La Residence au Verger (Orchard House) is a bright and spacious holiday home, built on the site of a former vineyard, and with its own orchard, fully enclosed gardens, and wonderful open countryside views over fields and forest. Peaceful village setting, local cafe/restaurant 5 minutes walk (Fri-Sun). Main town, historic Fontenay le Comte, 3km (only 13 mins by bike), with many cafes and restaurants, shops and parks and beautiful historic buildings.

The sunny raised terrace is perfect for outdoor dining /barbecues or reading in the sun with a glass of good local wine (local vineyard in Pissotte, 5 mins). The library has a wide selection of books, games etc. There is UK satellite TV and French TV, and a variety of outdoor games (boules, croquet, tennis racquets etc). Downstairs there is darts, table football and a table tennis table, and a junior snooker table. The garden has a children's play area with swings & slide. High chair and cot available. The surrounding area is ideal for active family holidays, or relaxing and enjoying the countryside: the fabulous Mervent Forest is on the edge of the village, with wooded valleys and lakes, boating, swimming and miles of walking, cycle paths and fishing. The forest also has a zoo and children's adventure park.

We are a married couple living in England, but with a lifelong love of France. Buying a property in France together was something we always wanted to do, to build new happy family memories and a love of the French culture and lifestyle for our two young children, as well as loving it ourselves!

Why Caroline Chartres chose Vendee

We quickly narrowed down the area for our search when considering buying our French home. We wanted somewhere within reasonable drive of the northern ferry ports, but with better weather than Brittany or Normandy. The Vendee, with its warm climate, lush forests, beautiful villages, friendly people, and epic beaches, was an easy winner. The area around Fontenay le Comte is set back from the main tourist drag of the coastline, and just felt somehow more real and 'French' to us. When we walked into the local bar and asked the bartender what she thought of the area, we were introduced to all the locals sitting along the bar as well, and ended up chatting for over an hour, we felt immediately at home.

What makes this house unique

The house stood out for us, as it is set back in its own grounds with orchard, and a lovely bike ride from the amazing lakes, rivers, walking and cycling in Mervent Forest. We have plenty of living space in the house even when our extended families come to visit, and just love the views from the sunny raised terrace. It's just great for the kids, who hang out in the library or downstairs rooms when they want some space playing table tennis or babyfoot, and spend hours playing games in the gardens. The historic town of Fontenay is only 3km away with all the facilities we could wish for, and yet it feels so peaceful, and with the beach only 45mins we can give the kids (and ourselves!) a bit of everything!

We had a wonderfully relaxing time & a week was not enough to do everything we wanted! The walk up to Pissotte is very pleasant & the boulangerie & creperie make it worthwhile! "A lovely well equipped & spacious house in a beautiful area. We spent some very comfortable days just relaxing & enjoyed the local wine from the cave in Pissotte. Fontenay le comte is lovely - we visited the church, chateau & local swimming pool. The kids enjoyed the zoo & kayaking at Base de loisirs near Mervent. Also enjoyed a crepe meal in the beautiful setting of th Chateau de la Citardiere. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable 2 weeks - thank-you." Caroline & family/friends, Middlesex

