About Maddie

I fell in love with France as a teenager on a school trip to Dordogne. The following year I came to Normandy on a school exchange trip (my penfriend lived near Brionne) and when I left school I just came over here to improve my French and enjoy life. Over 35 years later I'm still here !

Maddie purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Maddie chose Eure

I have lived in the Brionne area for over 35 years since I left the UK and just love the laid back way of life here in Normandy. There's so much space, too, with fields and forests all around, and the people are very friendly, on the whole.

When I met and married Bruno over 20 years ago I knew I'd made my mind up to stay here for good. We bought our own house then went on to build the holiday homes, hoping to provide comfortable, clean places to stay - just what we like to find when we travel with our two children. We've equipped them with cots, high chairs, stair gates, etc and many toys and games inside and out (swings + playhouse).

We live in the village should you need any advice/help during your stay but we respect our guests' privacy at all times.

What makes this cottage unique

Here in the village, it's very quiet and peaceful, but a five-minute drive takes you into Brionne where there are 2 supermarkets, lots of small shops, a twice-weekly market and several bars and restaurants. Not to mention the great lake with its sandy beach, children's play area, barbecues, peddle boats, canoes and mini-golf course.

Honfleur + Deauville are just an hour's drive as is Monet's Garden and Cerza - a great wildlife park. There are several chateaux within a 20-minute drive, one with an 18-hole golf course. Tha landing beaches are about a one and a half hour-drive as is Paris, or just one hour by train. However you'll find plenty of interesting towns and villages a lot closer to home.

A perfect family getaway.

  • 5 of 5

We could not have asked for a better holiday. La Maisment easily accommodated parents, grandparents and a busy 2 year old! Maddie and Bruno are excellent hosts providing a lovely welcome pack and invaluable information in a handy folder, about the local area. We did venture to Arromanches, Rouen and Honfleur but also found plenty to do in the local area such as the lake at Brionne, Harcourt, Bec Hellouin and a chateau. The Leclerc supermarket on the road to Bernay was huge and had everything we needed in terms of food shopping!

Our toddler loved the garden, especially the slide and feeding the chickens! La Maisment is great for families. Thank you so much for a brilliant holiday.

Great home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week here. La Maisment has everything you need and is fantastic for keeping kids occupied - heaps of toys / games / books. Great welcome pack and the best homemade jam I have ever tasted!

Surroundings are lovely and it is a great base for exploring places like Honfleur / Deauville / Rouen.

La Maisment - amazing.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. The gite has all we needed. Very well equipped and comfortable. Maddie and Bruno really went out of their way to help us.

We would recommend it to all.

The weather helped and there is plenty of garden furniture for sitting out in it, with a drink of course.

We didn't really eat out in the locality so can't comment on that aspect.

We enjoyed the market in Brionne and the car boot sale at Nassandres.

Owner's Response: Thank you John. Pleased you and Paula enjoyed your stay. We were only too happy to help you find the beam - it's nice to think that a small part of Normandy will adorn your home and maybe remind you of your stay at La Maisment.

Excellent accomodation

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week staying in La Maisment. This is by far the most comfortable clean gite we have stayed in over many years of renting in France. Maddie and Bruno have thought of everything you could need to make your stay enjoyable whether you are a family or a couple (as we are) including a welcome pack to ensure you get settled in. Aclou is a good central location to visit all of Normandy with the advantage of the local main town of Brionne and all its amenities a 5 min drive away. Nothing to beat sitting in the lovely garden enjoying an aperitif after a day out. We highly recommend a stay though perhaps it would be to our advantage to keep it a secret!

Our stay at La Maisment was very enjoyable, the gite is set in a quiet village with easy access to a range of interesting towns, villages and chateaux. A week wasn't really long enough to tour the surroundings as well as lounge about in the garden. There was a family with two little girls next door and the facilities for young children were superb.Overall we thought La Maisment was well equipped , comfortable and good value. We greatly appreciated Maddie's welcome.

Notes on accommodation: We have tried to make our holiday homes just what you would like to find when you go away. All bed linen is provided and beds will be made up for your arrival. You'll also find a "Welcome Starter Pack" including your 1st breakfast : tea, coffee, milk, sugar, fruit juice, eggs from our hens, bread, butter + homemade jam, toilet paper, salt, pepper, kitchen towels, soap, washing-up liquid, dish-washer + washing machine tablets, charcoal for the barbecue etc. There's lots to do in the area and you'll find plenty of brochures at La Maisment, or you can collect some from the local tourist office in Brionne where there's also free wi-fi. We live just up the road so are on hand if you need any help and we often call at the holiday homes especially in the summer season to water the garden and feed the hens, but we respect our guests' privacy at all times. Outside: The enclosed garden has a lawn in front of La Maisment. There's a shared play area for children with a play house, swing set and toys and games. French boules for adults : You can also join the locals for a game in front of the village hall most evenings in the summer. Both houses have private patios (one south facing, the other west facing) with barbecues, tables, chairs, sunloungers + sunshades. Next to the secure car park is the hen run and feeding them proves to be a big hit with children. Help yourselves to fruit (raspberries, peaches, apples, kiwis) and we'll provide you with tomatoes + cucumber in season, and fresh eggs when our hens oblige.
