About the Owner

We bought this property in 2007 as our holiday home. We started letting it for holidays in 2008.

I enjoy staying at Coral Cottage off season, now I am retired.

This is helpful for our guests as by staying in the Cottage I become aware of anything that needs doing.

We now have friends in the area who have moved down from London, which makes our visits more enjoyable.

Winter break in Coral Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a very pleasant weekend break this November. The weather was more pleasant than was expected and the cottage proved to be a charming little sun trap. The cottage itself was well laid out, clean, had a modern bathroom and kitchen and the bedrooms were bright and airy. The wood burning stove in the sitting room proved to be a godsend following our return from a chilly fireworks display and the garden to the rear of the property was attractive and well maintained. The cottage is conveniently placed for local amenities (including some great pubs) and towns like Christchurch and these were easy to find thanks to the local information provided by Alan.

We would be happy to return and to recommend to others

Our 2017 summer holiday accomodation in Dorset.

  • 5 of 5

We found Wincton a very convenient place to stay, quite close to two Pubs and conveniently situated to so many of the attractions that Lovely Dorset has to offer. The cottage itself is well maintained with modern facilities and the owner has a cleansing-team who keep it spotlessly clean.

Tired and in need of updating including decorating and furniture.

  • 1 of 5

Extremely disappointed to be told of the noise issue only after paying for the break. Thin walls between the terrace of cottages led to noise issues. Parking was not plentiful as advertised, presumably one space per cottage, some residents were using two and I had to park in the pub car park one evening. The row of cottages were on a very busy junction with lots of traffic noise till late at night and early in the morning.

Had to walk around the terrace of cottages to access garage and to use back gate as padlocks were on the outside to make it convenient for the gardener and not for visitors!!

Steep stairs, difficult for me with mobility problems. No warnings about poor for disabled.

Lots of instructions on wanting visitor to use rubbish bags and seal and put out in the alleyway at the back of property - see above access.Take your own bedding, towels etc.

Cottage needed interior painting, carpets dirty, cobwebs dangling from the ceilings, settees so worn might as well as sat on the floor, no support in the seating!

Expected much more for cost paid per night, will not be returning anytime soon!

Owner's Response: I was sorry to read that these guests found that Coral Cottage did not meet their expectations. There are in excess of 20 recent five star reviews on the Owners direct website for Coral Cottage from very happy guests. My responses are as follows:- Whilst there are thin walls between Coral Cottage and Lantern Cottage, our delightful neighbours are always careful to keep the noise down. There are nine parking spaces on the road outside the row of six cottages. Usually parking is not a problem, but there is no guarantee when parking on a road . Access for the gardener has to be through the back gate, as the only alternative is through the terraced cottage and this would not be acceptable. The padlock, for which guests have the code, is there to provide security for the enclosed garden. The stairs are typical of a Cottage, and steeper than a new build, However many of our regular guests are retired and do not find them a problem. Had these guests informed me of their mobility problems, I would have mentioned the stairs. Parts of the interior of Coral Cottage have been repainted earlier this year, but yes, more needs to be done, hopefully during the quieter months for bookings. The carpets have been cleaned this year, but towards the end of the season will need cleaning again . One of the two sofa’s is a sofa bed. It may be that these guests found the sofa bed less comfortable than they would have expected. Both sofas were bought on 8th January 2011 at a cost of £930. Can I ask that potential guests read the other reviews to see how many guests like staying at Coral Cottage. Normally our guests are delighted with the location and facilities of Coral Cottage, this review is the first one we have received from dissatisfied guests. Thank you Alan

