Overview

About the property

Guest house, Bed, Breakfast, overlooking Calpe, Northern Costa Blanca. Located Amongst pine & palm trees yet only 10 minutes drive from the beaches and town

NO ONLINE PAYMENT REQUIRED. WE ONLY ASK FOR PAYMENT WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT OUR VILLA, ENSURING THAT YOUR FINANCES ARE SAFE (to keep prices down we do not want to enter into this company's payment scheme which would mean you paying more for your holiday).

The mountain above the train station of Calpe overlooking the town and the Mediterranean sea, is known as Olta. Travelling up the hillside through pine, orange, fig and almond trees and after passing the areas of Monte Olta and Oltamar you arrive at our villa. The drive up from the station which is just off the main north/south N332 carriageway, takes about 7 minutes but once here the views are incredible (as are most in the area). Our villa was modernised 6 years ago and the interior decor has been finished to a high standard. Our villa comprises 2 floors (and a basement garage) on one side. An indoor heated pool and upstairs covered terrace (with mandatory BBQ) comprise the other. Your accommodation is on the middle floor and has a separate entrance door for privacy. It is also on the same level as the heated (28/30°) indoor pool (April to Oct) to which you have use during your stay. The villa is in a quiet area of the countryside, good for relaxing, walking and viewing the stars on clear evenings.

About David Clark

We are Dave & Liz Clark. Married in 1974. No kids so retired to Spain 12 years ago having lived and worked for 35 years in the west country, North Somerset. We love this area. It's very green and has a good water and electricity supply. Similar to the area in the UK we left behind but with a much better climate. Shorter winters, fewer grey skies and less rain! Most days we wake up to blue skies. We like to interact with Spanish people here and try to speak and practice the local language whenever possible.

David Clark purchased this villa in 2004

Why David Clark chose Benissa

We always wanted to live by the sea but England can be cold with too short a summer. We always came to the Med for our holidays (Spain, Portugal, Greece) but hated that last day when it was time to go home. Just like Shirley Valentine we promissed ourselves that one day we wouldn't have to. So, here we are, on the hillside overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean. We are 10 minutes drive away from the bustle of the town, far enough to get away from the crowds but close enough to pop in for the shops, restaurants and beaches. This area is very green (we get our share of rain) and can drink water straight out of the tap. Having travelled north and south on our holidays for many years, we think this is the best stretch of the Spanish coast.

What makes this villa unique

We have an indoor saltwater pool. Outdoor pools are used for 4 months (max). We use ours for 8 as it's heated to 28 degrees, April to Oct. The area is quiet and we know most of the villa owners around us. Some are holiday homes but quite a few are lived in full time so we are not short of neighbours or people to talk to. We have ample parking and little traffic. We have beautiful walks around 'our' mountain straight out of the door and lots of country restaurants that a 'beach' tourist wouldn't find. On this hillside we are also 2 degrees cooler than down in the town (great for the summer months). For the winter we have an Aga cooker in the kitchen and a log fire. We have internet in the house. Easy access to main roads, motorway, and a local train north to Denia, south to Benidorm/Alicante.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Your bedroom is situated on the middle floor of the property. You have separate access via a front door. We can provide you with a key if you are having a late night should you wish. Bedroom measures 5 metres by 4 metres, and contains a queen size bed, 3 seater sofa. Tea making facilities and unlimited cold drinks supplied. Although there is no air conditioning there is a large overhead fan (3 speed) for warmer months and central heating radiators if you stay during winter months. Plenty of wardrobe space with hangers. Ensuite bathroom is 4 m x 4 m and has a large, tiled walk-in shower with tiled seating, marble wash basin with big mirror. A Bosch washing machine is provided for your use. Electric points for shaver/hair dryer. We provide bath and beach towels. Both bedroom and bathroom windows face east towards the Mediterranean. Breakfast of your choice, continental, cereal or cooked, on the terrace with that magnificent view of the Med. Your accommodation is non smoking. Outside: Pool is private, indoor and exclusive for your use during your stay. We heat it to 28/30 degrees (April to October). It measures 4 metres x 9 metres. They say that the sun shines here for over 300 days a year. They're right. So why not come 'out of season', catch some gentle sun, and swim before and after those two hot months of July and August, when the beaches and the town can be crowded. Or, have a swim in the evening after you've been out for the day. March, April, May, September, October and even November are still sunny and warm months in comparrison to the UK. Our villa has an open aspect with plenty of places to sit around the garden and take in the views. There are many flowers, and palms for shade. We also have a lovely covered terrace, upstairs, where we serve you your breakfast. This is also where we have the barbeque. If you would prefer to stay in for the evening and eat 'at home' this can be arranged (fresh local fish, chicken/pork or salad etc. your choice).

