Overview

About the property

Holiday Home in Fontanar, Pozo Alcon, Nr. Cazorla, Jaen, Spain - Large, Secluded Country Cave House With Private Pool, Terraces And Stunning Views

A large, partial cave house, with stunning, uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside as far as the Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Baza and Jabalcón mountain. Situated close to the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, the house is completely private and unoverlooked. It is on the outskirts of an attractive Andalucian village (Fontanar). It is in an elevated position above a very quiet and little-used rural road. You can simply enjoy the peaceful and tranquil setting, swimming, sunbathing and relaxing at home or use as a base to explore. The house offers cool cave rooms in summer and has a wood-burning stove for cooler spring and autumn evenings. This property is a well maintained and much-loved second home and is also used regularly by its owners.

About Debra Hardman

We are a Spanish-speaking English professional couple with a grown up family. This is our much loved second home in a delightful part of rural Spain. We offer this as a letting to like-minded people who wish to experience a real Spanish break.

Debra Hardman purchased this house in 2006

Why Debra Hardman chose Sierra de Cazorla

We decided to buy this type of property in this location for several reasons. One of us is fluent in Spanish. It is located away from the crowds and expat communities. It has good communications links to airports, major roads, coast, ski areas and rural life. The area is essentially Spanish and offers the opportunity to mix freely with the local community in a relaxing environment.

It is situated in a private, unoverlooked position on the very outskirts of Fontanar surrounded by almond and olive groves

The property itself is a cave reform which has been completed to a high standard, blending the original build with the new. We have lovingly furnished the house with good quality new furniture.

What makes this house unique

In this area we enjoy spectacular scenery, a variety of local flora and fauna; local markets, bars and restaurants frequented by Spanish locals. From the house you have amazing, uninterrupted views of the Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Baza and Jabalcón mountain. The house is on the edge of the Cazorla National Park which offers opportunities for swimming in lakes, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, away from the crowds. This is a peaceful location even at the height of the summer; a destination popular mainly with Spaniards but also visited by other Europeans.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"I just wanted to say how much we adored both the house, the immediate area and the region. In spite of some tough competition, it has secured the Spain top spot for me. I have never stayed in such a beautifully kept holiday home".

Excellent stay!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 5 and spent 2 weeks this summer at the beautifully located house. House and surroundings are well maintained, and the scenery while sitting at the pool, is perfect. Large fields with olive trees, and in the far distance you can see the mountains. You indeed have complete privacy.

The cave house is comfortable, and cool during the night. There are enough beds with great mattrasses. All you need in the kitchen is there.

Another nice thing with children is the availability of WIFI and a TV, which was nice during the Olympics.

I can truly recommend choosing Fontanar. Its a little village with the market on Monday. There are enough restaurants. Another nice thing is the fact that you are right in the middle of several natural parks with great lakes. Great swimming, kayaking. Food locally is superb and very affordable.

Fantastic setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cave house in a spectacular setting. The house is very cool and homely. The views from the terrace are amazing. We saw a royal eagle several times as well as hoopoes. The local area is very agricultural with donkeys, olive and almond trees in abundance. The added bonus of the daily bread and pastry van was much appreciated as well as the weekly fish van.

It is close too the national park and beautiful lakes for swimming. It is a great place for a peaceful and restful stay.

Lovely, comfy place far away from the crowds, swimming pool not for the delicate skin

  • 4 of 5

Good:

- Rural area, very quiet and peaceful.

- Cool, fresh place, because it's in a cave (and therefore utterly quiet, perfect for light sleepers).

- Comfortable: good beds, big fridge, good wifi, good water pressure in the shower.

Could perhaps be better:

- Garden is not taken care of by "green fingers". The garden is clean and furniture is adequate, but the plants on the picture, including the big tree in front of the gate, are gone. The pictures show a little bit more idyllic garden scenery.

- Pool is very clean, perhaps too clean. We both have normal skins and never experienced any problems with pool water, but this water makes your skin quite quickly quite dry.

For small grocery and stuff Pozo Alcón is fine. If you want to buy food for a week (the fridge is big enough), better go to a Mercadona in Guadix or Baza.

What you should know: July and August are very, very hot. The cave stayes surprisingly cool, but outside the cave the temperature is nearly unbearable from about 11 o'clock in the morning till about 5 o'clock in the afternoon during thes months. (If there is any wind at all, it feels like a hairdryer.) So if you're planning on hiking or doing a lot of sightseeing, avoid these months.

Great location, fantastic view and cool accommodation during a hot summer

  • 5 of 5

We had never tried a cave house before - but we had often been to Spain during summer. Our youngest daughter suffers quite a bit under the heat, so the house was perfect for our stay, as the house stays cool through out the day. - and the night as well. The location is very rural, quiet, and a bit off road - but it was just what we were looking for. The view is amazing. The first night there was a thunderstorm and we could see the lightning from across the plane from the bedroom window on the first floor - it was breathtaking!

During the mornings, late afternoons and evenings we stayed outdoors around the pool - and during the hours of siesta we would prefer to stay in doors.

The house is simple furnished, but with lots of rooms - however you must be prepared that living in a cave house, there are no doors, only to the bathroom and the upstairs. Wi-fi and television working OK - with occational drop outs. The kitchen had fully-functional hub and oven, fridge and microwave. However - do not expect a lavishly equipped kitchen: You will be able to basic cooking, which was fine with us.

The bathroom on the ground floor was large with a gigantic tub and everything was working fine.

The beds were very comfortable. The upstairs bedroom tends to get quite hot due the sun and it took us a couple of days to get a sufficient rutine going with closing the shutters during the day and opening them Again late in the evening.

The local town does only offer very little shopping, so you would have to go the next town to have a fair selection of foods and restaurants - and especially the weekly market is a must. Reportedly, a bread van would come by on a daily basis and a fishmonger once a week - but don't depend on it: We had only one visit during our 11 day stay.

We had a lovely stay and would like to come back, perhaps in an other time of year, since the area invites to interesting walks and splendid nature. We did only little due to the heat.
