If you are interested in La Goupillère Country House please find us online to fully appreciate it and also to find a wealth of information about the property and the area in general.

La Goupillère is in the north-east of La Mayenne, part of the region of Pays de la Loire, just south of Normandy and east of Brittany. It is easily accessed from any of the Channel ports and is four hours drive from Calais and the Eurotunnel terminal and two hours from Caen. It is designed to sleep up to six people in comfort but, should you have additional children, could accommodate eight people as there is a large mezzanine that can be used as a bedroom for younger folk. In addition, a cot is available upon request, normally in the large master bedroom..

La Goupillère is not really a gîte in the traditional sense - it's a very well appointed and spacious country house, an old restored farmhouse and although we live nearby, and are therefore on hand should you need us, we are not on-site, so you can enjoy your privacy. There are plenty of activities and the area is particularly noted for walking/rambling, cycling, fishing, horse riding, exploring ancient woodland or just driving through the beautiful countryside and forests. There are many small medieval towns that retain their charm and history and nearby lakes with sandy beaches, restaurants, bars and activities.

Notes on accommodation: Although from the pictures of the outside it can look as though there are a number of properties on the site, everything you see is included in the rental price. There is a lot of space! Our prices throughout the year include all heating costs (oil for the central heating and hot water and wood for the wood burning fire) and you will not be asked for any supplements however much you need or use. We believe this policy is fair to our clients as it allows them to budget exactly what the costs will be without any hidden extras. Outside: There is a paved patio with garden furniture, lighting and a large purpose-built barbeque to the rear. The door is directly from the kitchen and there's also access from the garden. The patio and a stretch of lawn are fenced and secure and are safe for children to be left on their own, subject to your own risk-assessment though. See our own website for pictures. The patio is shaded during the hottest parts of the day, therefore cool in summer but gets the sun in the mornings and evenings. To the front of the house there are permanent benches. Tables, chairs and parasols can be taken from the barn to create an additional sitting or eating area, especially for sun lovers as this faces south. There's a huge courtyard and lots of covered barns for parking or to use as a "party barn", with a barbeque if it rains. There is a large private garden (mainly grass) and nearby private and secluded meadows. We provide a range of garden games for use in the garden, courtyard or barn. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer, ironing board, iron and drying frame. The machines are housed under a kitchen worktop and there is plenty storage space. Also houses the central heating/hot water boiler and the electrical switch board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: High quality bed linen and towels are provided. Bed linen is professionally laundered and changed weekly. The property will be clean upon your arrival and should be left in a clean condition upon departure. Other: Large mezzanine floor with second dining table/chairs and soft seating. Great for the kids to play games (or getting away from the kids!) Stair gate. Hallways for coats, luggage storage, etc.

Comfortable & well equipped farmhouse, wonderful!

We were delighted when we arrived at the farmhouse. We received a very nice welcome from Peter and the welcome pack with fresh fruit, milk and everything we could need to get us started was gratefully received. The farmhouse is very spacious, well equipped, clean and very well furnished. What I liked most was that it came with everything we needed for a lovely stay. There were plenty of DVD's, board games and outside games for the kids and lots of comfortable furniture for all of us to enjoy the garden and patio areas. We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked again for next year. I would recommend this farmhouse to stay in for a relaxing and peaceful stay in rural France.

Deceptive Gem

Last minute booking which the owners were very helpful arranging with me. The Farmhouse is much larger than it looks and exceptionally well equipped. Rooms are large beds are very comfortable with quality bedding. The information booklet the owners have compiled is the best I have come across in holiday rentals regarding house equipment local restaurants and shopping etc. No struggling with how to work the TV and cooker. The welcome pack is of superior standard and the generous household supplies means toilet rolls cleaning products supplied. The grounds are spacious and quite private. It is not far from the nearest village. A car is needed. 3 upper bedrooms are accessed up a slightly steep staircase. An upper and lower bathroom. Good Wifi is included. The peace and quiet was heaven and we highly recommend and very much hope to return. Thank you Peter and Sally discreet but very friendly English owners who live few hundreds yards away.

Large private and tranquil farmhouse

All our expectations were fulfilled by this lovely house and garden. The extremely full details provided ahead by the hosts were accurate and our family of three generations plus dog were pleased to have made such a perfect choice. There was ample space and the house was immaculately presented, with a well-stocked kitchen. The location is very quiet and we saw deer and hares on our morning walks. The owners had provided the most generous "welcome pack" we have every experienced. We would happily recommend the house and the area to others.

