Apartment in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales - Country outlook within easy reach of town and a short drive to Pembrokeshire's lovely beaches.

These stunning apartments are within a newly converted and refurbished Country House - now renamed "Holyland Garden Apartments" (formerly Holyland Country Manor Hotel). The conversation provides all modern fittings in the kitchen and bathrooms whilst preserving the character of this lovely Georgian building. Both "The Firs" and "The Oaks" have a large open plan living rooms, with flat screen TV and Wi fi and with lovely oak fitted kitchens with island units. The huge sash windows overlook the garden where you can watch the birds feeding at the table as well as the naughty squirrel who usually takes the nuts first in the mornings. The grounds have a pathway to the nature reserve and woodland beyond. There is a picnic and barbeque area for you to use or just sit and relax. Within the apartments are 2 good sized well furnished bedrooms, a twin bedroom and a double bedroom with en suite bathroom, plus a family shower room (The Firs) and family full bathroom (The Firs). The Firs has an en suite bathroom to the double bedroom and the Twin Bedroom has en suite in "The Firs". Both have washing machines and dryers and a dishwasher. We do ask that smokers only smoke outside the property and happily accept children over 6 years old - please supervise children at all times especially when playing in the gardens.

About the Owner

The owners are a semi retired couple who live in Pembrokeshire and enjoy many winter months in Carvoeiro. We have many friends in Pembroke, especially since running a small restaurant before retirement. Maurice was born and bred here in what is a small and friendly community. Christine also ran a villa rental company specialising in Carvoeiro for fifteen years and many of her owners and contacts in Carvoeiro have become good friends too. So, of course, we feel equally at home in either location. We both love walking the coast paths, eating out and exploring generally. We love "outdoor living" when possible and our two homes give us plenty of that. We are so, so lucky to be able to share our time in these lovely surroundings.

Charming Georgian lodge to explore Pembrokeshire

Lovely space in a charming converted Georgian style building. The open plan kitchen/lounge is a real feature and it was easy to spend time there watching the view, the wildlife, the bees and birds and everything else. Good to have access to the wildlife reserve at the bottom of the garden too.

The owners were very friendly and always on hand if required.

It was a great location to explore Pembrokeshire in general.

Another wonderful stay

We've just had another wonderful stay in this great apartment, for two weeks this year instead of one. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is!

It's spacious, really well equipped and brilliantly located. It's a 15 min walk, or very quick drive into Pembroke, and within easy reach of all the lovely beaches and wonderful walks on this part of the coast. It's also easy to get to the bridge over the Cleddau to explore further north into Fishguard or St David's. There are pubs galore (worth pre-booking dinner in the busy summer season) and we really enjoyed a more up-market meal at the Llamphey Hall hotel.

And no rain for two weeks - something of a record!

Enjoyable stay

Very nice apartment with newly done kitchen and bathrooms and new carpets throughout. We were a little disappointed with the outside appearance on arrival but understand the owners are still in the process of renovation. The bedrooms were a little bland and dark. New lighter bedlinen would make a huge difference. Also found the kitchen utensils etc lacking( not enough cooking pans etc) Lovely walk from the garden through the woods to Pembroke - a lovely little town with the castle and lots of delightful tea rooms and restaurants. Had a good meal at The Kings Arms. Would recommend the area - lots to explore.

Christine and Maurice are lovely people. They were there to show us round when we arrived and were around quite a lot during the week. Milk in the huge fridge and tea and coffee to start us off!

I was a bit disappointed with only 3 stars, a little surprised that you found a lack of utensils (4 saucepans, 3 fry pans, 2 roasting pans is usually enough) and do wish you had phoned me as I am only too glad to bring anything extra that is required. Yes, improvements to the grounds are on-going as you mention - I have now, at last, sorted out the central rockery!!! I am glad you enjoyed your holiday and the area.

The Oaks.....

Location; spot on!!....superbly located for the beaches in South Pembrokeshire and also the more inland attractions - and North Pembrokeshire with its equally stunning beaches....Pembroke itself is superb with its amazing castle....you can actually walk into the town through the woods...

The Apartment; Recently refurbished property to a very high standard. So much so it became a pleasure to spend time in it as it is so spacious.Set in wonderful wooded grounds...The Oaks (ground floor) I feel is the better option (getting picky now!!)....as the french doors open up onto the patio over looking the BBQ area.....This property is superb!!.......just let us all make a deal....tell no one about it!!.....our little secret!!...lol...Thanks Christine and Maurice.....

Clean yes...immaculate....the pictures do not actually do the property favours....hard to believe but the actual property is better than the pics.....I would recommend...highly!!......

Lovely apartment in a beautiful setting

This apartment is one of the best we've stayed in. It's clean, light, bright, peaceful and airy and equipped with everything you could need. The drying racks in the large family bathroom were particularly useful for wetsuits and wet macs on the one rainy day we had.

