About the property

7 Bedroom 5* Luxurious Manor House with Mountain Views near Criccieth on Llyn Peninsula

Carregfelen is a beautiful, unusual and quirky 14th Century 7 bedroom Manor House set on its own wooded 2000 acre Estate between Porthmadog and Criccieth on the Llyn Peninsula. Sleeping up to 11 guests, it was extended in the 1920's by the owner's Uncle (Clough Williams-Ellis), and is full of charm and character. Outside are sloping lawns, a wildflower meadow and orchard which burst with fruit over the summer. Inside are twisty corridors, marvellous antique furniture and staircases that date back to the 1600s. The ancient oak woodlands are a joy to explore. The ground floor comprises a beautifully furnished hall, a cosy sitting room with an inglenook, a magnificent dining room with an oak refectory table and a lovely kitchen. Trot up two steps to find a sitting room for children – sofa, toys, books, TV – and two good bedrooms (one double and one twin). On the upper floors are the rest of the bedrooms, full of character and style, and big old-fashioned bathrooms with up-to-the-minute showers. No need to fight for the views: every room has one. Add to this high speed broadband and contemporary fittings and you won’t want to stray too far.

Why Tamar Ferguson chose Porthmadog

Carregfelen is the perfect place to enjoy a friends and family get together - to either celebrate a special occasion or just have a fantastic holiday. We are happy to provide a meal ready for arrival or can even cook for you during your stay.

What makes this house unique

The views from Carregfelen are breathtaking - all of the bedrooms have views across the gardens and to the surrounding hills. Although you are totally secluded whilst staying with us we are only a short drive to the pretty seaside town of Criccieth.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We are all inclined to keep secret the magic of the house and gardens, so that the memory is exclusively ours! At the same time, we cannot resist extolling the tranquil beauty of the place to others. We will need another fix before too long!” DG - Warrington

We had a wonderful time at Carregfelen. I’m sure that I will be repeating what previous guests have said when I tell you that it was very special to stay at a house that truly felt like a family home that was being generously shared with all its history and memories. We all agreed that it’s the best holiday house we’ve ever stayed at. A.T. Winchester

Our wedding was fantastic and I thought that the rest of the week could be a let down, until I arrived at Carregfelen. What a fabulous house and it was a real pleasure staying there. The house itself is beautiful, but also the many interesting and unusual contents – you need a week just to take it all in. I We just didn’t want to leave. LC

Carregfelen is a much loved and exceptionally comfortable family home with lots of memorabilia and fascinating history. Both young and old will love exploring it's quirky staircases and wooden corridors. Although there are sufficient beds for 13 guests, we rarely take bookings for more than 10 adults. Beds are made u for arrival with a choice of traditional bedding or marshmallow duvets with fine thread Egyptian cotton sheets. House and beach towels are provided with Crabtree and Evelyn shower gels. Although the house dates back to the 14th Century, we offer contemporary bathrooms and kitchen - at last we have infinity broadband! The gardens really are delightful and visibly change with the seasons. There are huge lawns, an orchard bursting with fruit and a wildflower meadow. We have started to cultivate our own bees and hopefully will be able to provide honey to our guests.

Carregfelen is a really interesting house in a brilliant situation with a wonderful view.

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family were intrigued by the unusual layout of the house with its nooks and crannies, and 'historical' contents just like a mini stately home! A great place for a game of hide-and-seek.

Everything was supplied for a successful self-catering holiday, with special appreciation to Vivien for looking after us so well, from the lovely meal she cooked for our arrival, the beautifully laid table in the dining room, enhanced by the candelabras. We had everything we needed to make our first meal so enjoyable, not like the traditional mad scramble.

We had plenty of room to spread out. The children each had their own room, and the beds were very comfortable.

As far as the kitchen was concerned, all utensils were more then adequate. Plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses, cooking pans and dishes, double oven and the all-important dishwasher for a family of 10, made our stay all the more enjoyable.

It was nice to have Vivien and Anne to do a mid-week clean, even though this was totally unexpected, and to know that Vivien was contactable if we had any problems. She was very friendly and offered help if we needed it.

