About this property

Traditional House In White Spanish Village

Calle del Laberinto 27, Competa, Malaga is a three storey village house in the old part of the village. It is interlocked with its neighbours as a result of its having been added to over the centuries. It is about two minutes walk from the main square.
It has been modernised without loss of character and enjoys the normal facilities of mains electricity, water, main sewer and daily rubbish collection. It has been our holiday home since we bought it in 1985 and is still in use as such.
The accommodation offered consists of two bedrooms, a main dining/sitting, kitchen, shower-room, further living room on the second floor and two roof terraces. A large entrance hall could also be used as a living room, this would have been its original use and is still traditional amongst the villagers. The second floor bedroom has two single beds which can be put together if wished. The main first floor bedroom has a double bed, it is accessed through the main sitting/dining room. This room is equipped with a double sofa bed thus offering the possibility of a third bedroom.
The two terraces offer a choice between sun and shade. The upper terrace is accessed by an external staircase from the lower terrace.
Stairgates have been fitted so that very young children can play safely on either of the two floors which are normally occupied without fear of their falling down the stairs.
The kitchen is equipped with a fridge and gas cooker with oven. Full hot and cold water are plumbed to the kitchen and shower room. Water heating is by electricity. Cooking and space heating are by Calor Gas. There is an automatic washer and dishwasher. Bedding and towels are supplied for the use of tenants although we ask that they leave these clean if possible on their departure. Tenants are expected to replace and pay for exchange butane gas cylinders should they become empty during their stay (approx. cost fifteen Euros). The most convenient depot for this is the petrol station just outside the village on the road to the coast. A trolley is provided to carry cylinders up the stepped street from the car. Delivery can be arranged, but this may require waiting in.
There is a TV (Spanish terrestrial reception only) with DVD/VHS player. An excellent range of DVDs (in English) is available for hire in the village. There are some in a drawer in the living room of the house. There is also a small CD playing hifi system with Bluetooth.
Wifi is available at modest cost. The tenant has to buy a permit from Competa Internet, which is next to the restaurant El Pilon near the bottom of Calle Laberinto. The permits are for a given period between one and thirty days.
Although the neighbour cleans the house before occupation, tenants are asked to leave the house tidy and ready for cleaning.
The village is built on a steep hill, and as a result the terraces enjoy views over the village and surrounding hills, and in the distance, the sea. In exceptional conditions it is possible to see mountains in North Africa. Calle del Laberinto, like most of the streets in the older part of the village, is labyrinthine and too narrow for cars, this contributes to the tranquil atmosphere. Car parking is available nearby. A full range of shops, including banks, is available within two minutes walk.
Much of the charm of the older part of the village is a consequence of its being built on a steep hill. If you suffer from difficulties walking on steep inclines, we recommend you discuss this with us before making a booking.

Centrally located traditional Spanish home
Well equipped, spacious very close to the main square, restaurants, shops and bars. Short walk to the hotel which has a lovely pool. We stayed for 5 nights. There were just 3 of us but the house could comfortably accommodate more. The lower terrace was a nice place to eat breakfast

Great traditional village house
We stayed here for a week, the house is well equipped with everything you could need for a break away and is very comfortable and spacious, nice view from the roof terrace’s and in a great position in the village. Mike and Chris were helpful with any queries we had. Only negative is the house isn’t great if you have mobility issues as it’s set on 4 levels but this is quite common for Spanish house’s but we liked it’s Spanish charm and would stay again

Proper (quirky) Spanish house, clean, well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay.
For those of the mind to swerve purpose built holiday accommodation/hotels in favour of a more authentic experience of a mountain village of Axarquía, this cracking house in the wonderfully vibrant Cómpeta is ideal. It affords everything you need to self cater in close proximity (on foot) to all amenities making for a brilliant holiday on a small budget. We appreciated its proximity to the best restaurants too - El Pilon is just down the street (we also enjoyed La Taberna de Oscar very much, just off the nearby, main square). Having hired a car for a 2week tour of the region, we originally planned just a few days at the house with a view to moving on. The roads into Cómpeta are good but we found them intimidating at first (unfamiliar car, left hand drive, 8miles of hairpin bends on a steep gradient & awareness of delaying locals behind you as you take it slowly!). However, once we got over that & realised that Alhambra, Granada, Malaga, the caves of Nerja.. were in such reasonable proximity with a car for day trips, we would have liked to stay at the house in Competa as a base for a longer stay. If you're on an exploratory mission Competa itself can be "done" in a day or two but is equally a wonderful place to kick back & relax. We really appreciated the choice of shady and sunny patios on the roof of the house from where we watched the sunset with a bottle of wine. We didn't need to use it but the provision of a washing machine & washing line as well as all bedding and towels significantly reduces how much you need to bring. The little street where the house is is inaccessible by car. In October the main car-park for the village had lots of space. There is closer parking to be had but finding a space can be tricky. Regardless, there will always be a walk to the house through lovely, cobbled, steep, winding streets. Our tip would be to take a rucksack in order to carry what you need to the house, leaving a cumbersome suitcase in the car. Manually powered wheelchair users would struggle so much that sadly, I'd go as far as to say avoid Cómpeta. Kids in lightweight buggies will have a brilliant ride though & this house is ideal for young families, as well as the middle aged couple that we are. Other little things we appreciated about the house itself include insect nets across all windows, dishwasher, ice compartment in the fridge, start off cooking (and other) basics, sharp knives & Dr Rosenbloom's flexible approach to booking. A bargain too!

My husband and I have been holidaying in Competa for the past ten years.. And this will be the second time we have stayed in this property. It is a lovely house very clean and well maintained and has every thing one needs for the perfect holiday. It is situated a couple of minutes from the centre of Competa close to shops, bars, and restaurants . But should you wish to cook, the kitchen in the property has everything you would need to make the perfect meal. It also has a very pretty roof terrace where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or sunbathe. We really enjoyed our stay last year and can’t wait to go back in June. We'd have no hesitation recommending this property.

About the host

Host profile image
We are a married couple who have lived in Devon since 2006 having lived in the Southern outskirts of London until we retired in 2000. Before we retired we worked in the NHS and social services.

Why they chose this property

We visited Competa with a friend in 1983 and again in 1985. On the second visit we made a snap decision to buy our own house and have never regretted that decision. We chose Competa because it is a living village, the majority of the population being Spanish although there is a significant Northern European population who have made Competa their home.
Competa is a pretty village with whitewashed houses in a spectacular mountainous area offering splendid walking. The coast is about half an hours drive away. The area is easily accessible with Malaga airport less than an hours drive away.

What makes this property unique

The property is just two minutes walk from the village square. Being our holiday home it is comfortably furnished with a well equipped kitchen.
We enjoy walking in the mountains and the country-side, sitting on our terraces and the friendly, lively atmosphere of the village.
We often eat out in Competa as it is particularly pleasurable and not expensive.
We also like occasional trips to towns such as Granada, Cordoba, Seville etc..
