About the property

House in Hartsop, Patterdale, Ullswater, Cumbria, England - Peaceful Location, Superb Fell Walking from the Door

Built in the 1920s by the artist and embroiderer Ann Macbeth, High Bield is a remarkable house which was completely refurbished a few years ago. It was built high on the fell and takes in views of Brotherswater and Ullswater and offers walking from the door to High St, Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield and many other popular spots. Almost every room has a spectacular view, especially the twin room which was originally an artist's studio. The house oozes charm and is very comfortable and warm, with a woodburner in the sitting room.

About Rebecca Russell

This is a family home which we love and have owned for many years. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Rebecca Russell purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Rebecca Russell chose Penrith

High Bield is in one of the most amazing locations in the Lake District. It sits on the fell side above the beautiful village of Hartsop which nestles at the foot of the Kirkstone pass. The views are spectacular. There are many hugely enjoyable walks from the door. But I have spent many a happy wet Sunday with a cup of tea and the papers, watching the weather move over the valley and the hills around. An artist who lived locally built the house in the 1920s and designed it with the views in mind. Even when the rest of the Lake District is heaving with crowds, there's little chance you'll be bothered by anyone when you're staying at High Bield. Just leave the car in the garage and walk, paint or just light the fire and look at the view.

What makes this cottage unique

The location of the house is spectacular with amazing views and fantastic walking from the door.

Fabulous house with breathtaking views

  • 5 of 5

If you want a less busy location, with walks on your doorstep, stunning views and the odd visit from a herd of deer then this is the place for you. This house is extremely comfortable, so when you’ve returned from a walk, or you want to just enjoy the ambience there is plenty to keep you entertained, or simply explore the nearby Fells from the comfort of the living room. As previous reviews have said the track is a little steep in places, however there is a car park in the village if you would rather stretch your legs, and the walk is just 10 minutes (with the satisfaction of reaching your own secluded hideaway at the end). Local shop is just a mile or two up the road, with Ullswater a little beyond with yet more spectacular walks. Can’t wait to go back !

Lovely house in stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable house with everything that you need for a perfect holiday, lovely and remote but only a few miles from stores in Patterdale and glenridding. Wonderful views from the house, track to the cottage is steep in places but well worth it when you reach the house!

A fantastic lakes adventure

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Highbield for a week with 2 toddlers, 2 babies and 4 adults in search of a mountain break. It was fantastic; the house is very welcoming and the location is spectacular. We will miss having our meals with such a backdrop! For kids, they do need supervision, but there are endless adventures. For adults many walks from the doorstep.

The house facilities are great/ the kitchen is very well stocked. We would highly recommended the house.

Superb Location and views

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully equipped cottage with magnificent views all around. The approach track is an adventure in itself but well worth it upon arrival.

Well maintained with modern equipment throughout and convenient to explore the area around Ullswater and beyond. A variety of walks available direct from the door and the cottage is surrounded by interesting wildlife.

Very thorough information received from the helpful owner.

Car: recommended

High Bield is a rural property up on the fell above the village of Hartsop in the heart of the scenic Lake District. The views from from the house are outstanding. Footpaths pass by the house so it's easy to spend a week walking without even taking the car.
