About Anne Bamber

We’ve been scouring the Lakes for a property for many years. Having looked at many places in many locations we were simply bowled over with the Rivendell Lodge. We think it’s the perfect house in the perfect place. This is our future retirement home. In building it we’ve taken a great deal of care and we hope you’ll appreciate the quality and attention to detail we’ve taken to make it special. As you may have guessed we’re Lord of the Ring fans, so as Bilbo said of Rivendell, “A perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or storytelling or singing, or just sitting and thinking the best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear and sadness”. As soon as we retire we’ll be spending a great deal of time at Rivendell, but until that day.....

Why Anne Bamber chose England

Rivendell could not be more central within the Lake District National Park. It’s in a very peaceful location with stunning views of Esthwaite Water and surrounding hills. It’s within a short drive of Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere and right on your doorstep is Grizedale Forest for some of the best Mountain Biking, Near Sawrey - home of Beatrix Potter or Esthwaite Water for Fly Fishing. It’s also a walker’s dream. From Rivendell you can walk directly around Grizedale Forest, to Tarn Hows or up Latterbarrow. If you’re more ambitious try the Old Man of Coniston or the Langdale Pikes, both of which are a short drive away. The local gem is Hawkshead village, which is a short 10 minute walk by pleasant path, with cobbled streets, white washed cottages, 4 real ale pubs, cafes and shops.

What makes this bungalow unique

Rivendell was commissioned to our internal design in 2012 by Retreat Lodges. It’s based on an award winning design and is built from organic cedar wood to the latest modern timber framed building standards. There’s gas central heating but also under floor heating in the Entrance / boot room and the 2 bathrooms plus an eye catching modern log burning stove. The quality of the finish is of the highest order, from the fully equipped modern kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms to the floor to ceiling double glazed windows and French doors that together with the high apex ceiling give the property a light airy feeling yet extremely cosy and comforting. We’ve put a great deal of thought and effort to kit the property with the highest quality furniture, all designed to make your stay memorable.

Guestbook comments from the owner

29th June 2013.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in your beautiful lodge, everything was so perfect and well thought out. Everything you wanted was there and all high spec. We could not have asked for a more perfect place to stay in.

The dogs enjoyed the veranda as they could just sit and watch the cows and the sheep in the fields, we just enjoyed sitting there and enjoying the view of the lake.

We had some hot and sunny weather which made it even better.

I would like to thank you for my card and champagne it was lovely surprise and it was enjoyed with our dinner on my birthday.

Best birthday / holiday ever.

Would love to come back soon.

Thank you again,

Anna Walker and family.

25th January 2013

Had a fantastic time sledging and building snowmen, great to return to such a lovely cosy and comfortable lodge. Our 4th stay in a retreat lodge and this has been the nicest.

Already planning a return visit.

Thank you,

Nick, Annette, Jack and Isabel

The lakes in style

  • 5 of 5

The lodge "Rivendell" is a beautifully presented retreat and is finished to a very high specification; I cannot fault the amenities and little homely touches and everything from cutlery, pots and pans to linenware and towels is top quality.

Esthwaite View proved to be a tranquil place with the views and scenery every bit as good as described. We had every type of weather thrown at us during our four days from sunbathing sunshine to blizzards of snow and we were always comfortable in the lodge, particularly when we got the wood burner going! An excellent base for exploring the Lake District.

We only hope that there will be a vacancy available for us when we try to book a break later in the year!

We had a brilliant stay in Rivendell...... the location was perfect with gorgeous views & a short walk into Hawkeshead with plenty of dog friendly pubs.......

The Lodge was 'top spec' - warm, spotless, comfortable, spacious for 6 of us & 'four legs'...... wood burner to aspire to.......

Thank you....

The local gem is Hawkshead village, which is a short 10 minute walk by road (whilst quiet you do need to be careful, particularly at night so take a torch and wear bright clothes) or path (turn right out of Esthwaite View Lodge Park to the road leading up to Howe farm and follow the path round the Lodge park on the other side of the stream).

Hawkshead is protected from cars (the centre is pedestrianized) and comprises of cobbled lanes of low white washed cottages, decked out with flowers in the summer.

For those days when you just want to curl up in front of the Log fire and watch a good film, particularly when the winds blowing the rain across Esthwaite water… we’ve installed the full Sky HD TV – with Sky Entertainment Extra+, Movies and Sports channels.