Perfect stay in welcoming atmosphere

For everyone who’s looking for a relaxed stay with one of the most magnificent views on Calpe, this is the right place. Dave and Liz are very welcoming and help you wherever possible. The surrounding invites for hikes or trip to the beach. Car required.

3&1/2⭐️ Villa on mountain above Calpe

  • 3 of 5

Arrived early evening & were met by Dave & Liz who guided us up the mountain road to their villa- you wouldn't find it otherwise as it's quite a twisting, un-lit road. Once up there the views of Calpe are amazing. The drive up from the main road is at least 10minutes, so approx 20/25mins to the seafront in total. It's up at the top of the mountain & is not walkable, so you will need your car at all times. If you wanted to have a night out, you'd need to get a taxi back.

The villa is surrounded by trees & it's very private & quiet. (There are no bars or restaurants nearby so you need to drive to go out to eat.)

(Take mosquito repellent and use immediately, we got bitten when we arrived. The villa has net covers on the bedroom/bathroom windows so you're ok inside, but outside you need to be careful. It's a very green area, so I guess that's why.)

The villa is lovely, immaculately clean, the bedroom is big - comfy bed & a huge bathroom. There's a fridge & you can get ice from the owners whenever you need it.

The indoor pool is nice, but there's no outside space off the pool for sunbathing. There's a little terrace in front of the driveway with chairs & a table (no sunbeds) beautiful views of Calpe - the sun moves behind the mountain mid-afternoon so it's perfect in a morning but you can't sit in the sun in the afternoon/evening.

Breakfast was very nice - I enjoyed the local bread/olive oil/tomato option (with fresh figs off the tree in the garden!) full English is also available every day, if you want it. If you don't it'd probably be best to say the day before.

We paid for 10nights but left 2 days early to stay where we could walk for a few drinks & meals out, without having to drive.

This is a great place if you want a very quiet base to explore the area by car but not if you want to go out nearby in an evening.

Owner's Response: Must respond to this 3 star review. Why only 3 stars? Probably because you made a mistake, our villa was not what you wanted and you came to the wrong location. And not what you wrote in our guest book either! A natural complainer and selfish! 1. Re your review, on location. Is this a complaint that the villa is in the wrong place/location/area? I've been corresponding with you since June and given you advice on car hire, location, distances, things to see etc. You saw our location on the map and villa photos/description on the website. Also you have been to Calpe before and did manage to find your way back to the villa every night, by car and in the dark, despite there being no street lights! 2. Re Mosquitos. It has been very dry this year and therefore good for the mozzies in Spain, SO SORRY! We gave you repellant (free) to spray yourself with and told you where to buy some. You didn't take our advice, you knew better, forgot to spray and so got bitten a few times. 3. No problems with the bed, bathroom and shower which is a reflection on Liz's cleanliness and attention to detail. 4.If you wanted an outdoor pool with sunbathing facilities you should have chosen a different villa. 5. Sunbeds are here but we cannot do anything about the sun's location or it's relationship with the mountain behind us late afternoon. If you wanted sun all day you should have stayed on the beach. 6. No need to tell us the night before that you didn't want a cooked breakfast the next day. Don't understand this silly comment. 7. Re your 'paid for ten nights but left 2 days early'. You booked for ten nights and we turned away another booking to accommodate you for 10 nights. To leave early was your choice, not ours. Now pleased that we asked you to pay for your stay on day 2 as we knew you wouldn't have paid us for 10 later. 8. Re 7. Perhaps you didn't make any fuss about your bill because you felt guilty about breaking one of our gold breakfast chairs by leaning back on it. My wife cried when she saw the damage as they're special to her. It's been a very expensive/difficult repair. An appollogy, 'very sorry' or 'we'll pay for it' would have been nice, but I guess you thought that it was the chair's fault Alison, not yours. 9. All in all your last sentence sums things up, 'this is a great place if you want a very quiet base to explore the area by car but not if you want to go out nearby in an evening'. Your mistake, you should have listened to yourself and gone elsewhere.

