Farmhouse in Brecey, Nr. Avranches, Manche, Normandy, France - Peaceful Rural Location

La Sagerie is a beautifully renovated farmhouse set in over an acre of orchard and garden in a peaceful rural location. There are fine views over the surrounding countryside. The house is centrally heated and has a wood-burning stove to make it warm and cosy in the colder months. It is just over a mile from the centre of Brécey town, with its shops, bars, restaurants and a thriving Friday market. The Information Pack for visitors gives details of some excellent restaurants. English tv, cd and dvd players and iPod dock enable your enjoyment of your favourite entertainment. WiFi is provided free. The caretakers are English.

There are 3 double rooms [one with a king-sized bed] and a bunk room with en-suite shower on the first floor. There is a separate shower room on the first floor and a wc on the ground floor. 2 twin rooms [one with en-suite bathroom/wc and one with en-suite shower and wc] are on the second floor.

The spacious ground floor accommodtion consists of a large sitting room (with television) and this communicates with the kitchen/dining area. Although the sitting and dining areas have plenty of seating for 12, we are frequently visited by small parties of two, who like the openness and peace of this rural property.

There is a washroom on the ground floor and a washing line in the garden.

Outside there is a patio with dining table and barbecue, while children love to picnic on the extensive grass areas and to play hide-and-seek in the grounds. A goal is provided so that the kids can practice their football.

Why Mike and Jill Stammers chose Avranches area

We spent a lot of time searching for this property. We wanted a peaceful rural setting, while we needed ready access to the services available in town. We are keen on bird watching and wanted somewhere in which there was a large variety of birds. We are very interested in the history of the Second World War and to find that this house was probably a German command post helped us to make our decision: certainly we have found military artifacts from the War in the garden. And we like the historic sights that are easily reached from here.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The extensive views from La Sagerie and its setting made this house the one for us. The easy access to so many sites of historic importance - and to special places for children - sealed the deal.

husbands surprise 50th

Fantastic house, fantastic area with lots of wildlife around. A really well equipped house that accommodated 9 people. Mike and Jill were a great help in ensuring my husbands 50 th went smoothly, caretakers were really helpful. All attractions are within easy reach and fabulous beaches

A peaceful holiday in rural Normandy

La Sagerie was the base for our seventh annual weekly cycling holiday; 3 times in France, 4 times in the UK. When selecting accommodation we look for sufficient bedrooms and bathrooms, and La Sagerie more than matched our requirement with 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. It has a very well equipped kitchen/dinner, spacious lounge, and the English TV was a bonus for those wanting to watch the European Football Championship.

The six chaps of a certain age (mid 60’s) enjoyed cycling the peaceful rural lanes, and with careful planning selected the less hilly routes. The sheltered lean-to on the side of the building was very handy for storing our bikes undercover.

La Sagerie turned out to be a fine base, quiet but within easy striking distance of Brecey for our baguettes, croissants, and supermarket runs. We regrettably have to give the L’as Gourmand in Brecey the award for the worst the menu de midi we have ever had in France.

We can recommend visiting Villedieu-les-Poeles for its Tuesday market, with its cafes, bell foundry, and a fine menu de midi in Hotel Saint-Pierre. Other recommendations include Avranches, Granville, and of course Le Mont Saint-Michel.

Our contact with the owners, Mike and Jill, before and after the holiday was friendly, prompt and very helpful. The local caretakers, Neil and Joan, could not have been more friendly and helpful. We can thoroughly recommend La Sagerie for a peaceful holiday in beautiful rural Normandy.

Peaceful and very comfortable

La Sagerie is all it says in Owners Direct. We had a fabulous time with our family celebrating our Golden Wedding. Ages ranged from 72 down to 4 years and it suited all. I would recommend this property to anyone wanting to explore the Normandy region, as you are not to far from the historical points but far enough for the peace and tranquillity that most people seek on their holidays.

Rural tranquility

La Sagerie is a rural treat, peaceful, lots of trees, little man-made noise, no city bustle.

The house itself is comfortable and spacious - exactly what it says on the tin!

The garden is spacious, with fruit trees, moles digging their earthworks, bird song, red squirrels (yes really but you'll have to be quiet and very patient) humming bird hawk moths, jays, buzzards, pigeons and a whole lot of other things.

Our small dog is enthralled with the place, he's a seasoned traveller now, and he's registered with the vet in Brecey. He likes moles, loves wandering in the garden, does't know what to make of cows at the end of the road, or sheep in the next door farm, or goats.

The village - Brecey - is lovely, with a good supermarket, great bakers/pattissiers, and a couple of restaurants. L'As Gourmand is great fun and good value, le P'tit Nicolas is Italian with no chance of going away hungry. Le Moulin de Jean is a few Km away and it is spectacular in quality, presentation and service, all reasonably priced. we're going back to La Sager next year (fourth visit) and I shall go back to that restaurant hoping that they still serve the pig's trotter stuffed with black pudding. Others have written about the Fruitiers in Villedieu, there's Le Poussoir, too.

Villedieu - les Poeles is worth visiting, so also St Hilaire - du - Haricot, especially on market day.

Fougeres is a modern town within striking distance, with good shops.

All in all La Sager is a truly great place, plenty of accommodation, superb location, very secluded, yet within striking distance of the Brittany and Normandy coasts with all they have to offer.

I can't wait for next June

A Gem of a Holiday Home

La Sagerie is a gem of a holiday home in Normandy.

