About Mr John Munk

We live and work in Bristol and have busy city lives. We have a teenage daughter and two sons whom no longer live at home. We sold a bolt hole in France to invest in our 'little bit of heaven', in Cornwall, April Cottage!!

When we saw the cottage we knew it would suit everyone for what they wanted from a break from work or home, different from the cottage in France! We spend as much time as possible at April Cottage and find we relax as soon as we arrive and book our favourite fish restaurant, where you choose from the catch of that day with hunks of fresh soft bread to soak up the juices!

We spend hours sitting on the terrace soaking up the views and the activity around the harbour. We also have a house in Slovenia, that is absolutely brilliant for Family summer and winter holidays; if you are interested, do call me or visit "think Slovenia" click onto Mountains and Lakes, then" Gorska Hisa. You will find all you need to know about the property and location.

Mr John Munk purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Mr John Munk chose Falmouth

We had been searching for a property but none had the magic of April Cottage. We were transfixed by the views of boats bobbing in the water, the harbour and the little ferries as they hurried in all directions to a vast array of destinations. The steps down to the property afforded privacy and peace to enjoy the views without interruption. We loved the cottage and knew we could make improvements to make it a perfect relaxing, get away destination.

We thought the cottage offered tranquillity away from the road and yet it is a stones throw from the cobbled High Street of Falmouth with its' limited traffic and numerous little shops, bars, restaurants, art galleries, and festival events in Millennium square, especially, for my teenage daughter who enjoys her independence around the town.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy sitting with a glass of wine and having a barbecue on the front terrace soaking up the views until it is dark and the lights twinkle on the water from the harbour and village of Flushing across the estuary. And none of those muddy estuaries to look out on when the tide is out!! During the summer, at least twice a week, you can watch sailing races right in front of the cottage; very colourful.

We like being able to park our car and then take little ferries/boats/buses/trains to a vast array of different destinations including, St Mawes on the Roseland Penninsular, known for its' beauty, Truro, the beautiful Georgian city, Smugglers Cove, picturesque pubs up the Helford River, local sandy beaches, safer and smaller with the beach cafés serving delicious food or, across to the larger rugged and dramatic north coast surfing beaches.

It's the cosiness of the fires during those winter months after an invigorating beach walk & picnics till late in summer at the beach.

Another Perfect Visit

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to April Cottage. We were there last September and liked it so much we decided to stay again in the spring. Although the weather was supposed to be cold and rainy for most of our trip, we lucked out and had beautiful weather most days. The house is so comfortable and the view so enjoyable, we didn't mind staying home the one day it rained. The house is perfectly located for enjoying Falmouth without a car. The owner, John Munk, is wonderfully responsive and accommodating. This time we were both struck by the sounds of the songbirds and gulls. There's a Tesco food store a short walk away. We typically eat a nice lunch out, but then tuck in for the night before cocktails and dinner and cook at the house. Worked perfectly once again. We hope to return next spring.

Excellent well equipped cottage in a superb location

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as described on the HomeAway site and the views from the cottage were tremendous.

The property was very well equipped and had everything that could be needed. We effectively used it as a bed and breakfast being out all day and eating in Falmouth in the evenings.

There are a number of steps (about 12) from the road level to the cottage entrance level and these were difficult for the eldest of our party although we managed. Parking was easy but not close to the cottage (perhaps 200 to 300 yards away).

Having said that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the property without hesitation particularly for a family with young children.

The information provided before our departure was detailed and very accurate, the and John and Deborah Munk, the owners, are to be congratulated on making such a nice property available.

April Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This has to be the best holiday home we have stayed in. Very well equipped and comfortable. A home from home. The parking was not great, only once did we manage to park near to the property, however the stunning view from the cottage window and the close proximity to all the shops and restaurants in Falmouth far outweighed the parking issue. Plus it didn't hurt to walk a bit. Will definitely return for another holiday.

