The Mill House, Lee, nr Woolacombe, North Devon, England - The Mill House Sits In A Peaceful Bay, Its Front Gate Opens On To The Slipway To The Beach.

The Mill House is an amazing period holiday home standing right on the water's edge of Lee Bay. The sea borders the property on two sides, so in the summer you can sit out on the terrace overlooking the bay and enjoy a drink, barbecue and the fabulous sunsets. In the autumn/winter it's wonderful to sit inside around one of the log fires with good food, family and friends. The beach outside the house is a mixture of sand and rocks, so is great for exploring or just lazing around. There’s the secret Smugglers Path to Sandy Bay and the caves that go straight through the rocks. Lee village is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is famous for its fuchsia lined lanes. There is a good traditional pub, The Grampus, just a short walk from the Mill. There are some fantastic walks along the National Trust headlands to Bullpoint Lighthouse and onwards to one of the pubs in Mortehoe, or in the opposite direction to Ilfracombe. Both walks take in a spectacular coastline.

In July 2014 we featured in an ITV cookery mini-series, Coastal Cottage, with celebrity Masterchef Lisa Faulkner; the Mail on Sunday used the house for its 'Win a Dream Holiday Cottage' competition (sadly it wasn't me that won it) and we've been listed in the Guardian's Top Ten Getaways. We get lots of other mentions, but that gives you some of the highlights.

Dear Nick, Fantastic place, beautifully done - thank you - and see you again in the summer. D & S, Oxford. March 2012.

Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend. Had a ball swimming in the freezing sea around the coves. The Devon Girls, Bishops Stortford. Feb 2012.

I hope all my adventures can be as good as this one. Lilly didn't want to leave. Thank you. W & L, Trinidad, USA. Nov 2011.

What a spectacular place! It combines 16thC ambiance with 21stC comforts. The location is perfect for walking with a wide variety of trails, the views are incredible. It's not too far to visit many historic villages and pubs. It's also ideal for a retreat. The most you have to do is look out onto the bay and relax. I feel renewed : ) E, California. Nov 2011

Fab time had by all. Love it. R & J, Nottingham. Oct 2011

A dreamy weekend full of love and laughter. Oct 2011

The wow and the comfort.

  • 5 of 5

A simply stunning house to stay in with a very helpful and friendly owner. The location of the house really does have the wow factor even after our 3rd visit in 3 years. The kitchen is better equipped than mine at home. It has everything for dinner parties with friends or simply relaxing. My children loved being so close to the sea. I cannot give this house a high enough review.

Lovely

  • 4 of 5

A splendid location and a very well equipped house. Pub round the corner and a perfect spot by the sea. Some storm damage was still being sorted while we were there but that is the only thing to fault it and was a one off. Very warm, the new boiler is toasty! Nick and his family were very welcoming and can recommend kayaking in the bay and the smugglers path. Can't wait to go back. Felt more like a home away from home than a rental. Nice bedding too!

Owner's Response: Sounds like you all enjoyed it - the weather was amazing for March! The storm damage repairs are pretty much there now - thanks for your understanding whilst we finished off. Just a short section of railings to go back on now. See you again soon.

Fabulous location!

  • 5 of 5

I booked this property for a 70th birthday family celebration. Our party consisted of three generations and every one had a fantastic holiday!

When we arrived everyone was delighted with the location and the spec of the house. There was plenty of space for us all and the facilities of the kitchen were great for family meals.

The best thing about the property though, was it's stunning location! The kids loved it because they could nip to the beach whenever they wanted and mess around in the rock pools. The adults loved sitting in the garden with a glass of wine watching the sun go down - beautiful! And everybody loved having a barbeque on the beach.

All in all a great house and a fabulous location!

Owner's Response: Sounds like you all had a fabulous time. We do have quite a few big family get-togethers, sometimes taking other houses in the village - I can always put people in touch for that. And we can extend our dining table to seat easily seat 14, with 16 no problem. We even had a family of 20 squished round, but that was very cosy. Hope to see you again before the 80th : )

Just Brilliant

We have have stayed at the Mill House a number of times, but it never loses the WOW factor when you arrive.

The house is truly wonderful, both in position and decor, and once again we were blessed with good weather, we will continue to go every year for as long as it is open to rental.

Location

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Kayak hire - Single and two man kayaks are available for hire and can be launched directly from the Mill House. Paddle out around Lee Bay, exploring the rocky inlets, or go further along the coast if you’re experienced. Costs £6.75/day for weekly hire, or from £15 for just a day. We have four singles and a double. Surf lessons – we know the best instructors and the best surf spots – solo or in a group. Example cost, £50 for a half day (2 hours) session including board and wetsuit. Coasteering – you’ll be equipped with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet before setting off round the cost with an instructor, leaping - lemming-like - off the cliffs … as low or as high as you like! Cost at £30-50 per person depending on group size and season. Chef for a night – let a chef come cook for you. Choose a menu and everything is taken care of, even the washing up! It costs no more than a good meal at a decent pub.

Coast/Beach:

The beach outside the house is a mixture of sand, shingle, pebbles and rocks, so is great for exploring, rock pooling, sea fishing at high tides, swimming or just lazing around. There’s the secret Smugglers Path to Sandy Bay and the caves that go straight through the rocks. Further afield the sandy beaches famous for their surfing at Woolacombe, (or the other end of this beach which is quieter and our favourite Putsborough), 5km, Croyde 12km and Saunton 15.5km are well worth a visit.

Travel:

The Mill House is shown on Google Maps. Or use the postcode EX34 8LR. Descend the hill into the the village of Lee, and continue through until you can see the sea where the road bends to the left. At this point The Mill House is immediately on your right overlooking the bay.

Further Details:

Places to visit near The Mill House include: Sandy Bay, Lee, via the secret Smugglers Path. Walk to Bullpoint Lighthouse and onwards to one of Morthoe's pubs - Chichester Arms or Ship Aground. Barricane Beach for a Curry Night in the summer. Grab a curry from the beach cafe and enjoy a unique, if not unorthodox, experience. Bring your own beer/wine. Everyone we've sent there has loved it! Putsborough Beach Cafe - great for snacks, lunches and even early evening meals. The Rock, Georgeham - great food. The Kings Arms, Georgeham - great music. The Thatch, Croyde - great vibe, buzzy, busy great for families and couples alike. Hunters Inn, Heddons Mouth - amazing cliff top walks. Squires Fish and Chip Restaurant (or take away) - best you'll find around. A must visit place. The unspoilt island of Lundy is well worth a visit with day trips from Ilfracombe available. It is only 3.5 miles long full of wild life, from puffins to swimming with seals, the sea surrounding the island is Englands only statutory Marine Nature Reserve.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: One important point you must note. The Mill House is a period property, standing right by the sea and so is affected by this environment. Although we have a regular maintenance programe, you will see a few areas of flaking paint downstairs. Please forgive the Mill House these imperfections - the salt and damp in the air creates these problems and so we’re working with conservation and historic building specialists to try and find remedies that last more than a few weeks. Each guest will be provided with a bath towel, bath/shower rooms will have bath mats and hand towels. On holidays of more than a week an optional clean is offered and fresh bed linen. Other: Dining can be enjoyed in the original Mill Room with views looking out to sea and where French doors give access to the terrace and gardens.
