Ancient Stone Villa Surrounded by Luxuriant Garden Rich Of Succulent Plants

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Sep-2016
Villa in Scopello, Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Peaceful Location On Hill Of Scopello 5 Minute To The Beach

Ancient stone and wood farmhouse built in 1700 AD surrounded by a wonderful garden rich of succulent plants and olive and almond trees. The villa is independent, furnished with antiques and located in a typical rural village on the hill of Scopello. The area is cool even in summer and the house has perimeter walls one meter wide so you never feel hot. The villa is very close to the natural reserve of "Zingaro" where you enjoy the contact with nature meeting in the wild rabbits, porcupines, owls, hawks, foxes, sheep and cows. You'll be able to swim into one of the most striking place of sicily: the “tonnara” of scopello with its marvelous stacks and in the evening taste the very good local seafood and meat with the best wines of sicily. Otherwise you will visit the most important archaeological sites in the sicily: segesta, selinunte, mothia or take a trip to palermo, monreale, trapani, erice, marsala and the egadi isles (favignana, levanso and marettimo). At the end you can remain at home and enjoy the greatest quiet, walking among almond trees and succulent plants or swinging under a secular olive tree.

atmospheric stone cottage located in the hills above the bays of Guidaloca and Scopello

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of five (kids 4,7 and 9) and had a wonderful holiday here. As other reviews suggest, what makes the place is the hospitality of the charming hosts, Rosalba and Fabio, who live in an adjoining house. The cottage is as advertised, more spacious and comfortable even than the photos suggest. The bedrooms are downstairs and remain cool even when it's hot outside, and there is abundant and peaceful outdoor space for lounging around reading under the shade of olive trees, enjoying the exotic landscape of cactae and bbqs in the evening. The village of Visicari has an interesting history, left to ruin after the war and then renovated by a hippy community in the 60s. Today the little enclave is home to a few holiday homes, some of them cave houses set into the hillside. The otherworldly feel is accentuated by the possibility of collecting drinking water from a nearby spring and navigating through local goat herds to access the village. A car is essential, but nothing is too far and there are many small coves and beaches to explore nearby. We loved Mazzo di Sciacca with its clear water for snorkelling and jumping rocks, as well as the pretty pebbled bay of Guidaloca. We stayed pretty close to home, but still enjoyed visits to nearby temple ruins at Segesta and the stunning medieval hilltop village of Erice. There is a supermarket on the way into Scopello, full of local and gourmet treats, which is more than enough to meet shopping needs, and the nearest conventional supermarket is located some 20 minutes away at Castellamare. Scopello is lovely for an evening wander with little craft stalls and has a couple of good restaurants, gelateria and terraces. We especially enjoyed the informal atmosphere and wonderful local pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas at Trattoria Peppe e Nino's in nearby Busato Pallizolo. Thank you Rosalba and Fabio for a wonderful two weeks!

A memorable holiday withutterly lovely people

  • 5 of 5

The setting, the garden and the incredible history and culture around were all great....but what really made this holiday for us was the quality of the hosts. Living next door they were not too present...but when we needed help (and we did!) they were fantastic.

Views, food, swimming in the sea...all was great. We would return to this spot...thank you

secluded, quiet, perfect peace with wonderful view

  • 5 of 5

Such an amazing island. The property was lovely, beautiful gardens with secluded areas in the shade for those hot days. I loved sitting in the comfy outside armchairs or on the sun lounger area just listening to the wind in the trees and taking in the smells. Beautiful area ith lovely beaches and coves. Clear waters with an abundance of fish. Segesta, Monreale andErice are a must see. We loved the local market shop and fruit and veg shop and you can get water at the spring down the road. The food was amazing, we enjoyed local pizza, sea food and wild boar along with lovely Sicilian wine and beer. Rosalba , Fabio and their two girls were wonderful and the children spent lots of time playing together, our two girls did not want to come home. Neither did we, we were utterly enchanted by the place and would love to come back.

A real taste of Sicily

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the the house of Rosalba.....and we were so happy to find that it was even better than we remembered.

The house was spotlessly clean on our arrival, the gardens well maintained with the addition of some new landscaping and a great swing!

The location of the house is perfect, very quiet and private with great access to the beautiful beaches and surrounding countryside.

There is a good market close by that boasts fresh local produce that would delight any"foodie". A welcome addition to the market is the bar run by Franco where you can have a coffee and delicious pastry to start your day.

Dinner in nearby Scopello is a must, try the Bar Nettuno for great fish dishes and cocktails.

There is so much to see in this part of Sicily that we were glad we had returned, the beautiful town of Monreale with it's Byzantine cathedral and cloister is amazing.

Of course our visit to Visicari was made special because of the family themselves. People say that the Sicilians are warm and welcoming, this is so true! Rosalba, Fabio, Federica and Beatrice are very special! If you stay at this house you will fall in love with Siciliy and with this family, they will give you great advice, amazing directions and the warmest reception, enjoy, we did!

Wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautifully located property with a wonderful garden with lots of shade (and sunny options too!). The property was well equipped and Rosalba and Fabio were very kind and eager to give advice or help without being intrusive. Their response to emails and payments was very quick and efficient. We were torn each day between eating out in the evening or cooking in the BBQ area using the excellent produce from Market Scopello. The beaches nearby are lovely and we also travelled further afield to visit such places as Segesta, Selinunte and Monreale and the salt lagoons at Trapani. It was always good to return to this lovely peaceful house away from the hot and busy coast. We would definitely recommend it.

Blissfull

  • 5 of 5

All our trepidations of visiting an unknown holiday place and house disappeared as soon as we arrived !Fabio and Rosalba and the children gave us a wonderful welcome, showed us around the beautifully situated house which is in a very peaceful ,tranquil situation. The house itself is kept very well, clean ,cool and comfortable. We are a family of 5,and our teenage son had a very comfortable double sofa bed to himself! The garden provides wonderful outside space for meals and BBQ's,not to forget the luxury of the outside hot shower! The beaches are beautiful be it pebbly, rocky coves near Scopello,or sandy beaches along Castellamara bay.Plenty to see Erice was magnificent,as was Segesta and Monreale cathedral.A car is a must and driving is not for the faint hearted. We absolutely loved Sicily,it is a spectacular island, loads to see and do,great pizzas and ice cream! The temperature also was very pleasant, very do-able.We had some very sociable, special evenings where Fabio and Rosalba and the children joined us along with the Lemoncello!I would highly recommend this place if you enjoy being away from the touristy highlife! Its set quite high up on the mountainside amongst the local life, very accessible by car,it takes about 50 minutes to get to the Palermo airport.Scopello itself was just lovely to visit for an evening outing. We loved our Sicilian experience !!
