Wine tasting tours- Les Caves Bailly Lapierre- brilliant! Free wifi (you get free glasses with tour). Cycle the canal route, ten miles north and south. Stunning. Park at Mailly-La-Ville by the boulangerie, visiting Clamecy and having a lovely picnic, visiting Vezelay- beautiful, market on Wednesday. Lovely bread at Montillot. Croissants, pain aux raisins Friday and Saturday. Cycling around the villages. Outdoor seating was very comfortable! Loved the outdoor lighting as well. Spent every day out on the patio and ate all meals outside. Nice to watch all the wildlife, particularly the birds of prey. Grottes D'Arcy-Sur-Cure fantastic! Temperature 18-30 degrees during the week, beautiful weather with a couple of rainy sessions.

Excellent rural setting
We booked the house for its rural setting, generous accommodation and access to historic towns and villages. The house was spacious and well equipped, providing a perfect base for our holiday. Vezelay was outstanding and we also enjoyed visits to Avallon and touring through the Yonne river valley. Walks along the wonderful Nivernais canal and swimming locally at Mailly le Ville and Coulange provided local activities. The Thursday market at Chatel Censoir was worth a visit as were the views from the ramparts at Mailly le Chateau. At the end of the day we enjoyed the terrace, views and excellent local wine.
What a fantastic place!
We are a family of four who love travelling in France and have stayed in quite a few lovely places but this rate up there as the best so far. We were welcomed by Sharn and Pete who showed us around what was to become our home for the next few days and we were more than happy with what we found. There is a spacious, well equipped kitchen, a large indoor dining area and a very comfortable lounge with tv featuring both French and UK channels. We were then led to a games room where there was a pool table, dart board and bar area. To the front there was a very large dining and lounge area which is where we spent most of our time (eating, drinking and star gazing!). Upstairs was just as well thought-out with comfortable, roomy bedrooms and a bathroom with shower.
We had been to Disneyland Paris before going to Yonnes and were looking forward to some rest and relaxation which we certainly had at Les Chenes. Although there are several places to visit locally we found it hard to drag ourselves away and only managed a couple of day trips (Vezeley is a must). We'll just have to go back to France to see Dijon another time!
A little piece of heaven on earth.
We have just returned from La Perriere for a week of peace and tranquility and this is exactly what you get.The house was clean, spacious, comfortable and thoughtfully equipped and lovingly maintained. The lounge is comfortable with t.v which receives English stations as well as French,a large games room is set up for pool, a darts board and cards etc to while away the time. The setting is idyllic with the house surrounded by fields and forests. The silence occasionally interrupted by the sound of chickens and the neighbouring donkey. The owners, Pete and Sharn, provided travel details and there is a fact filled folder regarding sightseeing, local amenities and contact numbers in case of emergencies or minor queries. There are ample opportunities for adventure seekers, although we were only interested in sightseeing and relaxing. There are also numerous villages and towns to explore with magnificent scenery.A must to visit are the medieval town of Vezellay ,with breathtaking views from the cathedral, and Chatel Censoir is also a must. If u are looking for adventure or peace and quiet this is perfect and we would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Les Chenes. Sumptuous, extremely well equipped, perfect rural location, fantastic surroundings inside and outside. Within 15 min's you are in pure French rural towns/hamlets, within 35 min's you are in spectacular French cities. The area is set in rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and fantastic rivers and canals, (which we fished.) Things to do. The caves of Arcy-sur-cure are fantastic, (huge caves of stalagmite and stalactite formations and underground lagoons, with neanderthal paintings). The City of Auxerre is as spectacular to see from a distance set against the massive canal as it is to walk around, high end fashion to back street eateries. Vezelay, a hilltop town steeped in history and religion, dotted with little shops selling everything from art to handcrafted wool/mohair, to lovely wines, as you walk to the Church at the top, where the last remains of Mary Magdelain lay in the Vaults, very much worth a visit. Mailly-la-ville, just a few min's away is set between a river and a canal, it offers, swimming, (with sandy beach!) beautiful walks, fishing, cafe/bar, games, crazy golf, etc. I could go on as there is a lot to discover in the area, and i have only just brushed over a bit of it, but i feel i should mention the house, (before i run out of words!) Les Chennes. It is fantastic, none of the pic's you see of the place will prepare you for how good it really is. It is the sort of place that even though the weather was 1st class (102 degrees, top temp of our stay) it would have been no bad thing to have a rainy day or 2. It has everything, full English/french satellite TV (HD) + Dvd player. Music systems, (Bosse speakers! :) ) Excellent pool/darts and bar room, The living area(s) are extremely comfortable and spacious, the open plan kitchen is even somewhere i wanted to be, (and i'm a fella!) The bedrooms and bathroom/shower rooms where large, v/comfortable, and extremely well presented. Also worth a mention, the hosts have not only made Les Chennes', somewhere you actually want to be living in, as to just 'based in', they have stocked it so well with everything you could need (10 fold!) There is even a cocktail shaker in the bar! Overall, 4 adults and 2 Children (11 & 14) had a glorious week in an area of outstanding beauty in a house we called 'Home' for a week. Thank you.
From the Owner
“En route to view another house, we saw a sign on a fence. It caught our attention and when we spotted the top of Les Chenes set back behind a meadow, we had to stop. As we turned down the track and it came into view, both knew right away it was what we wanted, and that was the end of the trip. It needed some TLC, and for the last five years we have spent every vacation there making it our home. It has been an interesting time, and we have made some great friends in the nearby hamlet. Burgundy is a beautiful area- completely unspoilt and offering a mixture of rural calm and bustling medieval cities. The summer can be long- we have known 25 degrees in March as well as October.”

Local attractions and activities include the UNESCO world heritage site nearby at Vézelay, a hilltop town on the route to Santiago de Compostella. Visitors come from all over the world to see the ancient and huge Basilica in which the relics of Mary Magdalen are kept, and from which one of the Crusades set off. Walking up the ancient road past restaurants, art and gift shops is an experience. There are many other restaurants in local villages and towns from rustic local ones, loved by the French, all the way up to two Michelin 3-stars. The area is rich in history- there are many medieval churches, chateaux and other buildings in the area, as well as prehistoric and Roman sites. Walking and cycling starts on the doorstep, through lanes, forests or along rivers or the Canal du Nivernais. Other local activities include horse-riding, swimming, canoeing, fishing, hot-air ballooning, and quad biking. For food, clothes or antiques there are markets at Vézelay, Avallon and Clamecy on Saturday, Dijon on Tuesday Friday and Saturday, Auxerre on Wednesday, and Chatel Censoir on Thursday. Wine producers offer tours and tasting at Chablis, Irancy, Beaune as well as many other famous Burgundian appellations. From the Owner
“Its appeal, for us, is the sense of space and calm. There is nothing better than to sit on the terrace in the evening sun with a glass of wine and just watch the fields and the birds, and the occasional deer in the distance. There is a dining table out there too, to continue the experience through dinner! Afterwards, your private bar with darts and pool is always open. If you fancy a walk in the country or forest, you don't have far to go to begin, just the end of the garden, yet the restaurants, amenities and medieval sites start just a short drive away.”
