House in Le Temple, Nr, Barbezieux St Hilaire, Charente - Peaceful Location Tucked Away, Ideally Situated With Something For Everyone

The South Charente is the second sunniest region in France behind the Mediterranean but it is also pretty and green! The house is generous with lots of space for everyone, tastefully renovated and tucked away in a pretty hamlet but near to lots of beautiful places to vsit. There is a large lounge with charentais fireplace, a separate second lounge with a full size pool table, a large separate 5x5m. fully equipped kitchen with dining table. We prefer to eat outdoors either on the terrace area, looking over the gardens or under the old baking area by the old bread oven. There is also an entrance/study and a separate laundry with washer, iron, board. Upstairs there are three generous, pretty double bedrooms, one with private bathroom, a second family bathroom and the mezzanine with reading corner and a bed settee. All double beds are kingsize and the mattresses are memoryfoam. Outside, the gardens are generous and private. The views are lovely. There is a pingpong table and outdoor games, rackets, boules. The pool is large and in a very pretty secluded, gated area with loungers and parasols. It is shared with the owner but you can arrange to have occasional private use - just let us know when you would like the pool to yourselves. The surrounding area is very pretty - sunflowers, vines and gently rolling landscape. We can point you to evening markets, delicious restaurants, enchanting walks and memorable visits. Beautiful Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is a short ride away. Visit the village, lunch in the square, sunbathe on the beach by the river and canoe. Or visit Chateauneuf and take a boat ride on the river Charente, where there are often open-air live concerts on Summer evenings. Go to the wonderful festival of Cognac with live music and dinner at the quayside. You can pretty much find a market every day. Mon is Aubeterre and Chalais, Tues is Barbezieux, Wed is Montmoreau, Fri it is Riberac ( sprawling, and busy), Sat is either the little local market in Blanzac or St Aulaye. Or you could visit the great houses of the Medoc, St Emilion, Castillon and Cognac. From May through the Summer almost every village has its local market, night market of local produce, or brocante. Le Temple is ideally located in the heart of this heady mix.

About the Owner

We first came to the beautiful South Charente in 1988 and have since spent long, sunny Summers here with our children who are all now grown up! We are now retired and are lucky enough to live half in the sunny Charente - did you know it's the second sunniest region in France - and half in the hills of beautiful Yorkshire. We both speak fluent French and have many French friends and contacts, so can tell you what's on whilst you're here. We love the food, wine and culture and we can recommend delicious local produce for you, suggest where to eat, buy, visit .... We love the peace, the stars, the sunflowers and vines and all the fascinating places to visit. We love the fact that you can be quiet and hidden away by a pool or have it as busy as you want rocking away at a live concert with the crowds. It really has everything here and we usually know where to find it!

Pan-tiled roofs, sleepy hamlet, nestling amongst sunflowers - the first time we saw it, we thought we had found paradise! Then we discovered the starry sky at night, impossible to describe! Next we found wonderful, kind neighbours and learned our french around their tables - we improved with the wine! And finally we started to explore and found all the life nearby - river and lakeside beaches, the coast, visits, restaurants, bars, live concerts, night life etc etc

By car the nearest lake with restaurant and beach is approx 15 minute. 2 river beaches are approx 20/30 mins.

Further afield at the coast, Talmont and Meschers, pretty and historic fishing villages are a pleasant 50 minutes drive or a little nearer (approx 30 minutes)in Jonzac there is an indoor tropical pool complex.


By air: Fly from all major UK airports. Approx 2 hours from London, Manchester via Poitiers, Limoges, Bordeaux, la Rochelle, Bergerac. Fly from USA to Paris or Bordeaux. Car hire available through all major car hire companies.

By rail: Eurostar from St Pancras via Paris or Lille then TGV to Angouleme.

By car: using all major cross channel providers, then follow directions to Bordeaux. From the east, Geneva is approx. 8hrs. Local directions will be sent to you before your departure.


1.5 km to Blanzac with all local amenities, tennis, football pitch, running track.

