About carolyn screech

My husband and I are both middle aged and our children have all married and left home over the past ten years and we were left rattling around in our large property with our also very large Leonburger dog who is hugely popular with guests staying in the cottage.

We decided this year that we should let the annexe cottage out for holiday let as we feel that guests who like animals and wildlife will love our Hooty owl cottage.

carolyn screech purchased this cottage in 1994

Why carolyn screech chose Saint Columb Major

We moved to our current location in 1994 where we extended our owl sanctuary and wildlife organization which has been operating now for 27 years. We live on the edge of a moorland which is Ideal for walkers and cyclists as we are situated on the Goss Moor Trail, an area of outstanding natural beauty and abundant wildlife.

What makes this cottage unique

Situated in mid Cornwall just off the main A30 and central to 4 major towns, Newquay, Truro, Bodmin and St Austell.

Newquay airport is 6 miles and St.Columb Road railway station 2 miles. Local village amenities 1.5 miles. Newquay beaches are only 8 miles away and 8 miles to the Eden Project.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Despite this being a new property available this year so far visitors have thouroughly enjoyed their stay with us and want to rebook again for next year. Very clean and extremely comfortable. Excellent facilities within the cottage and on site in the park and on site tearoom. Good value for money and very friendly property owners and staff within the park.

Fantastic cottage within the owl sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Hooty Owl cottage was fantastic. The cottage is immaculate with everything you could need for your stay, home from home including access to the sanctuary. Tom & Carolyn make sure you are well looked after & nothing is too much trouble. You are near to Newquay, Padstow & the usual hotspots but we chose to enjoy a week learning about the owls & the wonderful work that the sanctuary undertake. It is, for us a piece of heaven.

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was exactly as described and was clean and well equipped. We met the owner Carolyn on arrival and met Tom and their daughters during our stay.

The inclusive all day access to the Screech Owl sanctuary was great and enabled plenty of opportunities to take in the displays and talks by friendly and knowledgeable staff. We even had a 30 minute adventure with two cheeky meerkats as our "Meet the Furries" session.

The property has wifi, private parking and is centrally located with easy access to lots of other attractions (eg Charlestown, Newquay, Eden Project, Jamaica Inn etc).

Overall a unique and warming experience - would highly recommend and hope to stay again.

Outstanding experience

  • 5 of 5

We could only spend 5 days before flying back to Australia. A truly memorable experience to be able to visit the owls (don't forget the Kookaburra) at any time, day or night. Carolyn and her husband were helpful at the sanctuary and with imparting their local knowledge. They introduced us to a local wildlife artist, Dick Twinney, whose work is stunning. Cottage was immaculate, tastefully furnished and had everything we needed to be cosy and comfortable and Carolyn had supplied a snack for our arrival. All the staff at the Sanctuary were friendly, knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions. We learnt and handled many different varieties of owls and loved hearing their stories. There was absolutely nothing we could complain about! My grandchildren want to go there to experience the wildlife and play in the enormous playground. They also had a range of other animals, eg meerkats, goats, llamas, etc and we enjoyed helping with their feeding and talks about their habits.

Cozy cottage in owl sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks in this lovely cottage in Cornwall, part of an owl sanctuary. The hosts were superb - friendly, gracious and extremely accommodating. The cottage was fully equipped with linens and kitchen supplies. Furnishings were all attractive and comfortable, including the bed. A shared washing machine was very helpful to have on request. The accommodation alone was enough to recommend a stay here but the owls provided an additional incentive for the stay: a truly unique experience to enhance an exploration of Cornwall. Hiking trails right out the door also allowed easy access to the beautiful English countryside. This cottage is excellent for couples or small families; the owl sanctuary is an outstanding added feature for nature lovers of all ages. We highly recommend this accommodation and would certainly return on future visits to Cornwall, the best endorsement we can give.

Really comfy cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is situated within the owl sanctuary itself. We found it to be just like staying at home, especially while sleeping in the kingside bed. Our children loved staying within the owl sanctuary, and at the end of our week my son did not want to return home. If he could have lived there he would have.

Would recommend anyone who loves owls to visit as you get to see the owls at night and have unlimited access to the sanctuary day or night.

The owners are really friendly and cannot do enough for you.