Location

From the Owner

We like being close to the sea/beaches, the New Forest and Bournemouth. One of my hobbies is sailing (on friend's yachts), so this location is handy for Poole, Lymington, Hamble and Portsmouth. I also like cycling in the New Forest, and try not to use the car once I have arrived at Coral Cottage. This area is very popular with the fast road cyclists. At the weekend there a lots of groups of cyclists enjoying the area. My bike is a hybrid mountain bike, so I get overtaken a lot!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bournemouth at 5 Miles Nearest Barpub : Fisherman's Haunt at 50 Metres Nearest Ferry : Lymington to the Isle of Wight at 7 Miles Nearest Train : Christchurch at 5 Miles Nearest Motorway : M27 at 15 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Fisherman's Haunt at 50 Metres Nearest Beach : Mudeford and Avon Beaches at 3 Miles Car: necessary

Coast & Beach

10 minutes drive to Avon Beach at Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour. The Avon Beach is quiet, safe and has awards for cleanliness. There are several popular quality cafes on the promenade.

There are more beaches at Bournemouth along with other attractions at this major resort.

Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve is a must for a day out. Just 15 minutes drive from Coral Cottage. I usually cycle from Coral Cottage, and enjoy a tea and cake at the Beach Cafe. You can also catch the ferry from Mudeford Quay/Avon Beach to Hengisbury Head. In addition to a lovely walk up onto Hengistbury Head itself, there are two cafes, one at each end of the walk, an inexpensive car park, and a Land Train along the flat route to the end of the dunes. There you will see numerous Beach Huts which are sold by estate agents for about £100k!

New Forest.

Just five minutes drive from Coral Cottage you will be over the cattle grid and able to enjoy the country side of the New Forest. The pony's are very tame, great fun to watch and photograph.

At Burley in the New Forest there are bicycles for hire. There are numerous easy tracks to cycle along, including an old railway line route. There is a great cafe along the way built in an old station.

In Burley in the New Forest there is horse riding for all levels of experience. I ride occasionally. Best to book a few days in advance.

Lymington in the New Forest has a Saturday Market, several Marina's a Town Quay where visiting yachts are moored, and salt marshes with paths running through them which are great for bird watching.

Poole Harbour is a must for a day out. The town quay is a hive of activity. There are boat trips to Brownsea Island which has read squirrels and peacocks with attitude. This is a National Trust island, free to enter for members. The boat trip is extra, however it does include a tour round Poole Harbour, with a commentary.

Beaulieu is also a great day out. There is the National Car Museum, Bucklers Hard which is where wooden ships used to be built between two rows of houses leading down to the river. There is also a marina, and a great pub serving good food.

Isle of Wight.

Ferries run to the Isle of Wight from Lymington continuously during the day and evening.

Distances:

The New Forest is just five minutes by car from Coral Cottage.

Christchurch Town, Quay and Priory are about ten minutes drive from Coral Cottage.

Bournemouth with its amazing beaches is about 15 minutes drive from Coral Cottage.

Poole Harbour where there is a huge range of activities is about 45 minutes away by car.

Hengisbury Head Nature Reserve is ten minutes drive from Coral Cottage.

Further Details:

Within ten minutes drive there are two Waitrose, Sainburys, M & S and a Tesco. It is ten minutes walk to the nearest shop, that sells nearly all you need.

There are three Gastropubs within walking distance. The Fishermans Haunt can be reached by crossing the road from Coral Cottage and walking through the pub garden. The main entrance is in another road, so we have easy access and no noise.

Facilities

From the Owner

There are a number of very nice Gastro Pubs nearby for eating out. Three within walking distance. Our favourite is the Woolpack in Sopely. Good value, great food, but you do need to book for Saturday nights. The place to eat is in the conservatory overlooking a floodlit stream. There is a pavement all the way if you prefer to walk. Take a torch though. There is a car park. Opposite, but far way enough not to be a problem is the Fisherman's Haunt. The food and beer is excellent. I provide an information pack giving the telephone numbers and post codes of the best places to eat.

There are large and small BBQs in the garage. Bicycles, inflatable boats, windsurfers and canoes can be brought up the drive into the garden. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Guests should bring their own bed linen and towels. Duvets and pillows provided. The property is cleaned on the change over day. Other: Dining area.
