Normandy-style gite providing comfortable, clean, homely accommodation for up to 6 guests. We have tried to make Le Batison as child-friendly as possible, thinking of all the things you will need for your baby/toddler when on holiday : 2 cots, 2 high chairs, baby's bath, stairgate, bed rails, a potty, children's plates, dishes + cutlery, lots of books, toys and games inside and out. Plenty to keep them busy while you enjoy a glass of wine on the patio. The ground floor bedroom has a comfortable king-size bed (150X200) and a cot, the bathroom is next to it with a large shower with body sprays, radio and lights, washing machine and towel dryer. Separate WC. Fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, large fridge-freezer, micro-wave oven, electric oven with vitro-ceramic hob, toaster, kettle, coffee machine and seating for 6. The living area has a comfortable 3-seater sofa and 2 armchairs, a flat-screen TV and DVD player. Wifi available. There's a spacious mezzanine bedroom/playroom with a double bed, 2 singles and a cot. Outside on the patio there's a barbecue, table, chairs + sunshade and sun loungers and a play area for children with swings, slide and playhouse. Not forgetting our ever-hungry hens which children love feeding, and then enjoying their fresh eggs. There are 2 swimming pools, both a 15-minute drive. Ideal for sightseeing: Honfleur + Deauville on the coast 1-hour away, the D-day beaches slightly further. Monet's house + gardens about a 1-hout drive, Cerza Wildlife Park a 45-minute drive, and several local chateaux (4 within a 20-minute drive) one with an 18-hole golf course. For sport-lovers there's the "Base de Loisirs" (lakeside sandy beach) 5 minutes away in Brionne for canoeing, kayaking, mini-golf, tennis and swimming, or just relaxing on the sandy beach. No entrance fee, just 3€ parking. Stroll in the local shops, mingle with the population, and even practise your French! Walk in the countryside, grab a bargain at a Brocante or Foire à Tout (Street Fair), play French boules with the locals, or just enjoy a glass of wine on a terrace café as you watch the world go by.
I fell in love with France as a teenager on a school trip to Dordogne. The following year I came to Normandy on a school exchange trip (my penfriend lived near Brionne) and when I left school I just came over here to improve my French and enjoy life. Over 35 years later I'm still here ! I have done various jobs over the years, but have been teaching English to adults since 1991, working part-time now to have time to look after our holiday homes.
Maddie purchased this house in 2008
I have lived in the Brionne area for over 35 years since I left the UK and just love the laid back way of life here in Normandy. There's so much space, too, with fields and forests all around, and the people are very friendly, on the whole.
When I met and married Bruno over 20 years ago I knew I'd made my mind up to stay here for good. We bought our own house then went on to build the holiday homes, hoping to provide comfortable, clean places to stay - just what we like to find when we travel with our two children. We've equipped them with cots, high chairs, stair gates, etc and many toys and games inside and out (swings + playhouse).
We live in the village should you need any advice/help during your stay but we respect our guests' privacy at all times.
Here in the village, it's very quiet and peaceful, but a five-minute drive takes you into Brionne where there are 2 supermarkets, lots of small shops, a twice-weekly market and several bars and restaurants. Not to mention the Outdoor Leisure Centre at thet lake with its sandy beach, children's play area, barbecues, peddle boats, canoes and mini-golf course.
Honfleur + Deauville are just an hour's drive as is Monet's Garden and Cerza - a great wildlife park. There are several chateaux (Harcourt, Champs de Bataille, Beaumesnil) within a 20-minute drive, one with an 18-hole golf course. Tha landing beaches are about a one and a half hour-drive as is Paris, or just one hour by train. However you'll find plenty of interesting towns and villages a lot closer to home.
- "The house and garden are beautiful and so well-equipped for us all. The girls loved all the toys and Sophie has learnt to swing on her own ! The area has so much to do and the children especially loved the Butterfly House in Honfleur." Mark, Helen Sophie + Lizzie. April 2015.
- "A very relaxing Joyeux Noël. The best equipped gite we have stayed at." Rob, Debs & Evin. Dec. 2014.
- "Our stay was most comfortable and enjoyable. Gite ideal for our requirements. Very clean + well equipped. Many thanks." Paul & David. October 2014.
- "What a fantastic week ! Lovely house - we had everything we could have wished for. Beautiful location + garden. The children really appreciated the toys. See you next July." Suzanne, Paul, Kirsty + Amos. July 2013.
- "I think we have visited all the places suggested (well nearly) in Maddie's list and can recommend them all. Cerza is particularly good for children and we loved Honfleur. We had excellent days at Disney and in Paris - who'd have thought it would be free to park in Paris in August? - Top tip Bruno! Thanks for being so welcoming and for all your useful hints + tips which made our holiday that much better". July 2011. Adam, Alison, Megan & Zach.
- "Fantastic base to explore Normandy - Honfleur was a real find and we loved exploring Rouen. Grace really enjoyed making friends with the chickens - the garden is toddler-heaven! Highly recommended for young families - everything is catered for, including toys!" June 2011. Clare, David & Grace Essex.
A lovely cottage in a quiet village location. Family friendly, clean, with all necessities covered. Maddie is a welcoming and helpful host. We enjoyed our stay very much.
This lovely property had everything we needed for a relaxed holiday; it was well equipped and nicely laid out, with plenty of things to keep our two young boys occupied, both inside and out. It is well located for exploring all aspects of Normandy, and further afield if you wish. There are great supermarkets and markets all within a ten mile radius, although the town of Brionne two miles from the house has everything you need to get going, although Maddie's welcoming gifts of brioche, butter, jam, milk etc left is wanting for nothing on our first day!
We managed to visit Rouen on market day, Paris on the train from Bernay, the lake in Brionne and the Normandy Beaches among other things during our week.
If you are looking for an excellent value base to explore the Normandy region and beyond whilst feeling that you are well integrated into French culture you'd struggle to find somewhere as nice as Le Batison.... thanks Maddie, we hope to visit again very soon!
We had a great stay in Normandy with fantastic weather all week. The cottage was lovely and the mezzanine with vast amount of toys was very welcome to our 18-month old, who also enjoyed conversing with the chickens! Lots of walking and cycling in this great rural area.
Warm reception on arrival from Maddie, full of information about all the local area & places to visit - there are many, also about the local specialities in food etc. classic Normandie. The cottage is very well set up & extreemly comfortable, also lovely garden to have BBQ & relax.
A very comfortable, warm gîte, very clean and all basics provided. A fabulous new shower unit has recently been fitted which was a nice surprise! Freshly laid eggs from the hens at the end of the garden made the welcome pack just perfect. It was relatively easy to find but is close to main road networks making visiting areas of interest very straight forward. We would definitely recommend it as a holiday home & look forward to staying there again.
We arrived very late, followed the detailed description of the hosts. Our hosts prepared all the essentials and more. The cottage is beautiful, clean and very well equipped. Nice quiet village in an area worth exploring. Hiking, biking, fishing, lovely villages, shopping and good restaurants at a close distance. All very clearly described in material prepared by the hosts. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended.
