About the property

Farmhouse close to Surgeres, Charente Maritime, France

La Maison is a luxury 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom single storey farmhouse situated on the home farm which historically supplied produce to the château. During the renovation our aim was to retain the period charm of a french farmhouse, whilst adding stylish touches including a cast iron roll top bath, a solid Indian Rosewood kitchen with natural stone worktops, Leisure range cooker and plenty of period furniture. The front of the house comprises 2 bedrooms and a family bathroom. The first bedroom has a king size bed, large wardrobe and semainier, the second has two single four poster iron beds and chest of drawers. The bathroom comprises a sink, walk in shower with stone tiles, a toilet and of course the roll top. All rooms along the front of the building have a view out onto our very pretty hedge of roses. The rear of the property comprises of the third bedroom, also a with king size bed and large wardrobe, a second separate toilet and a shower room.

La Maison also benefits from its own private swimming pool (10m x 5m x 1.4m) with decked terrace and loungers, set in a sheltered yet sunny walled garden. As well as the terrace, there are a number of seating areas to choose from whether your mood is for sun or shade. These include a pretty gravelled courtyard with table and chairs and views of the beautiful gatehouse, a covered stone 'abri' overlooking the pool with chic outdoor lounge furniture and a large open sided barn providing plenty of shade.

About Seb or Lucy Hepplewhite

La Prise has been in our family for almost 12 years now, prior to our arrival it served as a holiday home and we spent many months here gradually restoring the house and its grounds to their former glory. In 2009, Lucy and I finally decided to take the plunge and quit our jobs in finance in the UK to move to La Prise permanently, allowing us to set up our own business and better maintain the house and grounds. We see ourselves as care-takers in many ways, helping this historic property to remain the local landmark it has become over the centuries. In 2009 we renovated our first holiday cottage, previously the ‘maison du gardien’ and now known as the Logis. In 2010 we purchased the neighbouring land and buildings which originally served as the farm to the chateau, providing milk, vegetables, beef and lamb to the then very affluent residents! A working farm no longer, it offered us the opportunity to expand our business with a second holiday rental, and to repatriate part of the La Prise heritage. The farmhouse was renovated in 2014. Our aim has always been to provide charming, luxury and private self catering accommodation for guests, providing them with a great place to stay whilst they explore everything this region has to offer.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our greatest asset is our situation. We are rural, but only a short drive to our local boulangerie, market, bars and restaurants. We benefit from access to all the amenities but also have the absolute peace and tranquility provided by the french countryside. Château de La Prise sits on 7 acres of land with gardens and lots of original features such as our pigeonnier and gatehouse, both of which are visible from the farmhouse. The neighbouring land and buildings is where you will find la Maison. The farmhouse sits on another 3 acres surrounded by lots of traditional old outbuildings, a courtyard, lawns, fruit trees, raised beds, large gateposts and huge open sided barn, or préau.

We are very fortunate to be able to offer our guests complete privacy as, unlike many other holiday properties, the farmhouse is totally separate from the main house with its own driveway, courtyard, garden, parking and PRIVATE POOL, all of which have been designed to ensure you are truly able to 'get away from it all' without the worry of neighbours or other guests. That said, we are based at the château so are on site and here to help if you need us.

Stunning property and lopool, full of French charm

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely, relaxing week at La Domaine, the newly renovated farmhouse was a delight to stay in and full of French charm without being chintzy. If you have small children the alarm on the pool could literally be a lifesaver, however we would recommended a few things are moved out of little ones reach in the kitchen! The owners were extremely helpful, sending us directions before our journey, organising a cot and a highchair as requested then greeted us when we arrived with a thoughtful welcome basket of local food. Would definitely rebook!

great property -relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

We knew the property would be good as the attention and service Lucy& Seb gave us in the booking and reservation process was first class . Very attentive to our special needs .

The property was all we expected from the description ( and more ) . Comfortable , well laid out , ideal for our kids who had the best time ever . The location was excellent, quiet and peaceful but close enough to find things to do .

We hired bikes ( which Lucy arranged for us ) and went for a ride almost every day. Our youngest daughter was able to go on the roads safely.

Would we recommend this - we have already booked to go back next year !!

It won't disappoint!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week at this property and after seeing the beautiful photos on the website it certainly didn't disappoint. The house is a credit to the owners and we had a very comfortable stay. Facilities were excellent and all kitted out to a very high standard.

Two doubles and a twin room with a fantastic family bathroom and a further shower room meant there was plenty of space for four adults plus kids. Great kitchen table to enjoy family meals as well as a seating area and bbq outside. The pool area was fantastic. All walled off so very private but also good for containing the little people!!! A covered area guaranteed some shade but plenty of room to lounge in the sun as well as a perfect seating area to catch the last of the day's rays with a glass of wine.

In the grounds of the chateau meaning the owners were on hand if any problems but suitably private. Lots to enjoy nearby if you can drag yourself away from the pool. Surgeres a 15 minute drive away and La Rochelle less than an hour away.

Wouldn't hesitate to book this place again - highly recommend. Thanks Lucy and Seb for a fantastic holiday

A stunning marraige of the old and new

  • 5 of 5

Having previously stayed at La Prise, we were aware of the welcome, attention to detail and the quality of the property that Lucy and Seb provide. We were shown La Ferme last year, (its first season) and were so impressed with what we saw that we decided to take our son and his family on a half term break this May.

We were not disappointed by the experience. La Ferme provides two double bedrooms, one for myself and my wife, one for our son and daughter in law, and a double room with single beds that the children occupied. There is a large bathroom, with a walk in shower and WC; and an on suite shower and WC attached to one of the double bedrooms. A modern kitchen/dinner that lacks nothing in terms of equipment, fridge, cooker , dishwasher and all the pots and pans that you could possibly needs.. There is a very comfortable lounge with TV, Video, and radio/CD player. The property was very clean and well maintained with quality furniture and fittings.

Outside is the swimming pool and sun area with ample sun loungers either in the sun or in the shade if it gets too hot. The pool went down a storm with the children (aged 5yrs and 7yrs) they were in at every chance. The pool is also fine for adults, its about 5ft 6ins deep .The pool also boasts a safety alarm just in case the children either sneak in or fall in! The gardens are well maintained providing a cool oasis with lots of bird life, and for children, small lizard that fascinated them, they never caught one no matter how hard they tried!

The Domaine de la Prise provides above all a peaceful, restful haven from the rush and hubbub of life in the UK. Lucy and Seb are there if you need them, but otherwise they stay in the background..

The property is situated within an hours drive of the coast at La Rochelle, or the Ile de Rey. Other interesting Towns are at a similar distance, as is the "Green Venice" area. Local Supermarkets at Surgeres, Mauze de le Mignone are less than 15mins drive away and the local boulangerie is a 6 mins drive away. There are plenty of restaurants in the area; the nearest is 5mins away and the owner speaks English. If sea food is your thing, Las Rochelle and the Ile de Rey provide numerous good restaurants.

We would recommend La Ferme without hesitation to friends and relatives, or anyone else who wants a restful, quality holiday.
