forget about getting anywhere else as 3 friendly pubs and restaurants are on your doorstep and the coziness of Oyster cottage allows you to just relax.

Owner's Response: We work hard to keep the cottage spotless and well maintained so guests can have a really relaxing and comfortable stay. It is so nice to park up and forget about the car for a while. It s a real treat to be able to stroll to great pubs, restaurants and cafes. If you want to eat in there is a superb butchers, wonderful bakery (great pasties!) and the village store for groceries or fish and chips just around the corner the choice is yours. Also just a couple of minutes away is the beach and the ferry to Teignmouth.

great location with lots to do locally

Lovely cottage were you can park up and never have to drive again if you want too. 3 pubs within walking distance but do book in advance as they get busy. Take the ferry to Teignmouth then the train to Paignton and on to Dartmouth on a wonderful steam train all without getting in the car.

The beach, golf, shops, pubs cafes and restaurants are all on hand as is the Coastal Footpath if you want a great walk with fantastic views!

The cottage is 18 miles (35 minutes) from the end of the M5 at Exeter. Then the A380 dual carriage way comes to within 4 miles (9 minutes) of Shaldon. From Bristol - Approx 1 hours 40 minutes. There is a train station at Teignmouth (3 miles) and Newton Abbot (7 miles).


Teignmouth 2 miles-beaches, pier, fishing harbour, watersports. Torbay 6 miles- beaches, marina, Living Coasts, Paignton Zoo, Greenway, Torre Abbey, Gardens. Newton Abbot 5 miles- market town, cinema,racecourse.

Exeter 15 miles- Racecourse, cathedral, Roman underground passages, museum. Dartmouth 18 miles (via ferry)- sailing, Royal Naval Academy, marinas, historic harbourside. Dartmoor 14 miles- horse riding, walking, moorland villages, pubs, fly fishing. Paignton 10 miles- Apollo cinema.

The cottage is ideal for all weathers and seasons. It is close to the beaches, on the green and all facilities. Perfect for fishing and crabbing. The cottage is very light and airy and has wonderful views over the river and countryside from large picture windows, which can be appreciated at any time of day. Village shops include; award winning butchers, excellent bakery, pharmacy, Post Office, supermarket, hairdressers, barber, gift and craft shops and Tom Thumb boutique. Takeaways; Fish and Chips. Cafes; Coffee Rush at the Clifford, Lolliebean for coffee, cakes and ice cream. Restaurants; award winning ODE, Ode Cafe with its own micro brewery, one of the UK's most charming seaside cafes (see Telegraph article: ), Ness House Hotel and Pub (Hall&Woodhouse), Clipper Cafe (opened May 2012, beachside), No 1 The Strand (tapas and specialities), Clifford Arms (excellent pub food), The Ferry Boat Inn (beach side BBQ, live music). Changeover Day:
The changeover day is usually Saturday for weekly bookings however there is flexibility out of season. Please contact owner for short breaks.
Arrival from 3pm to 7pm. Later arrivals may incur a charge.
Departure 10am
Towels can be hired at £6 per person for a hand and bath towel.

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
