The Croft is a large detached holiday home, that was built in the early 20th. century. It nestles in a prime position in the heart of the attractive village of Scalby, just to the north of the seaside resort of Scarborough. Set in half an acre of mature gardens, and approached via a private road, The Croft offers spacious family accommodation. Scalby lies on the border of the North York Moors National Park, only a mile or two north of Scarborough. Surrounded by wonderful countryside, it is an ideal base for walkers, cyclists,

and others to explore the region.

Notes on accommodation: The Croft is an older property, and the decor, fittings etc. are in keeping with this. Interested parties should not expect anything ultra-modern. It is comfortable and adequately equipped and furnished, rather than luxurious. The standard of the accommodation is 3-star and prices reflect this. Outside: A large garden of nearly an acre, with lawns to front, side and rear. Many mature trees and shrubs. A parking area within the grounds for up to 3 cars. Garden tables, with chairs. Barbeque. A clothes line in the side garden. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Beds are made up ready for use. A towel is in each bathroom, but guests should bring towels for personal use. The house is cleaned between lets. Guests are asked to leave the house in a reasonable condition, as time between lets is often limited. Other: A sitting-room, with music-centre, piano, writing-desk, most suitable for quiet, relaxing activity,such as reading, listening to music, writing letters. Dining-room, with seating for 6 - 8. Another table and 4 chairs in the adjacent sitting-room.

Clearly, they were aware before booking that The Croft does not offer the high standards of a modern, up-to-the-minute house. Instead, it offers space and comfort, for those on a modest budget.

First impression was wow as we went in it was like home and felt very comfortable plenty of space couldn't ask for anything more best by far the best holiday home we have stayed at and will be returning thank you simon for such a lovely stay

Excellent Quirky House

This wonderfully quirky house was exactly as described - not designer chic but had everything our family party of 9 (aged from 8 months to 64) needed. Brilliant location - loved it! Would come back!

Quirky and Characterful House

We booked this house for a New Year's Eve celebration and reunion for 8 adults and 2 children. It was a little difficult to find at first as it's tucked away at the end of a drive just off the High Street but this also meant that it was private with plenty of garden space for the children to run around in and explore.

The kitchen is lovely and warm and a great place to hang around. It's very well equipped and we managed to cook up 2 meals to feed everyone. The additions of a few seasonings and oil leftover from previous guests were very welcome and saved us buying these items. The rooms are all large and comfortable. It can take the house a while to warm up in winter but with the Aga in the kitchen, there is always a warm room to sit in.

The large and airy TV room has plenty of board games to keep everyone entertained and we also enjoyed the extensive book selection.

The house is 30 minutes from Whitby and just 10 mins from Scarborough. There is a friendly pub within throwing distance, a local shop just round the corner, a more restaurant type pub 15 mins walk away, a Londis, a supermarket, a chemist and a bank all within walking distance. There are some lovely local walks too, particularly by the river.

The owner states that the house offers a basic and comfortable stay but I think that it offers more than this. If you want luxury and mod-cons then you'd stay in a hotel chain. This property offers character and we loved the quirkiness of it. It doesn't need updating as that would detract from the feel and homeliness of the place. As it is, we felt we could truly unwind and enjoy the house without being afraid to sit down in case we got dirt on the sofa. It's homely, large, comfortable and well equipped. Our extended group certainly appreciated it and the children were sad to leave. Thank you for a very memorable New Year week.

Family get-together

There were nine of us. The house had lots of room for everyone - a quiet lounge and a larger one, a dining room where we all managed to squeeze in, a big, well-equipped kitchen with an Aga. Had never used one before, so were relieved to know there was an electric oven as well. The bedrooms were fine and the beds comfortable. The kids loved the attic. The weather was cold and most of our group had come from much warmer parts of the world but the house kept us all warm and comfortable. We were able to visit local seaside towns and see a panto. Lovely big garden although the weather stopped us taking advantage of that. All in all, a good place for an extended family. Not too pristine, so we could relax and feel at home.

Comfortable atmospheric property

Being just my wife and myself plus our two dogs, The Croft was rather larger than what we actually needed for our first short break in the area however we liked the sound of it and the area and it was available for just the right number of days to suit our needs.

Aware that we would only be using a fraction of the accommodation wasn't a problem but we did make use of the large lounge, kitchen, dining room and the second lounge - where I was able to convince my wife that it was a wise move when we sold our old piano years ago!

After an initial "inspection" of the rest of the house - we closed the doors on the rooms we did not need.

The property is situated in what must be one of the nicest villages in the Scarborough area. As other reviewers have commented, there is a shop, pub (1 minute walk!!!!) and cafe plus hairdressers all on the doorstep.

The weather was generally fine during our stay and also (unknown to us at the time of booking) the Scalby Fair was about to commence. We are just sorry we weren't able to stay until the main event on the Saturday.

I agree with the owners comments regarding the decor of the house etc but feel a little more effort would ensure many more positive comments from others in the future.

The doorknob falling off the ensuite bathroom door was amusing but fortunate I was there to release my wife from what could have been a rather lonely protracted stay!

A few more curtain hooks as has already been suggested would smarten the place up a bit and make it appear more "loved".

The electric oven did eventually die having thrown up ERR08 on numerous occasions. I would expect by now a replacement has been found.

All in all a very satisfactory stay in a lovely part of the country and we will certainly make use of the rest of the rooms and bring the rest of the family next time we visit the area.
