About Judith Dower

Joiner's Cottage belonged to my parents and was originally the joiner's shop. I inherited the cottage and have updated it over the years, to make it a comfy and homely cottage, perfect for Dales holidays.

Judith Dower purchased this cottage in 1949

Why Judith Dower chose Muker

There are many walks direct from the door, all amid the stunning landscape of Swaledale. The only crowds you'll find here are flocks of sheep and a few cows! Breathe in the invigorating air and admire the wonderful meadow flowers and stone barns and walls. Explore the single-track roads with amazing views overlooking the dale and relax with a pint of locally-brewed real ale at one of the cosy nearby pubs.

Swaledale visit

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely cottage and village for a week, the local area is very picturesque and accessible. We did plenty of walking and running , we also visited the famous and very quaint tan hill pub. The cottage offered very good facilities and comfortable, homely and had most things we needed to eat in. The Friday chip van was a massive hit and provided a great supper . In conclusion a very pleasant experience and wonderful surroundings , would definitely return to Swaledale .

Lovely cottage, warm, clean, beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at the cottage at the end of October. The cottage had everything that we needed, it was very clean and cosy and very warm, with open fires, wood and coal. The kitchen window overlooks the hills and out own flock of sheep. There is a pub nearby and many walks from the door (including onto the Pennine Way). In a quiet and beautiful location this was a really relaxing break. The beds are so comfortable, big bathroom with bath and shower, two small lounges both with TVs, nice kitchen. We spent our days running in the hills, hiking, sitting by the fire and eating both in and out (chip van delivers on Friday evening and is worth the wait!).

Spacious, comfortable and a great location away from it all

  • 4 of 5

Stockdale was a great base for our family of four with plenty of room combined with a fantastic location in the Yorkshire Dales. The property is obviously cleaned regularly and provided all the facilities we needed for our week away.

As a location Thwaite is a good base for the Dales. Don't feel that you need to pay for attractions here as the great outdoors is there for the children (including a public footpath 20 seconds walk away). There's a good walk around the waterfalls in the village of Keld which is two miles away. We also enjoyed a walk in Reeth so it's a good location if you don't want to spend loads of money on attractions.

We also spent a day on Ullwater Lake in the Lake District which took about an hour and a quarter to reach.