Notes on accommodation: The accommodation is spread over 2 floors. In the typical style of the region, the main floor is the first floor, accessed by stairs to the front door. Here 4 bedrooms, the family bathroom, 1 ensuite, library, kitchen, and living/dining areas can be found. The raised terrace is accessed by patio doors from the kitchen and patio doors from the dining room. On the ground floor is the 5th bedroom with ensuite, a small games room, outdoor games cupboards, and a downstairs kitchen/utility room, which we also use as relaxing additional living space (table and sofa, as well as fridge for keeping drinks cool adjacent to the games room!). The downstairs could act as a self contained unit if required, with double bedroom, ensuite and some kitchen facilities, eg to give privacy to grandparents from younger family. The garages have a table tennis table. Off season there are some logs stored in the wood store in case you want to light the open fire. Outside: The gardens are fully enclosed and gated. The north gardens include the long front drive and orchard area, with the south garden, overlooked by the raised terrace, facing onto open farmland views, generally arable but occasionally with horses in the fields. There is a neighbouring home to the east of the gardens, and an area of new build properties to the west. There is dining furniture and a retractable awning for shade on the terrace, and a smaller table with shady umbrella. A small barbeque is available for use on the terrace. Utility Room: The downstairs kitchen/utility has washing machine, tumble drier, additional fridge, sink, cupboards, kettle, toaster, iron and ironing board, and extra space with table and sofa which makes it an extra room for living if required. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels (one bath towel per person) and linen are included, and changed at the end of each week. The property will be cleaned for your arrival, also included in the price Other: The library is stocked with books, as well as some games. There is a TV with DVD and Video players, sofa and chairs. Downstairs there is a small games room with table football and darts, and the large garage includes a table tennis table

Excellent property in great location

We would definitely recommend this house. It's fully equipped and in a very good location. Plenty to do locally; we enjoyed cycling and walking around the area and it's not too far from the coast either. Overall a great place to stay!

Lovely house with great gardens and large balcony

The house was clean, well equipped and felt very welcoming. We spent most of time in the garden or on the very large balcony, which had beautiful views of Fontenay Le Comte.

Great location on the edge of Mervent Forest, with it's walks & lovely villages and within easy striking distance of the coast.

The design of the house allowed different parties to retire at the end of the day to their own section of the house. Handy if different age groups and pets are taken on holiday.

Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys rural France.

Everything you need for holiday in France

I've stayed at this property a number of times and always look forward to coming back. Situated in the heart of Vendee, and just an hour from the coast it is the perfect location to explore the region and enjoy the mix of coastal spots and inland attractions. The house is well equipped with everything you would need including bikes, games and a library stacked with books and DVDs (and now free wifi for those that can't live without it!). It's big enough to accommodate families and still provide space and quiet when you want it. BBQ on the terrace is recommended! Ideally you need a car to get the most from this type of holiday but equally you are just 5 minutes from Mervent Forest and a short walk to Pissot (can recommend Pissot vinery and the crepe cafe) and the town of Fontenay.

Merveilleux séjour

Nous avons passé une agréable semaine entre amis dans cette maison spacieuse et très bien équipée.

Les repas pris sur la terrasse ont été agréables et les apéritifs dans le jardin furent des moments privilégiés.

La propriétaire , Caroline , est à l'écoute de ses locataires: elle m'a envoyé de la documentation pour préparer la visite de la région , elle s'informe pour savoir si tout se passe bien .

Nous avons visité l'abbaye de Maillezais et celle de Nieuls sur l'Autise , fait une ballade en barque sur le marais , visité la Chaboterie qui raconte la guerre de Vendée , Vouvant très joli village .Tous ces sites valent le détour , nous les avons beaucoup appréciés .

Nous avons été enchantés de notre séjour et nous recommandons cette location .

Très agréable séjour

La maison est fonctionnelle et bien équipée . Rien ne manque pour le confort . De plus Caroline , la propriétaire est à l'écoute de ses locataires et nous a donné des conseils et envoyé des brochures pour préparer notre visite de la région.

Nous étions un groupe de 8 amis et avons apprécié l'espace spacieux de la maison.

Nous avons pris nos repas sur la terrasse : c'était très agréable .

Les apéritifs dans le jardin furent aussi des moments privilégiés .

La région vaut la visite : nous avons fait une ballade en barque sur le marais, visité l'abbaye de Maillezais, celle de Nieuls sur l'Autise.

Le domaine de la Chabotterie vaut le détour pour tout savoir sur la guerre de Vendée et notre visite du château de Talmont nous a beaucoup plu avec son spectacle de fauconnerie .

Bref , nous avons passé une semaine très agréable et nous recommandons vivement cette charmante location
