Detached 18C Stone Cottage, In A Rural Area, Sleeps 4 + Baby Ferry discount

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Cottage near Villedieu Les Poeles, Manche, Normandy, France - Ideal For Family Holidays And Short Breaks

La Bessardiere is a detached restored stone cottage, near St Maur des Bois. Built in 1759; set in 2.5acres of grounds. In a quiet location, yet within easy reach of the coast and many of Normandy's Historic sites. Ideal for family holiday but also provides a cosy base for out of Season breaks. If you just want to relax, there is a sunny south facing patio. Above, a small balcony overlooks the open countryside, a good place to greet the morning with your coffee or to view the wonderful array of stars that can be seen on a clear night. The cottage has many original features, such as large stone fire-place incorporating a log burner. On the first floor, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom with shower, bidet, basin & wc. Downstairs there is a lobby with separate cloakroom; a light open plan living area and a fully fitted kitchen. We have decided not to install wifi yet in keeping with the tranquility of the cottage however there is 3G available and several cafes with free wifi in Villedieu.

About the Owner

My husband and I live in London with our 3 teenagers but our heart is in our second home in France .We love the tranquility and the french way of life and hope to spend more and more time in France as we get older ..We spend as much of the summer as we can in our house which is in the same grounds as this cottage .

We love gardening ,cooking, having animals and looking for great vintage finds in the french vide -greniers (french car boot sales)

Ideal Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is well maintained and very comfortable. Everything is as described. The garden is a lovely place in the afternoon sun and very quiet. There are no problems with access or parking. The wood burner provides plenty of warmth on cool evenings. Villedieu is only a short drive away and is one of the best towns in the area. We particularly enjoyed visiting St Lo, Avranches, Granville and Coutances. Mont St Michel is not far away and the coast between Avranches and Coutances offers a variety of coastal villages and quiet beaches. If you have bikes, directly to the east of the cottage there is a large network of lanes marked with cycling routes.

I would recommend this cottage.

Sunny spot in bucolic surroundings

  • 5 of 5

This 2 bedroom Normandy farmhouse is delightful inside and out. The flying buttresses mark the fact it's actually half a house, and the stones surrounding the large fireplace come from older buildings, giving the gite tons of character. Well equipped, comfortable, clean, with a newly fitted kitchen, outside there's plenty of space to lounge and barbecue. Plenty to do within driving distance- our first taste of Normandy makes us want to return. Ask the owner if she'll share some of her pickled turnips.

Owner's Response: Dear Barbara Im so glad you found our little place comfortable and well equiped , we put in the new kitchen last year and think it improves the the functioning of the kitchen as well as up dating the cottage generally. Regarding pickles , they are a cold pickle so last only 2-3 weeks Im so glad you enjoyed them and hope to supply you with more (if seasonal)on your return trip !

Peaceful, relaxed and rustic setting

  • 5 of 5

The house had everything we needed for a family holiday and more. Loved our quiet mornings drinking coffee outside and evening BBQ watching the animals. Local village had a great food market and the local beaches were beautiful. Will definitely go back next year.

Beautiful setting in Lower Normandy with welcoming and friendly owners

  • 4 of 5

We arrived at the property and felt instantly relaxed. Our dog Hugo made himself at home right away with a run around the large dog-friendly grounds.

The cottage had everything we needed, including English TV for those lazy nights in front of the fire. The bed in the master was a little on the small side for us, as we are used to a super king at home with my partner being 6'4, but other than that, the property was very comfortable.

Roma & Alistair were very friendly and accommodating - we asked to move the garden furniture out onto the lawn as we were blessed with a bright and sunny week and wanted to indulge with some local cider.

We visited the local market in Villedieu which was fun, trying out the local lingo. We bought live crab which we had never cooked before. Roma & Alistair had a seafood cookery book and a huge pan for us to use to cook the crab outside on the BBQ.

The cottage has beautiful grounds with an orchard and they also have a vegetable garden and were nice enough to give us some spuds, lettuce and courgettes for our onward journey.

Villedieu has everything you might need in terms of provisions with supermarkets, butchers, bakers, restaurants and bars etc and is only a few minutes away by car.

We had a lovely time at the cottage and would recommend to couples or families (although the stairs are very steep so not suitable for elderly people really).