We were lucky with the weather, except for one wet day. Otherwise dry and sunny, but it could have been a little warmer, but this did not stop us getting out and about and seeing the local places of interest. Some of us climbed Snowdon!

Altogether a really good holiday.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Carregfelen - we always ensure that our guests feel completely at home and part of the family. Do come and stay with us again - don't forget that we have 3 other cottages - two of them sleeping up to 6 guests and our brand new one which sleeps 4 guests. Tamar

Country elegance

  • 5 of 5

Loved the house and grounds, it was as if we were guests in a family home. The house was full of interest, the garden delightful and the grounds provided a safe and secure environment for the children to play in. Having toys already there also helped keep the children amused when the weather wasn't quite so pleasant! The location was stunning with so many places to visit and things to see and do within such close proximity.

A very helpful housekeeper to keep an eye on things made sure that everything was as it should be.

Would definitely consider a return visit and would have no hesitation in recommending this place to family and friends.

Something for all the family

  • 5 of 5

We just had a fantastic stay in this lovely place. It's a really quirky house, something interesting around every corner but very comfortable and homely. We absolutely loved it.

The property is really handy for all the nearby attractions but nicely tucked away for complete privacy. Highly recommend

Lovely house in beautiful surroundings.

  • 4 of 5

Very quirky and cosy house, had a lovely week with family,it was nice to see the owners nic nacks around the house, the only thing that we thought was a lack of comfy chairs in the lounge, other than that it was all very lovely and very clean.

for all the family

  • 4 of 5

We have now visited Carregfelen on about 10 occasions. We first discovered it in 2003, which we think was the first year the owners had allowed visitors to enjoy their wonderful house. For the last 4 or 5 years we have said to our family ‘Enjoy this as we will probably not return to Carregfelen next year’. And each time a deputation of grandchildren has demanded we come back the following year. We love it there, but don’t want the rest of the family to run out of things to do there – little chance of that it seems.

We are three generations of visitors, and the house fits us comfortably, with each part of the family having its own space in which to chill out (including two separate staircases and plenty of bathrooms) yet with sufficient communal space to fit us all. The house and surroundings simply lend themselves to having fun, relaxing and being together. It is a perfect base: spacious, quirky, comfortable and well equipped. We are always very happy to re-discover that the owners are continually improving the house and gardens, and that they present us with a beautifully clean, tidy and welcoming house each time we arrive.

The area is rich in castles, railways, beaches, mines, restaurants and pubs, surrounded by beautiful countryside, but with tranquillity when needed. We feel privileged to have enjoyed Carregfelen for so long, and look forward to doing so again and again.

A truly fabulous family holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Carregfelen 6 times now and had a fantastic time with our extended family on every occasion. The house, grounds, location and welcome are second to none and we really feel that we are stepping into a home not a holiday house every time we arrive.

This is an area of outstanding natural beauty and Carregfelen is the ideal base for exploring the mountains and beaches of Snowdonia. The quirky Italiante Village of Portmeirion (which was designed by my great uncle - Clough Williams-Ellis, who also designed the gardens at Carregfelen) is a short drive away. The Prisoner was filmed there in 1967 and today there are plenty of shops of cafes to suit all tastes. We recommend a walk in the Gwylt (the woodlands in Portmeirion) for the views towards Borth y Gest, and, of course, playing in the sands.

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway line has now opened between Porthmadog and Caernarfon. Mount Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and England – you can either take up the challenge of walking to the summit or take the little railway to the summit from the station at Llanberis. The visitor’s Centre has now opened – enjoy some of the local bara brith cake whilst marvelling at the breathtaking views!

Coast/Beach: The stunning beaches of the Llyn Peninsular are on your doorstep. Black Rock Sands are only minutes away Criccieth with its sandy beach and wonderful castle is close by, as is the harbour at Porthmadog. Abersoch and Harlech are within easy reach. Worth visiting are Llanbedrog, Nefyn, Porthdinllaen and Pwllheli.

Criccieth has a couple of good eating places, deli, butcher and baker. Porthmadog has a good size tesco plus lots of independent shops.
