Villa in Xirosterni, Nr. Almirida (Almerida/Almyrida), Vamos and Gavalahori, Chania, Crete, Greece - Tranquil And Secluded, Private Pool, Beautiful Views In An Acre Of Gated Grounds, 10 Mins From Beach

In an acre of gated grounds, next to pine and olive groves, Villa Aphrodite is designed for maximum comfort. Its style blends traditional Cretan arches with sympathetic contemporary lines. Guests instantly recognize that this isn't a typical or basic holiday rental. The hand-made furnishings and fabrics, the modern amenities, the numerous French windows allowing the outside to flow indoors, the choice of sun or shade - all speak of the owner's careful attention to your needs and relaxation. Each air-conditioned bedroom has its own balcony or terrace for you to enjoy that lazy, private breakfast with your partner, or that cool evening drink while watching the sunset or the clearest of stars. Set on a gentle slope, the upper floor living areas take advantage of the gentle breeze and stunning views on all sides, while the bedrooms benefit from being in the cooler downstairs. Top Traveller Review

About the Owner

Sandra and Bob escape from their busy lives in television and theatre to Villa Aphrodite as often as they can. Whenever they are there to re-charge their batteries, they always have a beautifully relaxing time. When they go with their four children, other families and friends their holidays become truly memorable. Meals became lingering events, poolside times a mixture of reading, snoozing or fun and games. Their children have grown up through the family holidays and learned to swim, to snorkel, to dive off rocks, to sail and to fish in the crystal waters of Almyrida. Sandra's interest in design found expression in the villa, while Bob's fascination with the history and culture of Crete encouraged him to protect the original stone features of the site and the native trees and shrubs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a lovely 2 weeks staying at the villa. The veranda's great for enjoying breakfast and an evening drink, while looking at the amazing views and sunsets. The pool is wonderful for cooling off and the beanbags very comfortable for sunbathing on. The table tennis was fun, though we weren't very good! All in all, a very peaceful setting to enjoy a wonderful relaxing holiday! (The Ross Family 15/9/14)

"We've had the most wonderful holiday in your lovely villa which is so homely and welcoming. The pool is perfect for relaxing on a lilo or a more healthy game of volleyball! So sad to be going home." (The Donpefield Family 11/8/14)

"We couldn't be more pleased with the villa, views amazing, villa spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Pool wonderful - children had a great time in it! Couldn't have wished for anything better - we had an amazing time and enjoyed the well thought out amenities provided." Cain Family - aged from 5 yrs to 64 - 2/6/2014)

"This villa is fab, it has everything you could need/want! We will be back definitely!" (The Knights - Claire, Ben, and kids 5/11/13)

"The villa is fantastic. The beach is ideal for a lazy day while the kids play in the sea and just a short car journey away. The pooltable and games kept the teenagers happy while the adults relaxed. We had a great week and look forward to coming back." (The Webb Family 27/10/13)

"Me and my brother loved the pool it was awesome! I thought having a candle-lit dinner by the pool was really nice, as well as eating on the balcony. If you're looking for a great boat trip the best one is Capt Nick's Glass Bottom Boat in Chania because we saw 3 octopi and millions of fish. Thanx a lot!" (Kat Stuart 12 yrs, 3/9/13)

"We've had the most fantastic holiday. The villa has been perfect for 2 families with teenage children. Pool, views, balconies all magnificent. The area is wonderful, the food has been delicious. We don't want to go home!" (The Cain Family 13/8/13)

Tranquil, relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week and have just returned! The weather was beautiful and the Villa... Perfect. Views A*, Pool A*, interior A*~location was peaceful but near enough to whatever you need (shops/tavernas) vamos is about 8 minutes drive by car or even taxi. (Stelios- Anne helped me book to visit almyrida one night) Hire car is a must. The only minor improvements to be made (and I mean minor!) are: some more family games perhaps and CDs/music channel availability. WiFi would be terrific - we took our iPads for music and then realised the Internet facility was only really for laptops (dongle) not an option if you travel with only hand luggage as we do. Having said that we would probably return in the hope that these things may become available. Sandra and Anne were so helpful. One last thing- the dirt track is not for the faint hearted if finding it for the first time in darkness- but very exciting! As far as villa holidays go- we loved it!

Fabulous Week..!

  • 5 of 5

We just wanted to say thank you, we had a fabulous week in your fantastic Villa . The photos don't show just how beautiful and comfortable it really is....and the view is breathtaking. We arrived in the dark after a terrifying drive through a thunderstorm to wake up to that view from the upstairs terrace was magical!!!

It has been 30 years since I have been to Greece and I was so relieved to see that it hasn't changed, still laid back and the local hospitality was very generous (particularly with the Raki !!)

We hope to return to Villa Aphrodite with friends and family in the near future!

