Overview

Property

Updated: 27-Oct-2016
Cottage in Mareuil sur Lay Dissais, Nr. Lucon, Vendee, Pays de la Loire, France - A Riverside Gem, Away From it all in the Vendee Countryside, but Close to Amenities and Beaches

The guest cottage has recently been renovated in traditional style, retaining all its character with exposed oak beams and terracotta tiles throughout. Modern touches have been added, such as the fully fitted kitchen on one side of the main living room and a wet room with open shower. The 6 x 6m oak-beamed living room has a magnificent fireplace with wood burning stove, seating for up to six, and a fully equipped kitchen. The master bedroom has a king size bed, and the second bedroom, with children’s bunk beds, is located between the master bedroom and shower room and has a window overlooking the terrace. The view to the front looks over the mill race and weir towards the river and island; the living room back door gives on to a south west facing terrace with barbecue and garden furniture. Guests are welcome to use the 14x7m swimming pool from May to September.

About the Owner

We bought our former watermill in 1988 and now split our time 50/50 between London and the Vendee.

We like the area so much that a couple of years ago we bought a piece of land on the hill overlooking the nearby town, and have built a new home, to our exacting specifications, to use in the winter months and in our eventual old age!!

Location

From the Owner

In 1988, when Kate was pregnant with our first son, we stepped up the search for a house in rural France. What we found was idyllic (and amazingly accessible). We've always been involved in property development, so the renovation task didn't daunt us, and we now have a lovely house for ourselves as well as a charming guest cottage. Our 2 boys spent all their school holidays here, and even had a year at primary school in Mareuil. Now in their early twenties, they still love to come here, and truly appreciate how lucky they are to have such a unique holiday home.

Travel:

If travelling by car from the UK, the Western Channel ports of St Malo, Caen or Cherbourg are the most convenient, within a 3 or 4 hour drive. The Channel Tunnel is an easy but long drive, being motorway all the way but taking 6 hours from Calais.

Fly/Drive to La Rochelle or Nantes is a very competitive alternative, with Easyjet flying from Gatwick and Bristol, Ryanair from Stansted, FlyBe from Southampton and Jet2 from Leeds and Edinburgh. Both airports are less than an hour's drive.

Distances:

Mareuil-sur-Lay (2 miles) has a supermarket, a good selection of small shops and several restaurants and bars. Lucon, 8 miles south, has a wider range of shops, hypermarkets and restaurants, and La Roche sur Yon, 15 miles north, is the Departmental capital.

The beautiful old port of La Rochelle, 50 minutes south, is always worth a visit,

the amazing theme park of the Puy du Fou is 45 minutes east, and the Marais Poitevin, or Green Venice, is less than an hour away.

Facilities

From the Owner

The Vendee is just far enough south to guarantee (almost!) lovely summer weather, and yet is less than a day's drive from London (and now we have the benefit of low cost airlines flying in to La Rochelle, less than an hour away). We believe that our riverside location is almost unique - hidden away from the nearest road, with nature all around us, but also with a lovely swimming pool, and only a short drive or cycle ride to the local town. Also ideal for dogs and their owners with so much space to explore and no danger from any traffic - just ducks to chase!!
