Cottage Recently Refurbished To Very High Standard, With 3/4 Acre Garden

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
Cottage on the River Tamar, near Tavistock and Dartmoor, South Devon, England - In Beautiful Countryside, In The Tamar Valley, Next To Dartmoor

North Ward Cottage is on the Bere Peninsula cut off from the crowds by the River Tamar on one side and the crystal clear River Tavy on the other. There is a criss-crossed of paths to allow you to explore the Peninsula. Near by Tavistock is a thriving market town with swimming pool, tennis courts, putting greens, arts cinema etc. Dartmoor, good golf courses, riding, fishing, biking etc are within easy reach as are north or south Cornish beaches. But basically North Ward Cottage and its immediate surroundings are so lovely you should not need to go far. In 2009 / 2010 North Ward Cottage was extended and completely refurbished to become low carbon. Changes have included increased insulation, under-floor heating, new double-glazed windows and doors and using a heat pump to heat the cottage.

About the Owner

Family-owned holiday cottage, bought at auction in 1971 and twice extended and refurbished. It is well-used throughout the year by the family, and so we make it as homely as we can, but we are keen for it to be used by others too.

We run it on a not-for-profit basis, in and use any profits from the rental to maintain the property in excellent condition. We've been going here for most of our holidays for the last 40 years!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A memorable week for family including 3 small girls and grandparents, and an uncle at weekends... highlights included two boat trips to Cothele and treasure hunts in the garden"

"A lovely, lovely spot and we'll hopefully be back again. We had a really fantastic time and love the house and garden - spectacular views. Can't wait til next year - we hope to book again"

"We found a corner of heaven at North Ward Cottage! The accommodation is so comfortable and inviting and became 'home' to us in no time. The dairy cows were most neighbourly and we enjoyed the occasional bovine rush hour by the front door!"

Very happy holidays

  • 5 of 5

I have really enjoyed staying at this cottage and have done for several holidays now during the summer and winter. The cottage is spacious but cozy at the same time and is set in beautiful countryside. The view from the kitchen sink is just lovely. Its a very peaceful place with a really nice garden to relax in as well as walks right from the door step. The cottage has everything you need for a very relaxing and 'home from home' holiday. I would highly recommend it and will be going again soon.

Peaceful, gentle and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

The house is very well equipped and has been restored beautifully. A great position for a peaceful walking/cycling holiday or short stay. We walked locally one day and then on Dartmoor which is only a short drive away. Highly recommended.

North Ward Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Lovely cottage exactly as described, clean and well maintained. Very spacious and comfortable and so peaceful. Everything we needed was provided but not there long enough to take advantage of the outside games. Gardens were great for children to explore. Views from the cottage were lovely. Slight problem with the hot water system but one of the owners was very helpful and described how to master the boiler and we were fine. There was a lot of local information provided and generally the cottage was well situated for visits to devon and cornwall. Great value for money.

Location

From the Owner

It is a beautiful and secluded location, far from the crowds, but also within reach of an enormous range of local activities.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The nearest nice coastal beaches are about 1 hour away, but there are river beaches much closer and also river swimming and swimming in some of Dartmoor's pools. Much more information is available, as well as local tips, once you are there - in our cottage A-Z folder

Travel:

Nearest airports are Exeter (1 hour), and Bristol (2 hours)

Bere Alston train station is 2 miles away

We have been there for a few days before without a car, and used local trains and buses - but really a car is more or less essential for most

Distances:

Bere Alson is 5 minutes drive and Tavistock 15 minutes

Dartmoor is 20 minutes away and Plymouth 30 minutes by car or by train

Further Details:

The cottage is set in a lovely rural area and there are several walks that start direct from the cottage. It is about half way along the new 32-mile Tamar Discovery Trail that stretches from Plymouth to Launceston. In 2006 the Mining in the Tamar Valley was accorded Unesco World Heritage Site status. An important part of this Heritage site is Morwellham Quay where you can experience the way the Quay was in 1860 with costumed staff, railways, water wheels etc.

The Tamar Valley is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is full of wildlife - particularly birds. Woodpeckers have been seen on the cottage lawn although finches and warblers are more common. Buzzards regularly hover overhead. This section of the Tamar valley is quiet with hardly any tourists except a few ramblers on the paths that thread through the area. Walking down the Tamar, bird watchers can see huge reed beds used by wading birds for nesting.

Bere Alston is the nearest village but Tavistock is close-by and is an attractive market town. The Wharf in Tavistock offers arts and cinema as well as tennis and bowls. Cornwall and Cothele House, a National Trust Property are just on the other side of the river, a short trip by ferry, but a longer drive. You can hire canoes and other boats to use on the river. There is mountain biking, tennis and golf near by.