Wonderful house in a beautiful area

We were very impressed by the high standard and quality of the accommodation and enjoyed everything about our stay at La Goupillere. Spacious, comfortable, full of character with all mod-cons, the house provided everything you could ask for and more, including the fabulous welcome pack. Peter and Sally were very generous and hospitable hosts, full of useful tips and recommendations for places to eat, days out, etc. The location of the house is in beautiful, tranquil setting but is not remote, with lots to see and do within a short distance (and a great little supermarket about 10 minutes drive away). We had a great holiday and would highly recommend La Goupillere.

Wonderful Holiday!

We have had a wonderful holiday in the best equipped holiday house we have ever stayed in. The "welcome pack" was so generous and much appreciated after our journey to get here. Peter and Sally were great hosts with lots of advice of things to do and places to see. We would most certainly try to come back here sometime. Thanks again to out hosts.

Hidden Gem

This has got to be the best property we have ever stayed in. Nothing is to much trouble for the owners (Peter & Sally). We would certainly recommend this extremely well maintained, clean and cosy property.Peter and Sally provide an amazing welcome pack. There is a very extensive list of restaurants supplied in your personal welcome booklet and all the information you could ever need. We have already booked our next visit.

Special interest holidays:

The property is ideally suited for the Le Mans racetrack 50 km away (31 mls) and its medieval town and cathedral. The route is trouble free and a very pleasant run.

The Loire Valley, with its scenery, châteaux and of course vineyards, where you can buy excellent wine at bargain prices, is less than two hours drive, around 145 km (90 mls).

Wildlife and bird watching tours can be arranged through our friends in a nearby village.

For history lovers, there are many châteaux of varying size and grandeur not far away, plenty of charming medieval towns and the area is steeped in Roman history, nearby Jublains being the capital of the ancient Gallic tribe of the Diablintes, later occupied and settled by the Romans and becoming their regional capital. The remains of the fortress, temple and baths are there for you to explore today and there is a fascinating museum. The museums in the châteaux at Mayenne and Ste Suzanne are also noteworthy, as is the word war II museum at Conlie.

Coast/Beach:

The coast and beaches are about two hours drive away as are the Normandy Beaches where the WWII landings took place.

For swimming, there is a wonderful lake with a sandy man-made beach at Sillé-le-Guillaume, 17 km away (11 miles) and excellent public pools at Bais (7 km), Villaines- la-Juhel (12 km) and Evron (16 km). The beach at Sillé-le-Guillaume has horse and donkey rides, boat trips and bars and restaurants.

There are many lakes and of course the Mayenne river, all great places to walk or cycle.

Travel:

A car is essential to reach the property. Once here, it depends on what you want to do! Cycling and walking are local pastimes but it is a rural area so you will need a car if you intend to explore the wider area.

Easily accessed from any of the Channel ports; It is about four hours drive from Calais and the Eurotunnel terminal, three hours from Cherbourg and Dieppe and about two hours from Caen and Le Havre.

Distances:

The nearest bar/restaurant, general store and boulangerie are in Ize, 3 km away with more bars, restaurants, boulangeries and local supermarkets in Bais, 7 km. Courcite, 8km in the other direction, has a bar/restaurant and an excellent boulangierie. Villaines-la-Juhel, 13 km, is the nearest town of any size and has a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants and a large supermarket which sells practically everything. Further Details:

Big open countryside, clean fresh air, forests, woods and a big big sky. Climate tends to be like southern England only a bit more extreme - hotter and sunnier in summer and colder in winter. The population density is very low and the roads are empty. There is no crime to speak of, no vandalism and no grafitti. The people are polite and friendly. There are many family-oriented summer and autumn events in the villages and towns, where all are welcome. Two hours is the norm for lunch, which costs about 11€ in one of the many restaurants. You might as well have lunch because most of the shops close between 12 and 2 anyway! Unspoiled is probably the best description, maybe like England was a few decades ago but with better food. It's an easy and pleasant journey from the channel ports and once here it is equally easy and unstressful to get to some of the most famous and desirable places in northwest and western France.

In the immediate vicinity there are plenty of ancient public chemins (footpaths) to explore. Right on your doorstep we have a large meadow with a stream in a valley, reached by a private chemin where you can picnic or walk. The country roads are quiet and traffic free and ideal for walking or cycling. Mont Rochard (7 km), our local "mountain" is heavily wooded, offering beautiful walks and Le Bois du Tay (10 km) is another forested area not far away.

The town of Mayenne is well worth a visit and the newly restored château an absolute must... maybe lunch on a boat on the river? If you like old French towns you will love Sainte-Suzanne, Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, Saint-Léonard-des-Bois, Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei and many more.

One place not to miss is the fortified old Plantagenet cité of Le Mans. The beautiful flying-butress cathedral and medieval houses in their cobbled streets are impressive at any time but especially so in the evenings of July & August when they are illuminated in the most magical display of light, colour and sound.
