About the Owner

My name is Ilsa Easson, journalist, painter and sculptor. Over 30 years ago I discovered on one of my trips Northern Cyprus. Its unspoiled beauty, the friendly people, sunshine all year round and the permanently changing and vibrating light captured my heart at once. The easy access to all different kind of enjoyments, be it culture or sport activities like sailing, diving, swimming, golf, riding, hiking through mountains and forests, visiting and climbing over antique sites and medieval castles make this island to be a perfect place to relax. Living on the property with one dog and three cats, I refurbished my 2nd little cottage so you -as a guest - can discover this beautiful island as well.

A really nice cottage, and a always very helpful hostess. The cottage have very nice surroundings, and wee were invited to use the owners terrace, with a fine vue over the see.

The location was fine, the cottage where clean and nice. I would love to recommend this place. Thanks to Ilsa for a lovely holiday. Gunnar and Anna Maria Pedersen.

Charming cottage, lovely host

  • 5 of 5

Ilsa's Secret Garden Cottage is a charming little building set within the grounds of host Ilsa's own home. As such, it does feel like you are staying with someone, complete with her wonderful cats and dog. The cottage is the antidote to the large sprawling hotels in North Cyprus which can be a bit soulless.

The cottage has everything you need and is very peaceful. A comfy bed, good facilities and outdoor space is wonderful, surrounded by flowers and plants. Eating al fresco is a positive delight and one of our favourite things was to have breakfast outside in the beautiful sunshine.

The views from Ilsa's terrace are truly sensational and you must watch the sunset from there at least once on your visit. Ilsa is a terrific host and a fount of information on the best places to eat locally, visit and see. She even arranged car hire for us from the airport so we didn't need taxis.

The village of Catalkoy itself is very well located and within easy reach of lots of places. A visit to Girne town with its picturesque harbour and ancient castle is a must. Shopping there is good and ATMs are plentiful not just here but at the supermarkets near the cottage too (I make a note of this because a Cyprus guide book I was thinking to buy at the airport mentioned the North had NO ATMs! Clearly writing with a Greek Cypriot bias).

If you want real Turkish Cypriot character though, head to the capital Lefkosa, to catch a glimpse of 'regular' life. The Buyuk Han is a must and there are lots of shopping opportunities here too. But go early in the day to avoid the heat (in summer) or later on when it cools down.

If you can venture further afield, spend a day in Gazi Magusa. This walled town has lots of history and just up the road are the ruins of Salamis. And the best beaches. Visit the Karpaz Peninsula too if you can.

Out west, you can visit the towns of Guzelyurt and Lefke. The coast road is lovely for driving and if you like seafood, little restaurants along the way are great for that kind of cuisine.

Local to the cottage is Shanya beach, good for sunbathing and lunch. I heartily recommend the Bergamot Restaurant along the main road after you leave Catalkoy. Tasty food, lovely service and live music too on certain evenings.

Tempo and Lemar Supermarkets are local but if you just want some bread and basic items, try the local 'bakkal' in the village.

I totally recommend the cottage for a stay, you won't be disappointed. And you'll fall in love with North Cyprus.

Happy holidays

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous holiday in this beautiful cottage with its magical garden. We relaxed so much and found it a perfect location to see the surrounding area. We had a local beach that was perfect for our daily swims and enjoyed talking to the owner,Ilsa, who was always pleased to offer local information. All in all it was perfect.

" Wie zu Hause, nur schöner!"

  • 5 of 5

Enjoy your trip!

Beautiful garden haven

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to north Cyprus. We wanted a relaxing holiday, with time to unwind and defuse from hectic urban life. Although we like to visit beautiful places and to eat out, we also wanted to stay where we could have slow mornings, long afternoons reading, and quiet evenings with simple food and (excellent, cheap) wine.

It was important for us to find a place we liked, and wanted to spend time in. The Garden Cottage lived up to our hopes, and more so. Everything here is good on the eye: the garden itself exquisite, and the studio-ish cottage lovely. It's all been furnished with comfort and an unostentacious stylishness in mind. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen well-stocked, and the shower powerful. There's plenty of space in its compact rooms. The bed/living room opens onto the glorious garden where there are all sorts of tempting places to sit and chat or read or - as we did, more and more - lie amidst green and flower, looking at the immaculate blue sky.

Ilsa is a terrific host: warm and friendly, she welcomes you to visit her own quite breathtaking view of the coast. We watched the sun go down from there and very lovely it was. She also showed us her own favourite swimming spot where it's almost guaranteed to have the beach to yourself.

Altogether, a very pleasurable holiday, and made easily so by Ilsa's care, her lovely garden, and a sun that rises dependably every morning and shines in the bluest sky.

Perfekter Urlaub in Ilsa's Cottage

  • 5 of 5
