House in Bishops Lydeard, Taunton, Somerset, England - Peaceful Location On The Edge Of A Picturesque Village And Within The Quantock Hills AONB

This recently converted red sandstone barn on the southern slopes of the Quantock Hills offers comfortable self catering accommodation for two. It is beautifully furnished with antiques and original art. It is an ideal base for exploring this beautiful AONB area with its herds of red deer and Quantock ponies. It consists of a private entrance from an attractive small garden where you can sit and enjoy the sun, into a comfortable open plan, attractively furnished and decorated sitting room with flat-screen Freeview TV, and a Bose CD and radio. The dining area and kitchen are comprehensibly equipped. There is a modern electric hob, microwave, toaster and electric kettle. Stairs lead up to the pretty twin/double bedroom with large en-suite shower, basin & WC. Double French style windows open on to a small balcony overlooking the garden. Fully centrally heated in the winter and with east and south facing windows for morning and afternoon sun, The Barn is as welcoming in winter as in summer. We welcome dogs (at a charge) and they occasionally share the garden with our friendly miniature poodle. See Owners Website below.

relaxing weekend break

Great little property in a quiet and lovely location.

Had a great meal at local restaurant, Podshavers.

One small point - helpful if basic supplies in cottage......salt pepper vinegar sugar etc.

Clean, cosy and well equipped

Accurate listing, would recommend the Barn, owners quickly rectified the one small problem we had. Liked the Bird in the Hand for drink and food but the other pub was under new management and not really ready for customers.

Perfect, relaxing weekend break!

This was the perfect place for a relaxing weekend break, which was exactly what my boyfriend and I wanted after a few busy weeks at work.

The barn was well equipt, although it didn't have a proper oven as listed, but that did mean we got to check out the Chinese that was located in the village!

It was so peaceful and spotlessly clean and we would definitely recommend this to those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle.

The village was quaint and a great place to explore and it was a real treat to hear the sounds of the steam train through the open windows.

We hope to return in the autumn.

Bishops Lydeard is a delightful, unspoilt Somerset village with stunning scenery and all the necessary facilities on the doorstep to make life comfortable and easily managed. The Quantock Hills behind the village, teem with wildlife and support herds of deer and Exmoor ponies. The walks are delightful. The peace and quiet of the countryside makes it hard to believe we are only 20 minutes from the town of Taunton, with its mainline railway station and motorway junction. A perfect place to live or to visit.

The nearest beaches are a 15 minute drive away on Somerset's north coast between Watchet and Minehead. These can also be reached on The West Somerset Steam Railway from Bishops Lydeard.


Nearest airports are Exeter and Bristol, both about 35 miles away.

The mainline station at Taunton is just 15 minutes drive away.


The Barn is perfectly positioned to tour Somerset's places of interests. Hestercombe Gardens, Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves, Dunster Castle, Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral, the Roman City of Bath and more mundanely, Clarks Shopping Village, Mulberry Factory Shop and Kilver Court Designer Outlet Venue in Shepton Mallet. Exmoor and the Lorna Doone country is on our doorstep, the Somerset Levels, The Willows and Wetlands visitor centre and Coleridge Cottage are within easy driving distance.

Bishops Lydeard is a traditional Somerset village centred on its attractive 13th century Church. The village still retains its paper shop, Co-op grocery store with ATM, post office, pharmacy, family butcher who prepares his own locally produced meat and a farm shop providing an excellent range of fresh local fruit and veg. The West Somerset Steam Railway starts from Bishops Lydeard station and wends its way through beautiful countryside to the seaside town of Minehead, stopping at village stations on the way. The County Town of Taunton which connects with both mainline Rail (Paddington 1hour 40 minutes journey time) and M5 Motorway networks is just 4 miles away. There are 2 pubs in the village, both within easy walking distance, offering excellent food, and a noted restaurant, Podshavers, just 1 mile away. The delightful traditional tearooms, just 150 yards away, are proving very popular with visitors.

For those who enjoy an active holiday, there are good golf courses within easy reach. The coast and beaches are within a 20 minute drive and the open vistas of Exmoor and the Quantock and Brendon hills are all around us with miles of open moorland to explore on foot. There is pony trekking available nearby. It is a haven for naturalists and bird watchers, lepidopterists and photographers.

  • Notes on accommodation: We regret that the accommodation is not really suitable for children or those with mobility problems due to the steps and stairs. Outside: There is private off-road parking for your vehicle and the pretty garden is provided with garden furniture, ideal for enjoying tea in the sun! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are provided and changed weekly and the property is fully cleaned before each let. We are happy to accommodate small well behaved dogs, but please ask us first as we make a £10 charge for them.