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful stay at Villa Aphrodite - so much so that we have already booked for next year! Comfortable sleeping and sitting areas, loads of balconies, amazing pool. Two families with teenagers and we never felt on top of each other. The views were glorious, a truly perfect location for tavernas and exploring the west of the island. This is a hidden gem of a retreat, and while I would love to keep it to myself this place deserves its 5 stars. Thank you The Slingers.

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at villa Aphrodite in Xironsterni, Crete. All I can say is 'what a great villa'!

The rooms and furnishings were of a high standard with each bedroom having its own colour scheme with loads of wardrobe and storage space. The main living Area had huge comfy sofas and I counted 5 terrace areas.

The pool is fab and of a decent size with sun loungers and huge waterproof bean bags. Also areas under cover if you want to escape the sun. Also really useful was a fridge by the pool!

The kitchen was fully equipped to the standard you have in your own home - there was nothing we needed.

I would really recommend this for a holiday rental - the more of you the better....

Well done the Slingers

Location

From the Owner

After years of holidaying in France, Spain, Turkey and Bulgaria, and romanticizing about building a getaway, we found ourselves returning time after time to the beautiful, unspoilt Apokoronas region of Western Crete. We fell in love with the scenery, the slow pace, and the friendliness. (We took a democratic vote - and it was unanimous!) We looked at over a hundred plots, ruins, old houses and finally found an acre which had the 'Goldilocks factor': not too close to the beaches, not too far from tavernas and shops, and yet private and peaceful. Just right! Perhaps our favorite evening experience is to stroll down the track from our property, through the spinnies, past the stone threshing circles and ruins of a long-abandoned village to the imaginative cuisine of the Gavalahori tavernas.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

A 10 minute drive to the blue flag sandy beaches and pretty harbours of Almirida and Kalives, both child-safe with many beach side tavernas, snack bars and shops; 20 minutes to the bustling resort of Georgiopouli with its fresh-water fed beach of Kalavaki or the pounding surf and beach sports along its 7 kilometre coastline; 25 minutes to the fresh-water Lake Kournas with its turtles, wild-life and hire boats; 15 minutes to an unusual and peaceful bathe in the crystal waters at Ombrogialos cove.

Travel:

Chania airport, served directly by Easyjet, Ryanair, Monarch and Thomson, or Aegean and Olympic via Athens, is a 40 minute drive to the villa. Heraklion airport, served also by Jet2, is a 2 hour coastal drive. There are many European companies which fly into both airports. The over-night ferry to and from Piraeus harbour in Athens can take you to Souda, 30 minutes from the villa, or to Heraklion, a 2 hour drive. Car hire, easy and plentiful, is essential but also desirable for exploring.

Distances:

The villa is a 5 minute walk to the centre of Xirosterni village with its general shop, Kafenion, church and wells. Vamos, 5 mins drive, has tavernas, shops, bank, ATM, pharmacy, English butcher, post-office. Gavalahori, 5 minutes, has excellent tavernas, bakery, cocktail bar, traditional crafts and ancient monuments. The beach resorts of Almirida and Kalives have a host of water-side tavernas, shops, supermarkets, internet cafes and gift shops. Georgopouli has nightclubs, hotels and is lively.

Further Details:

Once into the gated grounds, the beautifully prepared villa - named after the Greek Goddess of Love - comes complete with a welcome pack of groceries, a guide book, maps and a substantial file of local events, activities and historical sites. Guests often find it hard to tear themselves away from the relaxing villa, inviting pool, or games area, but the local villages, both inland and beach-side, are well worth sampling. They are still traditional, friendly and very good value. Luckily the region of the Apokoronas is one of the greenest in Crete, the scenery beautiful, and the amenities extensive. Only a 20 minute drive away are the impressive remains of the ancient city of Aptera, and the villa is perfectly placed for exploring the various and breath-taking gorges of the White Mountains - so called because of its snow-clad peaks in winter. A visit to the bustling nearby city of Chania is a must. Its street markets, tavernas, entertainment and museums are very colourful, and watching the cosmopolitan world stroll by while you sip a sunset cocktail alongside the Venetian harbour can be the perfect way to top your shopping expedition.

Facilities

From the Owner

Being so close to the beach, the resorts, the village tavernas and kafenions, the energy, markets and culture of Chania and Rethymnon, gives guests a host of attractions and activities to choose from. But being able to return at leisure, to lounge and cool off around your own pool...to sit and watch the views, the sunset or the stars can't be beaten. Many holiday developments squeeze properties close to each other, but Villa Aphrodite flanked by protected pine and olive groves is not over-looked. It enjoys panoramas on all sides, and has a spacious and expansive feeling. As a couple there by ourselves, we've felt snug and pampered, but because of the sleeping and dining flexibility of the villa we've had two other families joining us without it feeling cramped or uncomfortable.
