About the property

Les Hirondelles can be found at the end of a small lane in a tiny hamlet called Montribot. The hamlet, with just 3 families, is situated on top of a hill at around 1000ft. The location offers peace and tranquility and the most wonderful all round views. It is possible to virtually walk from the door into high flower meadows or onto many varied walks. However, our oasis of calm is far from isolated. The historic town of Rouffignac with all its amenities, including shops, restaurants and a Sunday market, is just 5 minutes away. Excellent roads give easy access to all the attractions of the beautiful Dordogne and Vezere valleys and beyond. They also ensure that, after a busy enjoyable day, it is possible to escape back to our much slower and quieter pace of life.

The cottage has its own private terrace with wooden garden furniture, parasol and gas barbecue. The terrace leads onto a large garden and enjoys superb views across the valley.

About Jeanette and Peter Grainger

For Peter and Jeanette it was love at first sight! After two weeks travelling around SW France, we found our dream home here in Montribot. That was over 17 years ago and we are still in love! Having retired early from our busy and demanding jobs, we moved to France in October 1999. We spent the next two years working on the grounds, installing the pool and renovating the cottages - so many stories to tell!

We opened for business with Pippin's in the summer of 2001 & Sunset followed in 2002. Since then we haven't looked back. We have met so many lovely people over the past 16 years and it is a pleasure to see them return each year, as well as to welcome new guests.

Whatever your reason for visiting us here in this beautiful part of France, we can assure you of a very warm welcome.

Jeanette and Peter Grainger purchased this cottage in 1999

Guestbook comments from the owner

It has been very difficult to choose just a few of the many comments from our Guest Books. The highest accolade we have been afforded is that over 70% of our guests return! However, we hope the following will give you a flavour of what you can expect when you visit us.

"Congratulations on finding this piece of paradise and thank you for your willingness to share it. By far the best Gite holiday we've ever had. Without doubt we will be back." Harrison family, Jersey

"Another fantastic holiday with perfect hosts. Our second visit has certainly lived up to our expectations and beyond. Perfect Gite, perfect weather, perfect situation, perfect hosts - what more could one ask for". Holden family, Lancs

"What can we say that hasn't been said so eloquently by those who have been here before us - other than to concur with every word. The location, accommodation and hospitality of Jeanette & Peter have all been superb." E & M, Hampshire

Situated at almost 1000ft, from wherever you are in the grounds you can delight in the most magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Our veggie plot is usually very productive and, when available, we offer fresh produce to our guests. This includes tomatoes, potatoes, beans, courgettes and beetroot. We also have an abundance of walnuts always available! The 10 x 5m salt water swimming pool has Roman steps, a shallow end suitable for non swimmers and conforms to modern safety standards. A solar heated shower is provided for your comfort. The pool is surrounded by a large, sheltered sun terrace with sun loungers and parasols, and enjoys wonderful views across the valley.

Idyllic paradise retreat!!!

  • 5 of 5

Pippin's cottage is the nicest cottage we could have wished for on our first visit to the Dordogne. It has views to die for and the owners have thought of everything when they furnished it, it's like home from home and I promise you, you won't want to leave. There are guides and pamphlets on every possible hobby and things to do in the surrounding area and you will never run out of amazing things to see and do. We will be joining the list of repeat customers. The hosts are the most welcoming we have ever experienced and like all previous clients have commented, they are not intrusive in any way but there if you need them .

A 'Home from Home'

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Pippins late in the day after a long drive down from Brittany and, after being greeted on the doorstep by a smiling Jeanette and Peter, everything just fell into place in line with our most hopeful expectations! The cottage was a perfect combination of practicality and comfort - compact but plenty of usable space and everything you could need for a relaxing self-catering break immediately to hand. A cooked chicken with salad accompaniments in the large fridge, fresh baguettes, cheese, apricot jam, butter, tea, coffee and milk, plus a delicious red wine chosen by Peter and a huge bowl of walnuts from their garden. Could it get any better? Well yes it did .. as the next morning we explored the lovely open garden and grounds including the fabulous swimming pool terrace with views to die for! The local supermarket (2 kms away) has everything you could possibly need at the cottage and the location of Pippins is so central it provides really easy access to all the best parts the Dordogne has to offer. We had a great time here and will definitely be returning! Rob and Rachel (from Hampshire, UK)

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments. We very much enjoyed your company and look forward to seeing you both again in the future. It is always satisfying when guests enjoy our cottages and the beautiful surrounding area. Over the years we have been in business we have always aimed to maintain consistently high quality and, in any given year, 60 - 70% of the reservations we receive are from returning guests.

Our nearest airport is Bergerac less than one hour's drive away. The airports at Limoges and Bordeaux are about 2 hours away and the new Brive Dordogne Valley airport is just one hour away.

Montribot is a small, quiet hamlet, 4km from Rouffignac St Cernin which has a post office, cashpoint, pharmacy, bars, cafes, restaurants and a Carrefour Contact supermarket. Blondys bakery make the most delicious cakes and pastries for miles around, especially their strawberry tarts - you have been warned!!

The small, colourful market in Rouffignac on Sunday morning provides really fresh locally produced fruit and vegetables, as well as cheese, wine and other tasty goodies! There is a market every day of the week in one of the nearby villages and towns.

The Perigord has many flower-filled, historic small villages which give the distinct impression that they are lost in time. Many have stunning architecture and usually a small bar or restaurant where it is possible, glass in hand, to while away an hour - or three! - and quietly sample a pace of life long forgotton in a busy world.

The area, and particularly the Dordogne valley, abounds in castles, chateaux and beautiful gardens in stunning locations and may be visited throughout the season.

Les Hirondelles is a small paradise for those interested in all aspects of nature. You can walk directly into lovely flower meadows and woodland and we have many varied and waymarked paths, some of which start almost at the door. Spring is the time for bird watching with more than 70 species recorded around our cottages. Wild flowers, and in particular the orchids, are stunning in spring and early summer.

Summer is the ideal time for picnics on the shady banks of a river or relaxing on a lounger by the pool. Autumn is a quieter time, warm with early morning mists and the fantastic changing colours of the forest. The time of bounty with mushrooms, chestnuts and walnuts, and migratiion with Cranes passing overhead in large numbers on their way south to their winter roosts.

For pre-history enthusiasts, the area has the National Centre for Pre-History and the largest concentration of caves and paintings in France. Rouffignac has its own cave with remarkable cave paintings, accessible by an exciting train ride!
