Quirky characterful barn in great location

  • 5 of 5

Having never ranged further north in Wales than Snowdonia, I decided to book our family holiday here, close to the Cheshire border. Rosemount Barn stood out as a charming and affordable base that was close to areas of interest but not too 'touristy'. The owners who live nextdoor were very friendly and readily available, but not at all intrusive. We were welcomed with a warm and fragrant fresh baked loaf on arrival, as well as tea coffee milk etc, which was much appreciated after a long journey. As its close to the A55 expressway it was easy to find, but the road is far enough away not to be seen or heard. What you do get to see is a peek from the upstairs window of the Dee estuary, and seconds away a charming church and pleasant footpath. You are not overlooked and the small but pleasant garden is safely enclosed. The barn itself exudes character and has been well planned and renovated. Many of the rooms are on a different level which adds to the quirkiness, and massively thick stone walls are snug without being oppressive- there is lots of natural light. The lounge is small but comfy, though we actually spent most time in the roomy kitchen around the dining table with the French doors open. The lofty beamed bedrooms are very nice indeed, and the mezzanine/'den' leading from the twin bedroom was a real treat; my six year old was enchanted.

The rooms were absolutely spotless and all the furnishings and appliances were high quality. There were lots of thoughtful little touches that made it feel more than just a basic holiday home.

In a week we visited Bodelwyddan castle, pretty Llangollen driving along the unmissable Horseshoe Pass, elegant Llandudno (aquamarine seas and traditional pier perfect in the sunshine), a walk up and cable car down Great Orme (the wrong way round to do it!), quant historic Chester and zesty, vibrant Liverpool (travelling by train from nearby Flint station which was cheap and easy), the eponymous holy well at Holywell, lovely long walks along sections of the coast path at Flint castle (nice picnic spot) and Talacre (don't be put off by the shabby kiss me quick holiday homes and amusements- the vast beach and iconic lighthouse and a walk along Gronant dunes is spectacular), and we barely scratched the surface. No matter; it gives us an excuse to return.
