Farmhouse Gite and BnB in Arces, Nr. Royan, Poitou-Charentes, France - 4 Double/Twin En Suite Bedrooms

Viki and Richard welcome you to their comfortable and tranquil home in Arces, close to Royan in South West France. We are lucky to be able to enjoy the peace of the countryside while being only 10 minutes from the nearest beaches. We are a Finnish/English couple who have become happily installed here in SW France. We have recently renovated our lovely 18th century farmhouse to provide not only a home but also comfortable and restful gite. The original farmhouse, a Charentaise demi-longère has been dedicated to spacious and comfortable gite with 4 en suite bedrooms, and we have created our own living space in the barns and farm buildings. We have lived and worked in the area for many a year and know our way around well; we shall be here to provide you with all help and assistance to help you make the most of your stay in the beautiful Charente Maritime. So come on down!!

About Richard Borsey

We are Viki and Richard, a Finnish/ English couple who have settled here in the Charente Maritime where the wine is rich, the food is fresh and the weather is warm! After an eclectic mix of professional activities (from IT to astrology courses; from physiotherapy to grape picking) we have settled on our passion - writing and performing music (we have a securely soundproofed recording studio so don't worry). We have lived in the area for many a year and know our way around well so we are on hand to help you make the most of your stay. Between us we speak 5 languages including of course English and French so any assistance you may need with the lingo is freely available. We love it here, so come and share the experience!

Why Richard Borsey chose Arces

After more than 10 years in the Charente Maritime we chose what we considered the best location - on the edge of a typical Charantaise village but only 10 minutes from the sea and some life!

We made the "mad" decision to buy a dilapidated 18th century farmhouse and to create a special home and work place.

After 2 years of dust and toil the project has borne fruit - a mix of traditional and contemporary design elements - the solidity of local stone work and beams with the addition of space and light. A spacious and airy house and gite and a garden dotted with productive fruit trees. You get the picture - we like it a lot!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Arces is a rare find - a quiet country village but very close to the beaches and holiday towns. Our property was also a rare find as properties to renovate (which haven't already been spoilt) are becoming more difficult to locate. We were able to keep many of the charming original features whilst giving the place a comtemporary feel at the same time. OK - Grand Designs pitch is over . . .

Notes on accommodation: The house was built around 1790 and was a family home and working farm until 2010 when we bought the house. We have undertaken a complete and sensitive restoration retaining as many of the original features as possible - stone fireplaces, oak and poplar beams, stone walls - whilst incorporating a more contemporary open feel with plenty of light. The original farmhouse has become the gite; the barns and former farm buildings have been converted into our living space. The whole is in the form of a Z providing seclusion for the guest accommodation whilst we remain on hand to help you make the most of your stay. Outside: Chez Sampo has gardens of a third of an acre or so set mostly to lawn with many fruit trees (for shade and fruit too). There is a wooden terraced area for sunny breakfasts or simply relaxing. The garden opens onto open fields

Top quality and personal service

There are gites to rent which are owned by absentee landlords, and little details get overlooked by the cleaners who are paid do the routine maintenance. That is not the case here at Chez Sampo. The owners are on the spot and take care that every little thing is correct when visitors arrive. The house was spotless when we arriv d and perfect in every way. Every single thing that a visitor might want has been thought of and was there in its place and ready.

Richard and Viki are on hand next door to answer questions and deal with problems if they arise, but they are discreet, not obtrusive in any way, and the visitor who wants total privacy can have it. We were of the opposite persuasion and enjoyed their company, their friendship and their hospitality. Visitors can have it either way.

We were blessed with a week of glorious weather, so we went to all the places up and down the coast that we wanted to visit, had lunch somewhere every day from Mortagne in the south up to La Palmyre in the north, and came back every afternoon to spend a few hours in the lovely garden, choosing which tree to sit beneath, and whether we should pick and nibble the raspberries or wild strawberries. Delightful.

So thank you, Richard and Viki, we had a very enjoyable week, even though the younger generations weren't able to join us. We are pleased to recommend your house to anyone else who reads this report, and when we play the CD of your music we think of you.

Return to Arces

We had a holiday home here in Arces for 18yrs and sold it 6yrs ago with great sorrow.This was a trip down memory lane and what better place to start but in the old Monsieur Bruno's House now totally renovated & converted into a wonderful Gite or B&B. As there was only my wife and me we chose the B&B option which on this occasion gave us the whole Gite as we are out of season. The property has been modernised to a very high standard with all four bedrooms having ensuite facilities. The kitchen diner is large and has everything you need while the lounge is light and airy looking out onto the garden. We had a happy welcome and all the help needed plus the added benefit of Breakfast (Petite Dejeuner) this is a great Gite in a Lovely quiet spot with easy access to the beaches & Royan with some fine restaurants nearby. I would highly recommend Chez Sampo for a short break or holiday.

3 minutes in the car to the Gironde; 10 minutes to sandy beaches.


Airports at La Rochelle and Bordeaux - each about 1 hour away. St Malo 4-5 hours away.


We are on the edge of the villages of Arces with a boulangerie and restaurant. The market town of Cozes is 5 minutes away and has weekly market, supermarket, bank, pharmacy etc.

Chez Sampo is on the edge of the small village of Arces sur Gironde situated 4km inland from the historic port of Talmont. Here we benefit from the peace and tranquility of the countryside whilst remaining only 10 minutes from the sandy beaches at Meschers and only 20 minutes from the popular seaside town of Royan.

Arces is famed for its 11th Century church and the best boulangerie in the area and is otherwise a quiet farming village supplemented by a small but thriving artist community. The market town of Cozes is just 4km away and has a supermarket, weekly street market and a good range of shops. Restaurants are to be found in Arces, Talmont, Cozes, Meschers and just about everywhere else too!

Apart from the nearby coastal attractions, Bordeaux, La Rochelle (both served by low cost flights from the UK) and Cognac are each only about an hour away and we are within easy reach of St Emilion and the chateaus of the Medoc. There is no shortage of things to see and do