Coming as guests going as friends

  • 5 of 5

We came in a very great and luxirial house. A very great pool waited for us to use it all the time. In the morning after waking up a wonderful breakfast was offered to us, more than we could eat.

We had the breakfast on a marvelous terrace with a great fiew on the miraculous IFACH.

Dave and Liz gave us also a lot of tips what to visit in and arround calpe.

It was a very fine holliday and we will come back.

Outstanding B&B

  • 5 of 5

After we had driven over 500 miles on the day of our arrival, Dave and Liz could not have been more welcoming. They met us near the property to show us the way to get there and Liz gave us sandwiches and drinks, which were greatly appreciated.

The accommodation is first rate and value for money - it was spacious and clean and exactly as described. Everything was well explained and nothing was lacking. There was even milk in the fridge and biscuits with the tea and coffee.

We particularly welcomed Dave's guided tour of the Calpe area the next morning, which helped us with our later visits into Calpe ourselves. We chose to have a couple of meals out with Dave, Liz and Liz's Mum, who was visiting, and both meals were excellent. We were grateful for the lifts and being shown places that you wouldn't easily find yourselves.

The view from the breakfast table will live long in the memory, as will Dave and Liz's determination to be the perfect hosts and make our stay so enjoyable. We really liked Calpe, our drive around the mountain areas (Guadalest/Jalon valley), old part of Altea and Moraira/Teulada.

We would happily return in the future.

A perfect location, great views, beautiful large room with all the amenities you could want or need. The large bed easily accommodated my husband and I and our toddler.

We were looked after so well. We're sad to be home.

Coast/Beach:

It's 12 minutes by car to two great beaches in Calpe. Or why not catch the local scenic train (5 minutes by car down the hill to Calpe railway station) instead of driving and have a day out, to the south, on Benidorm beach (which is cleaned every day) or go north by train to Denia which also has a long, lovely beach. There are also many smaller beaches to be found in the little villages dotted up and down the local coastline where the train will stop (fares are dirt cheap).

Travel:

Alicante Airport 1hr 15min by car.

Valencia Airport 1hr 30min by car.

Car hire would be preferable although, by arrangement, pick up from the airport could be arranged.

Or maybe you would like to do what my wife and I used to do - Drive your own car to Plymouth and take the ferry to northern Spain (Santander/Bilbao). Spend a day (or two, with an overnight stop) driving through the beautiful Spanish countryside and arrive here with your own car.

Distances:

Calpe town is 45 minutes on foot down the hillside or 10 minutes by car. Benidorm, known to most people is 30 minute drive south by car. Alicante and its airport to the south is approximately 90 minutes by car and Valencia (airport) about the same.

Further Details:

AMENITES. Plenty of banks and shops in Calpe. A bustling little seaside town, hundreds of places to eat, all varieties/nationalities of restaurants, Nepalese, Indian, Chinese, Spanish (obviously), Italian (pizzas), German (best for steaks), English (best for roasts), country restaurants in the mountains (our favourite).

There are 2 scuba diving schools here. Sailing schools, rock climbing and cycling, lovely harbours, a big fish auction house. The local scenic railway, north to Denia, south to Alicante, coastal roads north and south, it's a very green region here because of the mountains which surround us.

HOBBIES. Liz, my wife, likes to paint, in oils and watercolours, and took a few years of lessons in the town. We have quite a few of her pictures on the walls. If you would like to 'have a go' (as not everyone wants to sit on the beach, play golf or walk) I'm sure she could pass on some tips. Buy a cheap canvas and give it a try. You never know. She also has green fingers and is a keen gardener and so has a very good knowledge of plants and flowers.

Dave (me) I have always been the sporty type but am starting to slow down a bit now, hence the golf. I love music and for a few years took lessons for electronic organ (I still have my Technics organ here, but I'm still not very good). The stars here are also wonderful so last year I bought a big telescope. If you visit and are into astronomy you will be my friend. I also took 'adult education' Spanish for four years before we came to live here and passed GCSE (wow!). I am now able to identify all the mistakes I make when I open my mouth to make conversation with the locals. I have all the books so if you'd like to learn whilst you are here...I also have a mountain bike and like to go for a gentle ride around our mountain (gravel track) once or twice a week (1½ hours, 3 hrs on foot).

There are some beautiful walks here if this is what you like to do on holiday, as strenuous or as easy as you want.
