About the Owner

We are Nick and Richenda Hine, the owners of The Dinas Arms. We have been coming to Pembrokeshire since the mid-90s when we bought The Dinas Arms. Richenda is Welsh and mighty patriotic! We both have a passion for the area and have taken great pride in seeing Pembrokeshire develop into such an amazing destination over the last 20 years. The plethora of restaurants, galleries, great foodie shops and things to do in the area have increased 10-fold. It's great to see that Pembrokeshire really is the "New Cornwall" (but better, of course...). We have been letting the Dinas Arms since 1996, but for the last few years we have kept the house just for family, only starting to re-let with Owners Direct in August of 2012.

Comfortable, welcoming old inn

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Dinas Arms for its location in Fishguard Lower Town's lovely harbour, for its high levels of equipment, but especially for its spaciousness and relaxed atmosphere. Value for money very good, especially out of season.

The housekeeper was very helpful, the house was clean on arrival and we would highly recommend it to anyone liking spectacular coast walks, surfing beaches, history and much more. It's a region that for us outshines Devon and Cornwall.

My self and 6 friends had the pleasure of staying at this lovely property. Really lovely home from home, couldn't think of any thing that wasn't provided to make the stay so enjoyable. 7 females 6having there own rooms 2sharing a very comfortable family room, with double and single bed. Beds were extremely clean and comfortable, as was the rest of the property. We were lucky with the weather, rain after 8dry all day, sunshine all day Sunday. We were I must say having a very relaxed break, walked along the harbour and coast path, relaxed in the garden didn't drive from parking on Friday eve, total relax. Spent the evening chatting to locals and holiday makers on the harbour wall. Really loved our stay. Thank you Nick and richenda. X

Owner's Response: We are so delighted that you enjoyed your stay at the Dinas Arms, we try to provide as much as we can to make your stay comfortable, so it is wonderful to have your feedback on that. We have done lots of refurbishments recently so it is great to hear that your stay was enjoyable. We will pass on your comments about the house being clean and tidy to Cathy and her housekeeping team, they will be chuffed as they take real pride in their work! We love Lower Town - everybody is so friendly and it is great to have a chat on the harbour - we love sitting on the benches looking at the view and chatting to folks. Thank you again for your positive comments and taking the time to write. Nick and Richenda Hine.

Excellent comfortable family home

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Dinas Arms in Fishgaurd with parents from my son's French rugby club. It was a full house of mostly rugby dads and a few brave mums. The house and the location were great. We especially enjoyed being able to host the coaches and parents from the Welsh team we were visiting, taking advantage of the huge dining room table. We also enjoyed barbecuing local lobster:)

Good house for large groups with children

  • 4 of 5

This is a large, well laid out house which worked really well for our three-family group. It is not the most modern or luxurious property, but it was clean, comfortable and it had everything we needed - a good sized kitchen well stocked with utensils, a decent tv, very good wifi etc. There are several different living spaces, so we were not on top of one another all the time, a small but useful outside area, and a secure outbuilding to store bikes, surfboards etc. We had a couple of minor issues which we raised with the owners on our return, and they replied very promptly and positively.

The location was excellent - although there is no walkable beach, the children could swim off the quay in the calm waters of the harbour, and crabbing off the harbour wall entertained them for hours. There is also a small childrens' playground opposite.

Lower Fishguard is a pretty little place, a short walk (up a steep hill) from Fishguard itself, which has a few decent shops and a smallish supermarket. Newport beach is a short drive away and is pretty decent. There is a brilliant indoor trampolining centre (Hangar 5) at Haverfordwest, really good walks on the coast path, and most of our group also spent a day coasteering (highly recommended). We will be returning next year.

Location

From the Owner

We bought the house way back in 1996 after falling in love with Lower Town which we thought was the most beautiful place (it is one of the most photographed harbours in the UK). The poor old Dinas Arms had fallen on hard times and was standing derelict as the former fisherman's inn of the village. We could not believe that such a big house in the centre of the famous village (rumour has it that Richard Burton drank here during the filming of Under Milkwood...) was standing empty as such an eysore and acted fast! We took pity on the old hulk and with the help of some great local builders we sympathetically transformed the house with love, care and attention into a warm and cosy home from home. Of course the house has been updated and refurbished subsequently to keep it up to date – most recently in June 2015 we have refurbished both the twin room & double room ensuites, which now boast travertine tiling with modern showers, W/C, heated towel rails and sinks.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Cardiff at 100 Miles Nearest Barpub : The Ship Inn at 25 Metres Nearest Ferry : Goodwick at 1.5 Miles Nearest Golf : Newport at 6 Miles Nearest Train : Goodwick at 1.5 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Fishguard at 0.5 Miles Nearest Beach : Goodwick/ Lower Town Quayside has a small beach at 1.5 Kilometres

Coast/Beach:

The property is located on Lower Town Quayside which has a small beach at low tide, nearby are beautiful safe coves and the beach at Goodwick (2 miles). Newport is 6 miles away with its fantastic large sandy beach.