It's a 15 minute walk down in to Pembroke itself, and we found Williams the coffee shop was great for a late breakfast, coffee or cakes. We found the best pub food in Pembroke at the Watermans' Arms down on the pond behind the castle. Other than that, the Stackpole Inn at Stackpole is great for Sunday lunch (if you book in advance!), Plantagenet in Tenby is always an experience, the Carew Arms at Carew does decent pub grub, and the restaurant at The Lamphey Hall Hotel in Lamphey is lovely if you fancy somewhere a bit more upmarket.

There are stunning walks wherever you go around this coast line. A gentle introduction is the walk around the lily ponds at Bosherston, and around the headland at Manorbier is great too. Our favourite beach is Broadhaven South, just along from the lily ponds, although Angle is great for rock pooling at low tide, and you can't beat Freshwater West on a windy day for spectacular waves. All of these are within a 15-20 minute drive of this apartment - we can't wait to go back and explore more!

Location

From the Owner

This building used to be an hotel, had closed down and I just fell for the grounds with the trees surrounding the grass with so many wild flowers, birds and butterflies. It's great that it adjoins the Pembroke nature reserve and the plan is to put in a gate that leads into the woods. The building is special - its Grade 2 listed and I wanted to restore as much as possible and convert into high spec apartments with tenants and visitors to enjoy the grounds and natural wildflowers and wildlife around. Everyone locally knows Holyland (pronounced Hollyland in these parts) and many have memories of christenings, weddings and functions being held here in the days of Holyland Country House Hotel as it was then known. Now there is a new life here but the wonderful atmosphere continues.

Great for walkers, nature lovers, surfers and bird watchers.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach at Freshwater East is around 5 miles and the popular seaside town of Tenby is around 10 miles. Other beaches within reach are the quiet beaches of Barafundel, Swanlake Bay are also within easy reach, as is the well know long wilder beach of Freshwater West known for its rolling coasters and laverbread hut. Pembroke town has a tidal millpond with many ducks, herons and swans and even otters are spotted here.

Travel:

For foreign visitors, Cardiff is our nearest airport. The property is great for visitors from Ireland as we are just 3 miles from the Pembroke ferry terminal. We have welcomed visitors, from USA, Spain, Turkey and Germany

Distances:

Pembroke town centre is under a mile, the county town of Haverfordwest around 8 miles. Numerous beaches (and coastal towns and villages) all within a 5-10 mile radius, including the well know Tenby with its pretty harbour and huge south beach.

Further Details:

Pembroke has plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, takeaways (3 fish & chips shops) and bars. There are several banks including Barclays, Natwest and Lloyds, a good supermarket, greengrocer and butcher and all the usual arts and crafts. There is a WI market held in the town hall on a Thursday. Stop off at the information centre on the Commons (big car park) and find out about all local activities and places to visit.

From the Owner

At the moment we don't stay at Holyland Gardens but live in a bungalow 5 minutes away. The renovating and conversion has been a long time in the making (over 4 years) and we are still back and forth most days putting final touches here and there and gradually reclaiming the garden. See the Carvoeiro details too - Christine just can't keep her hands out of the soil. Our plan is maybe to move here in a year or so and enjoy the garden and keep adding to its charm. We would enjoy the spacious rooms in the south facing ground floor apartment - wonderful for family parties and the ceiling will take a huge, huge Christmas tree too. We hope others will enjoy these individual apartments - they are all different and each has a charm of its own.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: This is a character property, newly converted and with new modern facilities. There is a double bedroom with patio doors leading to the terrace and views over the grounds and twin bedroom with the benefit of an en suite bathroom. A separate family bathroom has both bath and separate shower. The lounge dining room/ kitchen is very spacious and light with huge sash windows giving lovely views across the grounds to the nature reserve beyond. Everything is nicely and comfortably furnished with good comfy memory foam beds. In all a superb apartment. The beaches of Pembrokeshire, including Manorbier, Tenby, Angle Bay and the world famous Barafundel beach are just a short drive. Our nearest beach is Freshwater East just a 5/10 minute drive. Pembroke town is easily accessible by car or on foot and provides all your needs. Bigger supermarkets are 3 miles away by car at Pembroke Dock. Children over 6 years very welcome - sorry the property is not suitable for very young children. Outside: The extensive grounds are available for guests to enjoy. There is direct access to the Pembroke nature reserve with its lovely walks around the ponds where you can watch water birds, and maybe other wildlife. Rare butterflies and numerous birds including woodpeckers and woodcocks as well as buzzards overhead and squirrels among the trees have been spotted within the grounds of Holyland Gardens. Woodpeckers and nuthatches have visited the bird-table viewed from the dining room and the squirrel is a daily visitor! Guests are welcome to use the garden for barbecues and picnics using the rustic seating provided. Wild daffodils, primroses and bluebells bloom amongst the trees and wildlife is encouraged. Spot the buzzards circling overhead or sit outside in the evening to see bats feeding. Please note that garden work and facilities are on going - we are constantly making improvements for your enjoyment. There is ample parking to the front of the building.