It is close to the small town of Brecey, which is ideal for stocking up on food at the supermarket , but far enough away to make you feel like you are in the heart of the French countryside.

The property is one of the best appointed that we have stayed in. On arrival we've found it very clean and well maintained.

The living area is spacious throughout, with a well equipped kitchen. There are plenty of bedrooms that cater for families of all types.

The property is set in its own grounds that are perfect for children or pets to enjoy and the front of the property catches the sun all day. There are facilities for barbecuing.

Not too far away is the town on Villedieu-les-Poêles that has a variety of shops and restaurants most notably Le Fruitier and the fabulous Ferme de Malte. If you like pizza then Pizza St Hubert is a must.

Further afield across into Brittany there is Mont St Michel and the beautiful coastal town of Cancale with a number of great restaurants especially Chez Victor, well worth a try.

But most of all there is nothing more enjoyable than relaxing at La Sagerie with a book and a glass of wine enjoying the tranquility.

As for customer service, this is second to none. From the initial contact to finalising the booking. All information is clear including directions to the property and contact information for the caretaker, who is also very helpful.

I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing family break

Exactly as described

Lovely house, accommodation perfect for our family of 9 adults plus dog. We felt that Living/dining area may be cramped with more people. Big garden, adequate parking for our 4 cars, large charcoal barbecue, well equipped kitchen. Very quiet, rural area, car essential as no shop/bar/restaurant within walking distance. Electricity Not included in rental fee and is therefore extra cost (oven and heating are electric). Communication with owner easy and efficient.

Le Havre Ferry Port is 150 miles away.

The journey from Dieppe takes about about 4 hours and Calais about 4 1/2 hours.

A method of transport (car/motorcycle/bicycle) is essential.

The local towns:

Brécey is just over a mile from the house. There is a large Supermarket, together with bakers, butchers, bars, etc. Market day is Friday.

Villedieu-les-Poeles is about 7 miles from La Sagerie. This is a lovely town, with all that you would expect: Supermarkets, restaurants, attractive buildings. The market on Tuesday is well worth a visit.

Avranches is about 15 miles from La Sagerie. This is the major town of the area. Market day is Saturday.

Our farmhouse is ideally placed for most of the activities you will need on your holiday and there is something for everybody -

For sightseeing: Mediaeval history [William the Conqueror was born at Falaise; Henry II did penance at Avranches Cathedral for his treatment of Thomas a Becket], Modern history [Pegasus Bridge and the Normandy landing beaches; there is also the 'Musée Aout 1944' in Falaise], Enigmatic buildings [Pirou fortified manor house; Hambye Abbey] and World Heritage Sites [the Bayeux Tapestry; le Mont St. Michel] are all about half an hour's drive away. The limekilns at Regneville are very interesting - you need a fine day, though, as it is mostly outside, but it offers a fascinating insight into this important Victorian industry.

For the Coast and Beaches: The beautiful sandy beaches at Carolles, Joulouville and around the Bay of le Mont Saint Michel are all about a half hour's drive away. Granville and St. Malo are bustling ports and you can get a ferry to the Channel Islands for an interesting and different day out.

Children's activities: the Ange Michel [near Avranches], Aligator Bay [near le Mont St. Michel], the zoo at Champrépus [near Villedieu], le Roc des Harmonies animal park [near Ganville] and the Model Railway at Clécy are all within about half an hour and the children (and their adults) will love them.

Further Details:

Brécey has an outdoor swimming pool, while Villedieu and Avranches have indoor pools.

This area is crossed by several 'randonée' footpaths, making it great for walking.

The River See, which runs through Brécey, is one of the foremost trout rivers in France and coarse fishing is also available. The fishing lakes at the Etangs du Val de See, where you can hire all the equipment that you need, has a shop for smoked trout and a restaurant serving local food.

Horse riding is available in the next village of St. Martin.

This is good cycling country, with cycles available for hire in Brécey.

Tennis courts, Boules and pedalos are also available in Brécey.

The zoo at Chemprepus is well recommended.

The old town of Villedieu has a wealth of museums and galleries, as well as the famous bell foundry.

Saint Sever forest (20 minutes) is fascinating walking country with its castle, lakes and arboretum. It has hides for bird watching.

Granville (1/2 hour) has the museum and gardens of Christian Dior, as well as part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall.

St. Lo (1/2 hour) houses the National Stud and frequently has horse shows.

Paris is just over 2 1/2 hours from Villedieu by train, maiking it an easy day trip.

Ferries go from Granville to the Isles of Chausey (about half an hour) and to Jersey (70 mins.) making a great day out.

Cancale (near St. Malo) is famous for its oysters and seefood, while Blainville-su-mer houses oyster beds and is equally renowned.

St. Malo has an aquarium.

This is Calvados country and you can taste Calvados, Cidre and the local Pommeau in many distilleries nearby. There is an old Cider Press attached to La Sagerie, but this has not been used for several years.

Changeover Day:
Changeover Day is Saturday.

The property is normally available from 4 pm. and is due to be vacated at 10 am.

Notes on prices:
The price for 2017 includes electricit, gas and water.
WiFi is free, but can be intermittent.

The prices are for the whole house, irrespective of the number of people in your party, making it ideal for families and friends to gather together.

The local authority charges a Tourist Tax of €0.22 per night for each tourist over the age of13.

A non-refundable deposit of £150.00 is payable on booking. The balance is payable one month before the start of your holiday. Payment by bank transfer is preferred and can be in either Sterling or Euros. The Euro rate, if required, will be on the booking form..