Owner's Response: Hi Susan Thank you so much for your kind words. We are really pleased that you like the cottage; we strive to make sure that it is somewhere people feel comfortable and at home. I do accept that parking is sometimes an issue, but as you say, it's a small price to pay for the location. Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you again. Regards John

FANTASTIC COTTAGE, BEAUTIFUL SETTING

  • 5 of 5

Our 2nd visit to this very "home from home" cottage. We had a lovely week. The cottage is very well thought out with everything you could possibly need and tastefully decorated, very comfortable. The views from the terrace patio are just wonderful, so relaxing, so interesting, we never tire of it! Love waking up and watching the sun rise over the water. Falmouth is a lovely little town, quite querky and full of great places to eat. It is amazing how close the cottage is situated to the town's high street as it's so quiet and peaceful in the cottage or on the terrace. There are so many wonderful places to visit within an hour's drive and the coastline is stunning! Highly recommended, thank you so much!

Perfect vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully appointed, well laid out cottage in perfect location. Quiet and private. We were mesmerized by the views of the harbor from sunrise to bedtime, rain or shine. Great kitchen. Plenty of books and games. We never used our car the entire week but instead walked down the hill to restaurants, shops, two good grocery stores, the Maritime Museum, and the the Prince of Wales pier, from which we took day trips to Truro, the Helford River, and St Mawes. From St Mawes we took the bus to the church at St Just-in-Roseland. This place is a real gem. We hope to return next spring.

Owner's Response: Hi Tim Again, thank you for your great comments. It seems that all of our guests get something different from staying at the cottage, be it the terrace, and views; to proximity to the town, or the ferries, and the pubs and restaurants. I am glad that there seems to be something for everyone. Thank you for booking the cottage, and I look forward to your next visit. Many thanks John

All home comforts

  • 5 of 5

A week in Cornwall seeing all the sights was planned for some time together with my brother and sister in law. Given the unpredictability of Cornish weather, a good home base was required for the four of us. April Cottage delivered on all fronts for us. So comfortable, well equipped and with stunning views, we couldn't ask for more. The only slight drawback is parking, but if you accept that parking anywhere is problematic in Cornwall, it was really no big deal. A wonderful week, a great choice.

Owner's Response: Thank you Carol, for your lovely comments, and good to know that we are doing the right things with the cottage. I agree with your comments re the parking, but it is rarely a significant problem. The benefits, in my view, far outweigh any inconvenience. I'm sure you will agree. Thanks again Regards John

Coast/Beach:

The coastline around the Cornish coast is said to be one of the most beautiful. We have several sandy beaches the first within a 5 min drive, called Gyllinvase which also boasts an excellent café/restaurant. The next local beach is Swanpool, about a ten minute drive, and this too has a small café. The next beach is at Maenporth. Again this is sandy and is a 15 min drive. The restaurant, Indaba is situated up on rocks above the beach and serves excellent food. This coast has smaller safer bays.

Travel:

Use of a car in Falmouth is not essential due to our close proximity to the centre and the excellent transport links to so many local places, especially by boat. Newquay is the closest airport, on the north Cornish coast. Exeter, 100 miles away, is the closest international airport. Plymouth cross channel port is 60 miles from Falmouth by road. There are excellent train links from London Paddington to Truro, with a links to Plymouth and Exeter. Falmouth has its own local railway station.

Distances:

Falmouth is well situated and has an excellent public transport network allowing guests to travel around Cornwall very easily. Flushing, the village seen opposite April Cottage is easily accessed in a few minutes by a regular little ferry, as is St Mawes, Truro, Smugglers Cove, The Helford Passage. St Ives, Truro and many other places are accessed also by bus and/or train. The Eden Project is about 40 mins drive. Other north coast surfing beaches are only 25 mins drive away.

Further Details:

Falmouth is a thriving community with a wide selection of pubs, restaurants, cafés, banks and supermarkets within easy walking distance. Falmouth boasts many art galleries, museums, swimming pool, boat trips, beaches and other places of interest and all within a short distance.
