Rural peace but near to so mich
A superbly located, well equipped and comfortable property, this was a fantastic find. Excellent value, great amenities, lots of attention to detail. A short drive to the forest, river Vendee swimming, supermarkets, great local wine cave, Fontenay-le-Comte shops and Château. We were three couples, but this would suit large families. Plenty to do indoors and out, cannot recommend this highly enough.

Summer in rural Vendee
As a diverse party - 4 senior citizens, one 13 year old, three infants under 4, two adults in their 30s - this property suited everyone. Safe play areas for the infants especially in the garden, games for the 13 year old downstairs, and a balcony overlooking the garden for enjoying breakfasts and evening meals/chats with a lovely view to Fontenay. There were many activities in the area - the Mervent Forest, Parc Pierre Brune, Open air swimming at Chassenon and we went to the beach at La Tranche-sur-mer twice. Early trips to the two Boulangeries provided all our breakfast needs whilst shopping in Fontenay-le-Comte at hypermarkets provided everything one needed. There was an immaculately comprehensive handbook in the residence detailing everything from where to locate spare light bulbs to what happens if one needed a hospital visit (fortunately, we didn't). This was a perfect family house which we enjoyed enormously in an area with plenty to do. The sun shone most days at 20-25 degrees but it was not oppressively hot. We all had a great time. Quiet, picturesque, exceptionally well provisioned for family fun
Our tribe of five (parents, 2 kids, grandparent) had a lovely stay in L'Orbrie. The village is very quiet, but very accessible to the town of Fontenay and the forests and lake of Mervent. The house is super - both practically and for the fun stuff. Practically, it's really five bedrooms, all well maintained and provided for, with a good kitchen and a fantastic balcony that's great to eat out on, overlooking the garden, forest and the spire of Fontenay's main church. Everything you need in terms of appliances etc. is well provided - there's even a French and and English TV and two sitting rooms. For the fun stuff there's table tennis, boules, board games, table football, bicycles, swings, a slide, fresh fruit in the orchard... what's not to love. We found this a great place to chill out in and a good base for walking, kayaking, wine tasting at the tiny winery in the next door village... generally pottering about enjoying a very relaxed and straightforward part of France.

Excellent property in great location
We would definitely recommend this house. It's fully equipped and in a very good location. Plenty to do locally; we enjoyed cycling and walking around the area and it's not too far from the coast either. Overall a great place to stay!

Lovely house with great gardens and large balcony
The house was clean, well equipped and felt very welcoming. We spent most of time in the garden or on the very large balcony, which had beautiful views of Fontenay Le Comte. Great location on the edge of Mervent Forest, with it's walks & lovely villages and within easy striking distance of the coast. The design of the house allowed different parties to retire at the end of the day to their own section of the house. Handy if different age groups and pets are taken on holiday. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys rural France.

About the host

We are a married couple living in England, but with a lifelong love of France. Buying a property in France together was something we always wanted to do, to build new happy family memories and a love of the French culture and lifestyle for our two young children, as well as loving it ourselves!

Why they chose this property

We quickly narrowed down the area for our search when considering buying our French home. We wanted somewhere within reasonable drive of the northern ferry ports, but with better weather than Brittany or Normandy. The Vendee, with its warm climate, lush forests, beautiful villages, friendly people, and epic beaches, was an easy winner. The area around Fontenay le Comte is set back from the main tourist drag of the coastline, and just felt somehow more real and 'French' to us. We love being so close to the forest, and the long summer evenings on the south facing terrace with views across the fields to the spire of Fontenay Cathedral sold it to us!

What makes this property unique

The house stood out for us, as it is set back in its own grounds with orchard, and a lovely bike ride from the amazing lakes, rivers, walking and cycling in Mervent Forest. We have plenty of living space in the house even when our extended families come to visit, and just love the views from the sunny raised terrace. It's just great for the kids, who hang out in the library or downstairs rooms when they want some space playing table tennis or babyfoot, and spend hours playing games in the gardens. The historic town of Fontenay is only 3km away with all the facilities we could wish for, and yet it feels so peaceful, and with the beach only 45mins we can give the kids (and ourselves!) a bit of everything!
