About the Owner

Richard and Gina have lived in the Lake District since 1984 and enjoy all the outdoor activities that the Park has to offer, sailing, climbing, mountain walking and breath taking scenery. Richard works as a physio in Penrith and Gina is an artist with her studio in the village of Dockray, sounds very grand but its a corrugated shed! The locals call it "The Studio Shed". We planted and have nurtured a 25 acre woodland ..its now 19 years old and it looks magnificent. a great place to walk through on way to the village pub or round for an energetic walk. The Aira beck flows through it, and in summer its a wonderful place for wild skinny dipping.

And we enjoy sharing our wood with our guests and friends. and once a year we put on a mini music festival, probably the highest and smallest music festival in the UK! all donations go to charity.

The wood is bursting with nature, roe and red deer, red squirrels, otters in the beck, easy to write but its true! and numerous bird species.

Gina has just completed an art course at Leith School of Art, the effects of this course are sprinkled around Crookwath, many of the paintings are for sale. Just Ask.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Angle a mirror behind the bath taps and open the window for an "alfresco" bathing experience! The views are stunning here!"

"Just occasionally you find a place that makes your heart feel "GLAD" - and this is such a place - thank you."

"Lucy's Wood is quite magical and an inspiration to us all. I think all of us who visit should go home and plant a tree. I know we will. The world needs them and Lucy's message will spread."

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Crookwath: it is a beautiful place. Lucy's Wood and barn, the pool and the swing, are fantastic touches which we have enjoyed using."

Lovely cottage in a beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It is in a lovely location with many walks directly from the cottage (although a reasonable drive from "civilisation" if that is a requirement). We usually stay in the Ambleside area and very much enjoyed exploring more of Ullswater which is a bit quieter and feels slightly more remote (in a good way).

The cottage was warm, very well equipped and had a wonderful atmosphere. Beds were very comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed in it - we didn't use the sitting room much as the kitchen was so comfortable. The bathrooms were good and had plenty of hot water. The homemade scones left for us were delicious and I have never seen such a beautiful flower arrangement left in a holiday cottage - thank you so much. We were very sad to leave and hope to return again sometime.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your comments, delighted that you picked up on the cosy and warm atmosphere of Crookwath. We try very hard to offer a home from home experience, special flower arrangements arise from my wife's artistic talents. Home baking is Richards domain if you are lucky to stay when he's baking! Hope to see you again one day

Beautiful cottage in idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

Crookwath Cottage was the perfect meeting place for our annual reunion with my brother and his wife who live in Hawaii. There were six of us altogether, plus my other brother's flat-coated retriever. We ate, drank, cooked, laughed and walked, starting and ending each day around the kitchen table basking in the Aga's warmth. The views and walks from the cottage are second to none, the Royal Oak with an excellent menu of home-cooked food is welcoming and well within staggering distance. The owners were away when we stayed but emailed everything we needed, and their delightful neighbour was there to greet us and ensure all was well. Comfortable beds, good towels, ample cooking equipment (including sharp knives!) and lashings of hot water made us feel as though we were spoiled guests rather than holiday renters. Lucy's Wood is a special place, and will stay with us.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for such a lovely review about our cottage AND we didn't even meet you.! We feel ourselves that we are very privileged to live in such a stunning place -even though at times the elements can be wild and windy! And we very much enjoy sharing it with others and enjoy making their holiday at Crookwath as happy and smooth running as possible. If you come again I hope we will be there to welcome you. With best wishes from Gina and Richard.

Fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely fantastic location and facilities. As seasoned travellers, we knew exactly what we wanted and this cottage we certainly could not falter. Excellent comms from Richard the owner from initial enquiry to leaving. This cottage is home from home, very clean and with all the facilities you could ask for.

Would definitely recommend this cottage with all its additional charm ie beck, barn, Lucy's Wood. We will definitely be back!

Thank you.

The most restful spot in England!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful relaxing and restful place. We could switch off from the real world completely...or maybe Crookwath IS actually the real world! Walks straight out of the door, easy reach of the Lakes and Keswick and other local attractions, The House...not really a cottage...is a VERY well appointed home from home, where we restored our spirits and recharged our batteries. Gina is an artist, and her pictures adorn the walls, and she and Richard are the most welcoming of hosts. We loved our visit and can completely recommend Crookwath.

Thank you

"Back for our 3rd visit. Crookwath is our home from home, welcomed by its warmth, the Aga, lit wood burner on arrival & Richard's homemade Biscuits. The most homliest cottage we have ever stayed in. It suits us all, some of us prefer reading and painting & I can walk the fells direct from the front door. We've enjoyed using the BBQ at the Barn in Lucy's Wood and dared go wild swimming in Gina's "special" place in Aira Beck. We just love the tranquility and peace of this place, not a sound apart from nature. We've been car free all week...just no need to go anywhere, this is a heavenly place."

Location

From the Owner

Crookwath cottage is probably one of the quietest and highest locations anywhere. It is set at 1250 feet or 381m high in a remote mountain valley above Ullswater. And it is down a cul de sac so it is unlikely you would ever hear a car engine apart from the postman. We enjoy living in a place where one can walk directly from the doorstep and out onto the fells and not have to get into a car. There are enough places to walk to from the front door step to last weeks.

An opportunity to live in a traditional 300 year old stone long house, with beams an original range that was used up until the 1960's for heating the water, bread oven, and range ovens plus the open fire for cooking. Inside it is full of homely comforts, a warm Aga to greet you, and a wood burning fire, 2 bathrooms shared by 3 bedrooms. With over 600 books and 60 paintings there is really no reason to venture out! sculptures dotted around the cottage created by Richard and Gina. Our unique 25 acre wood is utterly beautiful with the Aira Beck flowing through it and a traditional stone barn in the center with a BBQ area beside it, and many other attractions to draw you round the wood.