Approx 15 mins to Barbezieux, shops, market, bars, restaurants, pool.

Approx 15 mins to lake with restaurant, beach.

Le Temple is ideally located in the South Charente in the heart of France's wine and cognac producing area. It is close to the small market town of Blanzac (2 to 3 minutes by car) with shops, supermarket, bank, health centre, chemist, running track, football pitch and tennis. There are beautiful walks and sleepy, historic villages to visit. Nearby is Brossac fresh water lake (approx. 15 minutes by car) with sandy beach, jet-skiing and a restaurant that overlooks the lake. There are several local restaurants, serving regional produce and Barbezieux (approx. 20 minutes) has a market, chic shops, relaxed restaurants and bars. Chateauneuf often has a Summer live music concert on the riverside and historic Angouleme, our 'main' town is known as the balcony of the Charente. It has restaurants spilling out into cobbled streets, night life, stunning architecture, very chic shopping areas, museums and river cruises on the beautiful Charente. Further afield at the coast, Talmont and Meschers, pretty and historic fishing villages are a pleasant 50 minutes drive or a little nearer (approx 30 minutes)in Jonzac there is an indoor tropical pool complex. Cognac is a beautiful town, with lots of interesting visits and is a great centre of music, with its renowned Cognac Festival in the Summer.

Your holiday price includes the local stay tax, full cleaning service at arrival and at the end of your stay, all bed linen, towels and pool towels and your welcome hamper.

A non-refundable deposit of 25% is payable to secure your reservation and we will hold your dates for 7 days after your initial enquiry, pending receipt of your deposit.
The balance is payable 8 weeks prior to the start of your holiday.
Payment can be made in pounds sterling or euros at the current exchange rate.
A security deposit of £100 (or 150 euros) is payable with the balance in case of breakages. This will be returned to you shortly after the end of your holiday with us.

Changeover Day:
Changeover is normally Saturday, but please ask as we may be able to be flexible.
The house will be ready for you from 4.30pm and we ask that you leave at the end of your stay by 10.00am so our cleaning team can prepare the house for the next guests.

From the Owner

The house is very generous and pretty. The gardens are large, sunny and private. The pool is west-facing and sunny with loungers and parasols. We first renovated it for us and now that we no longer live there we re-did it three years ago. It is immaculate and tasteful, nestled in a delightful hamlet but not remote. In our local little town there is all you need - supermarket, shops, bank, doctor, dentist, tennis, football, running track. Then easily accessible are beaches, restaurants, bars. There really is something for everyone. Certainly our clients who came for the first time are still coming back!

  • Notes on accommodation: The house is in a pretty hamlet. It is generous with 2 large lounges, a separate farmhouse kitchen, 3 pretty double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. The double height pool room is full of character, with antique black and white tiles, handcast stone staircase and beams from the ancient cognac distillary of the famous French poet, Alfred de Vigny, which is nearby and worth a visit. We also have available a cot and a high chair, a push chair, fans ( it can get hot here in the Summer! ) and wood for the large open fire. A welcome hamper will be waiting for you on your arrival, to help you relax after your journey. Do also help yourselves to herbs and garden produce when available - you can pick them fresh yourself from the garden. Outside: Outside there is a private, large dining terrace and garden with barbecue for eating, drinking and watching the sun go down. In the garden there are loungers. There is also a separate covered barbecue area with the original bread oven, which leads through to the covered courtyard. Through the garden there is separate, pretty, gated area with the 12x 5m. pool. It is shared with the owner but you can arrange occasional private use if you prefer. It has sunbathing and shaded area, loungers and Shanghai parasols. There are a variety of garden toys and outdoor games, ping-pong table, rackets and balls and a childrens' paddle pool. Utility Room: The separate utility room has washer, iron and board. All bed linen, towels, kitchen towels and pool towels are provided at no extra charge. The house is deep-cleaned for your arrival and we also provide an end of stay cleaning service, included in your price. Your local "taxe de séjour" is also included.
