About the property

Comfortable and cosy Town house with history all around! The battlefields of WW1&2, Medieval towns, sweeping beaches and pretty villages.

The house is perfect for those visitors who want a peaceful break. Suited more to Adults than children, there are many excellent restaurants to indulge in delicious French cuisine, from Michelin stars to bustling brasseries. The area is full of history. This is a pretty Medieval town with a lovely walk around the ramparts right on your doorstep. Connections with both the 1st and 2nd World Wars are rich in the area with the Bay of the Somme just a short drive away. Nearby Le Touquet has bracing walks on the beach and chic shopping and for golfers there are numerous excellent courses in the area, both link and forest. This is a fabulously quirky house, its exterior painted in a distinctive green and blue. Accommodation is spread out on four floors, accessed from the cosy sitting room by a spiral metal staircase so really it is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. There are two comfortable double bedrooms one on the first floor and one on the second and on the very top floor a further twin/double room in the converted attic. Also on you will find a small 'secret' enclosed garden, perfect to enjoy that glass of rose in the evening. There are two toilets (one on the first floor) the second in the 2nd floor bathroom where there is also a bath with shower. La Maison Verte is a second home for the English owners and it is furnished as such, family paintings adorn the walls and there is antique furniture and a well equipped kitchen that is suitable for home cooking using delicious ingredients from the weekly markets. Montreuil has a superb cheese shop, great wine shops and of course wonderful bakers for your daily (curved!) croissant fix. The house is perfectly placed for you to be able to just wander out and enjoy all that the town has to offer. Guest should be aware that he house is located on a cobbled street, very French but sometimes a little noisy at what passes for rush hour in this quiet town! It does also mean that you are very centrally located and can walk everywhere in the town. Please note there is NO TV although we do have a TV set with DVD player on which you can watch a range of films and family games to play (there is a small selection in the house) but the emphasis here is on getting away from the world for a while, enjoying the company of friends and family and relaxing and exploring this beautiful town. We now also have WiFi available. You will find many super restaurants to choose from in the town and plenty of good walks and places of interest but to truly get the most from the area we do recommend a car as transport such a busses and frequent trains are limited.

About Isabel Murphy

John Potter works in South East England for a property company running properties for Sainsbury's. Juliet runs a small theatre in Tenterden, Kent. They have five adult children so getting away to France for a bit of peace is essential, though taking the grandchildren is now beginning to be fun.

Isabel Murphy purchased this house in 2003

Why Isabel Murphy chose Montreuil

We bought this quirky house in Montreuil as a retreat at weekends away from the hubub of working in England during the week. We love France for all that it offers, the people, the wine and the food and the friends we have made locally.

It was a simple choice to buy in the Pas de Calais as it is in easy reach of England making it a short trip over at weekends. We had visited Montreuil on many occasions before and it was an easy decision to buy a house within the ramparts, which was easy to lock up and leave.

The Sea is only a short while away and there is an amazing choice of activities and at least nine miles of beach running from Le Touquet to Berck, then onward to the Baie du Somme. The history of this part of Northern France is fascinating and there is always lots to do.

What makes this house unique

There is so much to do - the house is bang in the middle of Montreuil, most restaurants and bars are within walking distance - so no need for taxis. Although the accommodation is over four floors it is very cosy and the well equipped kitchen is a pleasure to cook in and there is so much planned for this adaptable space. There is now a secret garden too, which is delightful. One of the pleasures is taking a picnic down to the ramparts or walking to the main square for the market and people watching, or taking a walk under the ramparts to the villages below. The house is great for entertaining and we often invite friends for lunch or supper. Christmas is always fun.

When we take children there is bicycling, kayaking and riding as well as the beach, and a chance for them to learn about the French (language practise!) and their (and our) history.

Home from home.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, centrally located house from which to enjoy the historic town of Montreuil-sur-Mer. The house was well-equipped and comfortable, within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and the (Saturday) market. We easily managed the spiral staircase but older people may struggle. Recommended x

A lovely, well equipped house.

  • 5 of 5

The house is conveniently located near the centre of Montreuil, with a cafe right next door, and a bakery just around the corner. There are many good restaurants, shops, and lovely views just a short walk away.

On arrival we were met at the house by Isabel, who was very helpful, and answered all of our questions and showed us how to use the keys, oven etc. The house itself is fantastically well equipped, with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. The house is clean, beautifully decorated, and well laid out, with good sized rooms, but there are a lot of stairs! On the first floor there is even a little secret garden, unfortunately it was a little chilly in April to make the most of it, but on a warm evening it would be a lovely spot for a glass of wine and a bite to eat.

The beds were comfortable, and although the cars are noisy when they drive on the cobbles outside, very few go past late at night.

We would definitely come back to stay at this house again, I highly recommend it.

This is a great place

  • 5 of 5

I have been several times to this house in Montreuil and it is most comfortable. It is like a home from home and wonderfully equipped especialy if you like to cook (which most of us don't when on holiday!) The beds are comfortable and it always very clean. The owners have made so many improvements since the beginning, the latest being a marvellous terrace garden so you can sit outside - unusual for these town houses.

Being right in the centre of the gorgeous little town of Montreuil, everything you need is within a short stroll. Great boulangeries, and lovely gift shops as well as some fun restaurants.

I enjoyed the whole atmosphere, the market, the trips to nearby Le Touquet, the strolls round the ramparts.

A great place for a short or longer getaway and very good value for money. Thoroughly recommended

Special interest holidays:

History of World Wars 1 and 2, with General Hague's headquarters within the town and many military graveyards in the vicinity.

The town was also the setting for Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and each year there is a Son et Lumiere to celebrate this.

Weird and wonderful - le Frappa Dingue - an assault course to raise money for charity; A soup festival for all, the fish race, bicycle races, vintage car races, the endurance motorbike race at le Touquet in February - always something to do.

By car there are several sandy beaches within 10-15 km. Some offer sporting activities - sand yachting and windsurfing. Others have activities for children and Le Touquet offer a beach and shopping! Within half an hour's drive there is a Bird Sanctuary and the Bay of the Somme.

Coming from Calais take the A16 to the A26, signed Boulogne. Continue down this road until Junction 26 signed Le Touquet and Montreuil. There is a toll on this road 2.80€. You pay as you come off the motorway. Take the N39 to Montreuil and follow the road for 7 Km until you come to a large roundabout, take the right turn through the gates and up into the toen. When you hit the cobbles that is Rue Pierre Ledent.