The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path runs from the village and allows 188 miles of National Park walking. Further away are surfing beaches Whitesands (20 mins) and Newgale (30 mins). There are regular buses which leave from the village (timetable pictured).

Travel:

Car would be ideal, however, there is an excellent local bus service to all the main beaches which leaves from just by the house (timetable to view with extra images on this site). There is also a train station (direct to London etc) & ferry port located in Goodwick (1 mile) which travels to Ireland daily. Cardiff airport is 100 miles (approx) from the property.

Distances:

Access is very good, with excellent rail and road links to Fishguard. Access from London and the Midlands by train is easy on the direct route. By car, the M4 and dual carriageway ends only 45 minutes from Fishguard itself and the Severn Bridge is around 2 to 2.5 hours away. The ferry is located in Fishguard, 1 mile.

The nearest train station Fishguard Harbour, 1 Miles. Several restaurants in Fishguard, 1/2 mile. Nearest pub, 50 metres. Nearest small beach is 200 metres walking distance.

Further Details:

Pembrokshire has rightly been chosen by National Geographic Traveller as the second best coastal destination in the world. With mile upon glorious mile of walks on beaches, along clifftops and through woodland, Pembrokeshire is a destination not to be missed. It is fast becoming a 'must see' destination, being the recentlocation for films such as 'Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows' and 'Snow White and the Huntsmen'. The area is steeped in history–did you know the Bluestones used for Stonehenge originate from the Preseli Hills - only 5 miles inland from The Dinas Arms?)You are never more than 10 miles from the sea in Pembrokeshire and never more so than at the Dinas Arms which is only 50 yards from the quayside in Lower Town. The quaint Ship Inn in just yards away is lovely for an evening drink with friends, while Fishguard offers all usual amenities such as takeaways, pubs and craft shops, and there are some excellent restaurants and pubs locally.

There's plenty to do: Horse riding, mountain biking, paint balling, rock climbing, go karting, Zorbing and quad biking are catered for close by.

Regular boat trips to the numerous offshore islands and bird sanctuaries are available all year round. Boat charter is available as is both sea and freshwater fishing. Water sports are a must, with Newport a Mecca for sailing, surfing and wind surfing whilst Whitesands and Newgale, on the way to St Davids, are world famous for excellent surfing.Resorts such as Tenby, St Davids and Cardigan are lovely for a day out and have lots of activities for children, while inland offers an idyllic rural setting for relaxation and walking.

Haverfordwest (10 minutes drive) is a large shopping centre with Tesco etc. Fishguard itself has excellent food shopping, with a Saturday Farmer’s Market also offering the very best of local produce. We provide an “information table” at the house.

All this and more is why The Dinas Arms has been the setting for our family holidays since 1996.

Facilities

From the Owner

A great feature is the large storage area off the kitchen which has outside access, great for storing outward bound equipment. Richenda has a keen interest in interior design and antiques, so we hope you will agree that this is reflected in the decor of the house. She's a keen cook, so the kitchen is well equipped, whist Nick makes sure that the original bar feature of the Dinas Arms which is still functioning is fully stocked with glasses and vintage pub finds. We're sure you will like playing 'barman' with the old optics as much as our friends and family have over the years. But if that is not your scene, rest assured that there are lots of books and DVD's to keep guests occupied. A complimentary bottle of wine and flowers on arrival & handsoap in all bathrooms are provided for guests. Additionally, for Christmas bookings, we provide a fully decorated Christmas tree to add to the festivities.

There are limited views of the quayside from this area. Guests should be advised that the property is situated next to a road, so this should be considered. We can give more information on this if required. There is a great supply of body boards, buckets and spades and crab lines at the house for guests to enjoy, along with a cool pack for beach excursions. There is a playground close to the house for children to enjoy, whilst grown ups will love the nearby Ship Inn - probably one of the most friendly former fisherman's pubs in the whole of Wales, like stepping back in time. Great walks from the house - riverside, woods or sea, take your pick! Utility Room: Steps from the kitchen lead to drying/ boot room for coats, wellies etc. This leads into a large outhouse/ storeroom (the legendary setting for a supposed bare knuckle boxing match!), ideal for storing surfboards, canoes, bikes & drying dogs etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Housekeeping service: The house is fully cleaned & beds made up on arrival.
