About the property

7 Bedroom Manor House in Porthmadog, Wales - Close To The Stunning Beaches Of The Llyn Peninsular

Snowdonia's hidden secret! Carregfelen is an quirky, luxurious, 5 Star Graded, 14th Century Manor House set on a private 2000 acre leafy estate on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. Surrounded by ancient oak woodlands, the Wern Estate is a paradise to walkers and bird watchers. The house has been lovingly restored by the Williams-Ellis family - the cladded extension was extended in the 1920's by Clough Williams-Ellis, creator of the nearby Italianate village of Portmeirion. Inside are twisty corridors, marvellous antique furniture and oak staircases. The splendid Dining Room, with antique oak refectory table and old oil paintings is reminiscent of a medieval hall and the cosy living room with it's huge original inglenook fireplace is perfect for pre-dinner drinks. The attic bedrooms have wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and the terraced gardens are a delight. In front of the house is a paved area with BBQ, slate topped table and benches with views of Moel y Gest. This is the gateway to explore the very best that North Wales has to offer.

Why Tamar Ferguson chose Gwynedd - Snowdonia

Carregfelen is the perfect place to enjoy a friends and family get together - to either celebrate a special occasion or just have a fantastic holiday.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We are all inclined to keep secret the magic of the house and gardens, so that the memory is exclusively ours! At the same time, we cannot resist extolling the tranquil beauty of the place to others. We will need another fix before too long!” DG - Warrington

We had a wonderful time at Carregfelen. I’m sure that I will be repeating what previous guests have said when I tell you that it was very special to stay at a house that truly felt like a family home that was being generously shared with all its history and memories. We all agreed that it’s the best holiday house we’ve ever stayed at. A.T. Winchester

Our wedding was fantastic and I thought that the rest of the week could be a let down, until I arrived at Carregfelen. What a fabulous house and it was a real pleasure staying there. The house itself is beautiful, but also the many interesting and unusual contents – you need a week just to take it all in. I We just didn’t want to leave. LC

Utility Room: The Utility Room has a microwave, washer, tumble drier and Belfast sink. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Beds are made up for arrival with choice of traditional bedding or marshmallow duvets with fine thread Egyptian Cotton. House and Beach towels are provided with Crabtree & Evelyn guest soaps. We include a mid-week clean. Other: Leading from the kitchen, a few steps take you up to the top Sitting Room/Playroom with comfortable sofa and armchairs, open fireplace, toy box and masses of books. There is a 32" T.V. DVD Player, SKY Box Office, iPod dock and Wireless Broadband.

Something for all the family

  • 5 of 5

We just had a fantastic stay in this lovely place. It's a really quirky house, something interesting around every corner but very comfortable and homely. We absolutely loved it.

The property is really handy for all the nearby attractions but nicely tucked away for complete privacy. Highly recommend

  • 4 of 5

Very quirky and cosy house, had a lovely week with family,it was nice to see the owners nic nacks around the house, the only thing that we thought was a lack of comfy chairs in the lounge, other than that it was all very lovely and very clean.

for all the family

  • 4 of 5

We have now visited Carregfelen on about 10 occasions. We first discovered it in 2003, which we think was the first year the owners had allowed visitors to enjoy their wonderful house. For the last 4 or 5 years we have said to our family ‘Enjoy this as we will probably not return to Carregfelen next year’. And each time a deputation of grandchildren has demanded we come back the following year. We love it there, but don’t want the rest of the family to run out of things to do there – little chance of that it seems.

We are three generations of visitors, and the house fits us comfortably, with each part of the family having its own space in which to chill out (including two separate staircases and plenty of bathrooms) yet with sufficient communal space to fit us all. The house and surroundings simply lend themselves to having fun, relaxing and being together. It is a perfect base: spacious, quirky, comfortable and well equipped. We are always very happy to re-discover that the owners are continually improving the house and gardens, and that they present us with a beautifully clean, tidy and welcoming house each time we arrive.

The area is rich in castles, railways, beaches, mines, restaurants and pubs, surrounded by beautiful countryside, but with tranquillity when needed. We feel privileged to have enjoyed Carregfelen for so long, and look forward to doing so again and again.

A truly fabulous family holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Carregfelen 6 times now and had a fantastic time with our extended family on every occasion. The house, grounds, location and welcome are second to none and we really feel that we are stepping into a home not a holiday house every time we arrive.

The stunning beaches of the Llyn Peninsular are on your doorstep. Black Rock Beach with it's huge sandy bay is only a 10 minute drive and the seaside town of Criccieth with it's sandy beach and wonderful castle is only a few minutes away, as is the harbour at Porthmadog. Abersoch and Harlech are within easy reach.

The nearest airports are Liverpool and Manchester. The nearest ferry port is at Holyhead on the island of Anglesey.

The house is close to Portmeirion, the amazing Italianate village created by Clough Williams-Ellis. The castles of Harlech and Criccieth are only a short drive away, whilst Caernarfon castle is well worth a day's visit. Llanberis with it's West Highland Railway and the legendary Snowdon Mountain is close by.

Further Details:

Included in the cost is a "Taste of Wales" Welcome Pack - home made jams and bara brith cake and a breakfast hamper with bacon, sausages and free range eggs from our local butcher.

Criccieth has plenty of independant shops and Porthmadog has a large Tesco.

We also supply a basket of logs for the open fires (cut from our own woods) and a bag of charcoal for the BBQ.
