About Robert Walker

Our family has owned Burnside Cottage for more than 45 years. We spent our holidays there as children, and for many years it was used only by family and friends. A few years ago, our parents passed on the baton to us. It was time to fix the roof and refurbish the inside of the cottage. We have been letting the cottage since the improvements were completed in 2009. We still take our own holidays there, and a third generation of the Walker family now hike with us along the quiet country lanes, play poo-sticks in the stream, and are learning the names of the wildlife that continue to trek and fly through the garden. Charlie and Robert Walker.

Robert Walker purchased this cottage in 1960

Guestbook comments from the owner

1st comment: The cottage is brilliantly equipped - it has everything from children’s toys to golf clubs- and a very good list of local places to go.

2nd comment: Very pleasant, the layout of the cottage was convenient and easy to get around. Simply decorated and excellent accessories. The local art work around the house was a great advert for the artist. The garden was well kept and we were able to have a BBQ. Location is first class for peace and quiet but near lots of interesting villages.

3rd comment: Thoughtful touches, flowers, Christmas tree, furry hot water bottle. Vast amount of information including OS Maps.

4th comment: It was very secluded and the wildlife was fantastic, deer in the garden first thing, and owls of an evening and all sorts in between.

Quiet, cosy, well equipped.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was the best we've stayed at in terms of local information and maps, plus personal recommendations from the owners. It was very well maintained and equipped. Very quiet and lovely dark skies. We enjoyed the environment and saw a red squirrel right outside the door.

Comfortable house in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five spent two weeks at Burnside cottage in August. The house was spacious, well equipped and spotlessly clean. We loved the open plan design. Robert, the owner is responsive and helpful.

We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking to escape the crowds and stay in this beautiful part of Galloway.

Wonderful cottage, cosy and well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully rustic from the outside, yet modern and smart inside. Great location to get away from it all, but with decent amenities a short trip away eg local artesian produce supplies, restaurants, cafes, pubs and beaches

Meikle Killantrae: Splendid Isolation.

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed the location and the peace and quiet. A few things need attention. All three gates need repair; the chimney should be bird proofed; and the hot taps in the bathroom and kitchen need some work. The operation of the television via Sky is idiosyncratic to say the least but we mastered it eventually, it should be looked at however. The directions for finding the property when approached from Newton Stewart were spot on but mention might be made of the "hogs back" hazard on the access road - we scraped the underside of our car on first approach but subsequently avoided the problem. The property was clean and inviting upon arrival and we enjoyed exploring a part of Galloway we hadn't visited before.

Clean, warm and cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Burnside cottage is situated in an idyllic spot on the Wigtown Peninsula. The wildlife around the cottage was amazing; we saw deer twice in the adjacent field, many different types of birds on the feeders, buzzards, voles to name but a few.

The coastline is stunning and we visited most of the local sights. Don't miss Rigg Bay a 20 minute walk from Garlieston harbour. We also managed to trace my husbands family back to the mid 1600s as they hale from the Wigtown area.

The weather was kind but it was lovely to return to such a warm and well equipped cottage. The owners and Linda the housekeeper, should be congratulated as we wanted for nothing.