There is no wi-fi at the cottage, but it was actually nice to be disconnected from the world for a few days! Plus, there are bars / restaurants in Villedieu where you can get free wi-fi if you buy something.

Hope you enjoy your stay with Roma & Alistair as much as we did!!!

Perfect, rural base to explore Normandy

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage as it was a great location to explore Normandy and all that it offered. Both Roma and Alistair were very accommodating when it came to arranging a highchair/stairgate etc for our 20 month old daughter. A particular highlight was the large garden which allowed our daughter to enjoy her freedom running around and exploring. The cottage as a whole was very well equipped and felt cosy and homely. All in all a peaceful retreat and we would be keen to visit again.

From the Owner

We originally set out to find a holiday home in Normandy in 2009 after a lovely summer in France .We were fortunate to find La Bessardiere a small hamlet in St Maur des Bois .The cottage dates back to 1759 .To the north of the property are our English neighbours who initially renovated the cottage to the south but off set is our cottage that we holiday in when we can. The view from the south terrace is directly onto open fields and pasture land. The grounds are shared with ourselves but hedging provides privacy . We love this place because its so easy to get to ,especially on the ferry from Caen or Cherbourg ,it works for weekends as well longer trips. The area is peaceful and very rural .There is so much to do and much to explore from the lovely french markets and antique markets to great beaches, country walks, cycling on country lanes and of course the history of the area.We can provide secure storage for cycles on request .

Nearest Airport : Carpiquet at 79 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : St Cecile at 1 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Caen Ouistriham at 100 Kilometres Nearest Train : Villedieu les Poeles at 6 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Villedieu les Poeles at 6 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Julouville at 35 Kilometres Car: necessary

The sandy beaches of the west coast, Le Mont St Michel; Granville; Jullouville, etc; are within an easy drive.

The WW2 landing beaches on the north coast, together with Bayeux and Caen, are all around an hour's drive from the cottage.

We are about 1 hours drive from the Channel Port at Caen/Ouistreham; 1.5 hours from Cherbourg or St Malo. Around 4 hours; all motorway, from the eastern Channel ports at Calais/Boulogne; and also the Channel Tunnel. The motorways here are much less crowded than those in the UK and many of our visitors take advantage of the cheaper crossings available from Dover to Calais and the other eastern UK ports; and the Channel Tunnel. Dinard airport is around 1.5 hours away.

A car is essential.

There is a bar and a restaurant, and also a bakers and a village shop in the local villages, around 5 mins drive away.

The nearest town is Villedieu le Poeles around 10 mins drive; for supermarkets etc.

Further Details:

Villedieu is a lively tourist town, much of which retains its medieval appearance, especially in its back streets, where old courtyards can still be found behind wooden gates. The town is a centre for metal-working and the shops are full of copper souvenirs & kitchenware. There is also a Historic working Bell foundry to visit.

The area is an ideal base for access to leisure activities and visits, both educational and historic. The list is endless with Mont-St-Michel, St.Malo, Bayeux, the Landing Beaches, Caen & many more ...

The Bay of Mont-St-Michel, surrounded by many attractive beaches, is close by. Towns to visit include the old town of Granville with Piracy connections. For the young, Jullouville is a must with cafes & bars, amusements and wide expanse of sandy beach.

You can also take a day trip to the Channel lsles, ferries from Granville & St Malo.

There are also trains direct from Villedieu station to Paris, perhaps for that romantic day away, mid-week?

From the Owner

La Bessardiere is at the end of a country lane so there is no through traffic, thus making it a safe environment for families and children. Set in 2.5 acres with a tributary of the River Sienne passing through the valley, where you may see deer, or watch the kestrels and buzzards soaring overhead. Whilst set in the quiet of the countryside; the town of Villedieu les Poeles is just a few minutes drive away, for supermarkets , local shops and a weekly market The sandy beaches of the west Normandy coast are a short drive away. The port of Granville is great for seafood and boat trips .Bayeux and the normandy landing beaches are about 40minutes away. The amazing Mont St Michel is 50minutes by car .For those who like sports there's canoeing and mountaineering in the Swiss Normand area. There is excellent cycling and many cycle routes in the area .
