About the property

We are a working Organic Farm in a stunning location deep in the Avon Valley near Kingsbridge. There are lovely walks through the valley and there is the River Avon to enjoy a barbecue by our little beach, paddle, or watch the trout rise. The houses are set comfortably apart, and are set in 80 acres of lush unspoilt pasture and ancient woodland, with 1/2 mile of the river Avon running through it. A key feature of our location is that you can stay at home in the rural idyll described above, or use it as a base for you to explore the beautiful beaches, scenery and picturesque towns of the South Hams. For those wanting benefits of city life, Exeter and Plymouth are both within 45 minutes easy drive. The wilds of Dartmoor are a mere twenty minutes by car.

About Steve and Shirley Bradley

We have been very privileged to have lived in this beautiful Devon river valley for about 25 years. We have managed to raise 5 daughters in this time without contemplating serious self harm- which we consider quite an achievement! Crannacombe is the home of a long established herd of South Devon cows and their calves. We also established Heron Valley organic Cider and Apple Juices on the farm to utilize the apple orchards here. We are lucky that all our girls share our love of this area- so much so that they have remained either in this valley or very close by. We love this location, we are within easy reach of myriad stunning and unspoiled beaches, beautiful country and coastal walks and interesting towns and pretty villages, e.g. Salcombe, Dartmouth, Totnes and Hope Cove.

Steve and Shirley Bradley purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Steve and Shirley Bradley chose South Hams

We stumbled across this farm, in a hidden valley, on a hot summers day while delivering cider to customers in Salcombe. It was empty for two years having been part of a country estate which seemed from another era. We wandered down through the meadows and sat on the river bank watching the fish jump in the dappled sunlight and thought what a beautiful and unspoiled place to live. Years later it is still the same but we have now appreciated that we also have a perfect peaceful base for enjoying the area but also on a rainy day in winter when the beach doesn't beckon we are 35-40 minutes drive of civilization in Exeter, Plymouth or Torquay or our local towns of Kingsbridge Totnes, Dartmouth and Salcombe. Great places to eat out, an abundance of local food producers, a foodie heaven!

What makes this cottage unique

Staying at Crannacombe gives you an ideal base for exploring all the lovely river valleys, beaches and the stunning unspoilt landscape of the beautiful South Hams. But you can also remain here, lazing by the river, wandering round the farmland or visiting the cider company and the South Devon Chilli Farm that are in our little lane. There are footpaths by which you can stroll down the valley through ancient woodlands. If you want to go further afield we are a modest drive from the lovely South Devon Coastal Path, also from the wild landscape of Dartmoor. You can learn to surf at Bantham, sail at Salcombe or take one of the many sea fishing trips offered locally. There are some beautiful National Trust gardens and houses which are within 30 minutes drive, eg; Overbecks & Collaton Fishacre.

Fantastic place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the cider barn. It had a beautiful view, very peaceful. The walk to the river was nice. Plenty of room in the house for all 7 of us. For once we had no bathroom queues, 4 bathrooms worked really well. Barn has lots of character. Fully equipped with everything we needed. We appreciated the tea tray and apple juice that they produce, which greated us on arrival, a lovely touch. Shirley and Steve were very helpful and friendly.

It was a good base to explore South Devon. It is quite central to lots of places. Blackpool Sands, Brantham beach, Paignton and the steam railway recommended. We were surprised how quickly you can get to places like Torquay and Plymouth.

We really enjoyed our week, even a bit of rain didn't stop us doing anything.

Een heerlijk familiehuis in de South Hams

  • 4 of 5

Lovely property in beautiful rural location

  • 5 of 5

This is a very comfortable property, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We were 3 generations of a family and it suited us perfectly, especially as each bedroom had acces to its own bath/shower room.

The Kitchen and dining area was very well equipped with crockery, cutlery, glassess and a wide range of cooking utensils.

Steve and Shirley (the hosts) were wonderful, really concerned that our stay was perfect.

Great accomodation, great location, great people, perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Steve and Shirley are lovely hosts who are nearby should you ever need them.

The cider house is a fabulous place with everything thing you need.

Our bedrooms and ensuite were perfect, clean and bright.

Eating outside having a barbecue was superb.

Coffee in the morning outside on our bedroom courtyards under a large fig tree was a piece of heaven.

A brilliant place and lovely people.

Three Families share Hidden Valley Barn

  • 4 of 5

We had the Cider Barn, Shirley was there to greet us on our arrival, so friendly. All bedrooms good, my daughter did the allocation, I just paid. Lots of open space in the fields and by the river. The hand held shower in the bedroom off the living area could do with a wall bracket to hold it, not a major problem. Home made apple juice was a great success, made next door.

Weather was kind so the children had no problems.

Lots of walking areas, narrow road so watch out for the occasional car, SUV. Happy time had by all.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you all enjoyed your holiday , exploring the fields and the river and also had a good start as your daughter had managed to sort out the bedroom allocation very quickly! Also thank you for your mention of enjoying Heron Valley apple juice which is made at the farm, along with Cider and lots of other soft drinks. We would love to see you again if you decide to revisit the South Hams .

Smaller and tired from the impression given by Website Photos.

  • 3 of 5

Wonderful location but not pre-warned regarding the narrowness of the access lane.

Shower en-suites disappointingly very small.

The photos on the website are misleading and do not represent the current condition of the property.

A number of small issues added to the feeling of disappointment. One bath had the plug missing, the light in the lounge section was dangerous as it tripped the fuse box when touched, the dishwasher cutlery basket was broken, a saucepan handle and the cutlery drawer were unsafe and the outdoor seating at the front needed a significant clean before use.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you found some faults at the property, particularly as we are constantly updating the furnishings and decorations and trying to keep the accomodation looking fresh and well cared for. To address your complaints, We are afraid the narrow South Devon lanes, very common all over the South Hams, we can do nothing about ! Shower room size- we have found that many guests prefer a bathroom / shower for each individual bedroom as opposed to us building less but more large size facilities ,in the whole property.( see Review Elaine F) .Please note, there are no photos that could be misleading of these bath/ shower rooms on the website. The general property photos are not old so we are very disappointed you found them misleading. We have not been aware of any problem with the living room electrics but can say the trip is reassuringly very sensitive in the property and can be triggered , for instance,by a light bulb blowing or the bulb or shade being inadvertently knocked. We will investigate further to make sure there is no cause other than what we have just mentioned. The appliances are PAT tested every season ( in this case,2 weeks before your booking) and the whole electrical system has been tested at recommended intervals with up to date safety certificates issued. The cutlery drawer is part of the custom built kitchen units and we have never had an accident from its use. Because it is solid wood it is obviously heavier than an MDF built kitchen drawer to open and is securely fixed in the unit. We are sorry the cleaners missed a loose saucepan handle and a damaged dishwasher cutlery holder which should have been noticed. The missing bath plug you mentioned has already been replaced . The wooden picnic table at the front of the property is ,by its nature, hard to keep totally clean on a daily basis as it is under a pergola with wisteria and an apple tree .Also, to preserve guests privacy in this romantic walled garden we feel it might be invasive for us to come in every day to clean it.We hope there were no similar problems with the metal tables and chairs in the back courtyard ,being new this year . We are sad that you felt disappointed over some aspects of your stay as it is very important to us that guests enjoy their holiday. However, we are glad you found the setting wonderful and hope you overall enjoyed the holiday with your friends.
