About Roma Oxley Green

My husband and I live in London but our heart is in our second home in France .We love the tranquility and the french way of life and hope to spend more and more time in France as we get older ..We spend as much of the summer as we can in our house which is in the same grounds as this cottage .

We love gardening ,cooking, having animals and looking for great vintage finds in the french vide -greniers (french car boot sales)

Roma Oxley Green purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Roma Oxley Green chose Manche

We originally set out to find a holiday home in Normandy in 2009 after a lovely summer in France .We were fortunate to find La Bessardiere a small hamlet in St Maur des Bois .The cottage dates back to 1759 .To the north of the property are our English neighbours who initially renovated the cottage to the south but off set is our own holiday cottage .

The view from the south terrace is directly onto open fields and pasture land. The grounds are shared with ourselves but hedging provides privacy .

We love this place because its so easy to get to from the UK ,especially on the ferry from Caen or Cherbourg ,it works for weekends as well longer trips. It of course works for those coming from France or nearby European countries. The area is peaceful and very rural .There is so much to do and much to explore from the lovely french markets and antique markets to great beaches, country walks, cycling on country lanes and of course the history of the area.We can provide secure storage for cycles on request .

What makes this cottage unique

La Bessardiere is at the end of a country lane so there is no through traffic, thus making it a safe environment for families and children.

Set an acre of countryside, where you may see a red squirrel , or watch the kestrels and buzzards soaring overhead.

Whilst set in the quiet of the countryside; the town of Villedieu les Poeles is just a few minutes drive away, for supermarkets , local shops and a weekly market

The sandy beaches of the west Normandy coast are a short drive away. The port of Granville is great for seafood and boat trips .Bayeux and the normandy landing beaches are about 40minutes away. The amazing Mont St Michel is 50minutes by car .For those who like sports there's canoeing and mountaineering in the Swiss Normand area. There is excellent cycling and many cycle routes in the area .

Ideal place for total relaxation

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to this peaceful gite - the first time we have ever returned to a property in over 30 years of holidays in France, which must say something! The first few days were very hot, and it was lovely just to sit in the garden and read and snooze. After that we had some great days out - you can reach so many great places from this location.

We had a problem when the boiler failed, and Roma and Alistair sorted it out as quickly as it was possible to do, and even offered us their own bathroom for showering while it was being sorted.

Our grown up daughters stayed with us for a week - as they did before, and were planning a return visit while they were still there!

It has it's quirks, as you would expect from an older building with character; it was clean and comfortable, has pretty much most things you could need, is in a lovely location, and the owners are very friendly and helpful - what's not to like?

We may yet be back again!

A beautiful cottage set in lovely rural surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week. Weather was fantastic and the gardens were ideal for relaxing in. The cottage is very comfortable and has everything you might need. Visited Lake Dathée several mornings to give our dogs a good walk (about 4 miles around the lake). Stunning views all the way round. Walked to the nearby village for a beer several times (about 3 miles there and back). A very relaxing holiday.

Private Seasonal Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful little property far enough away from it all to be quiet and cosy in front of the log burner, but close enough to receive UK Tv (if you want it) and other properties and amenities when they are needed.

An enchanting little property and well equipped, there is little that comes to mind to find fault with it, certainly for the two of us that travelled it was a perfect location for much needed down time.

About 5-8 mins from Villedieu which is a very typical, pleasant and friendly Normandy town its also well located for other sight seeing opportunities in the area (Mont ST Michel, St Lo, Bayeux etc).

Travelling down from Caen, was a doddle as would be from St Malo.

Definitely looking forwards to a return visit already........

Idyllic retreat in the Normandy countryside

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with La Bessardiere before we had even opened the cottage door; beautiful garden and orchard with views of rolling tree-clad hills - just like our very own Yorkshire, but with warmth and sunshine!

The cottage is tastefully and comfortably furnished by Roma and Alistair, so much so that we enjoyed staying around the house and garden as much as visiting the nearby sights. Villedieu is typically French without the disadvantages of some of the larger towns such as heavy traffic; it has several good eating places, an excellent visitor/information centre with helpful staff, and no less than three small museums, each worth a visit. Hambye Abbey a few miles away is a must-see, and Mont St Michel, and Granville, are each an easy day trip.

Would certainly love to return, and next time perhaps the weather will actually be cool enough to light the stove, which will be the ultimate cosy experience!

Ideal Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is well maintained and very comfortable. Everything is as described. The garden is a lovely place in the afternoon sun and very quiet. There are no problems with access or parking. The wood burner provides plenty of warmth on cool evenings. Villedieu is only a short drive away and is one of the best towns in the area. We particularly enjoyed visiting St Lo, Avranches, Granville and Coutances. Mont St Michel is not far away and the coast between Avranches and Coutances offers a variety of coastal villages and quiet beaches. If you have bikes, directly to the east of the cottage there is a large network of lanes marked with cycling routes.

I would recommend this cottage.

Coast/Beach:

The sandy beaches of the west coast, Le Mont St Michel; Granville; Jullouville, etc; are within an easy drive.

The WW2 landing beaches on the north coast, together with Bayeux and Caen, are all around an hour's drive from the cottage.

Travel:

We are about 1 hours drive from the Channel Port at Caen/Ouistreham; 1.5 hours from Cherbourg or St Malo. Around 4 hours; all motorway, from the eastern Channel ports at Calais/Boulogne; and also the Channel Tunnel. The motorways here are much less crowded than those in the UK and many of our visitors take advantage of the cheaper crossings available from Dover to Calais and the other eastern UK ports; and the Channel Tunnel. Dinard airport is around 1.5 hours away.

A car is essential.

Distances:

There is a bar and a restaurant, and also a bakers and a village shop in the local villages, around 5 mins drive away.

The nearest town is Villedieu le Poeles around 10 mins drive; for supermarkets etc.

Further Details:

Villedieu is a lively tourist town, much of which retains its medieval appearance, especially in its back streets, where old courtyards can still be found behind wooden gates. The town is a centre for metal-working and the shops are full of copper souvenirs & kitchenware. There is also a Historic working Bell foundry to visit.

The area is an ideal base for access to leisure activities and visits, both educational and historic. The list is endless with Mont-St-Michel, St.Malo, Bayeux, the Landing Beaches, Caen & many more ...

The Bay of Mont-St-Michel, surrounded by many attractive beaches, is close by. Towns to visit include the old town of Granville with Piracy connections. For the young, Jullouville is a must with cafes & bars, amusements and wide expanse of sandy beach.

You can also take a day trip to the Channel lsles, ferries from Granville & St Malo.

There are also trains direct from Villedieu station to Paris, perhaps for that romantic day away, mid-week?
