About John Gittus

I'm a bit of a wanderlust who has seen the world and decided to find some roots in those bits of the planet I enjoyed most of all. Sue is very much a home-maker and takes most things in her stride. Apart from which she is a willing accomplice. As a retired businessman and keen sportsman I now find the involvement in my holiday property very fulfilling and take much pleasure out of giving exceptional holidays to others as well as ourselves. And when you study the photographs you will see why we have so many regular guests who return time after time.

John Gittus purchased this apartment in 1992

Why John Gittus chose Newquay & St Austell area

Having spent my early years by the sea I have always been drawn back, as we all are, to visit time and time again.

When I decided to buy a permanent holiday home by the sea I explored the entire coast line of England, Scotland and Wales. I was looking for the most spectacular views I could find together with a kind climate and a handsome property.

Fowey came to me almost by accident since in past years my journeys along the South Cornish coast had always been diverted on the one way system away from the town centre. But on one occasion we decided to park a few miles out of Fowey and walk back along the coast. What I saw as I rounded the final corner rooted me to the spot, and when I found the apartment sitting in just about the prime spot in Fowey my search was over.

A comfortable walk to the town along the estuary is always enjoyable, and in the opposite direction you reach the sand beach of Readymoney Cove (the inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier's "Fisherman's Creek" in just a couple of hundred yards.

What makes this apartment unique

First and foremost the spectacular views are hypnotic and many returning guests all vouch for this fact.

As you enter the lounge you are first of all stunned at the beauty and then calmed by the tranquility of the place as you position yourself in the viewing area.

The apartment was formerly part of the Penlee hotel owned by the actress's Shirley Eaton family, and as we all know hotels always get the prime spots in any location.

It has the enviable advantage of being just a couple of hundred yards from Readymoney beach, St Catherine's Point, and the beginning of the coastal path - yet at the same time being just ten minutes walk from the town with its pubs, restaurants and shops.

And it is almost unique in Fowey in having its own car park immediately opposite.

Very spacious apartment in a great location

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is in a great location with wonderful views from the balcony. We are a family of four with two teenage boys and there was bags of space for us. The parking space is great as parking can be difficult in Fowey.

There was a well equipped kitchen and two spacious bedrooms with very comfy beds and plenty of storage space.

We had a great time there and would recommend.

Tranquil setting and luxury apartment.

  • 5 of 5

We had everything we needed in the apartment. It was only 10 minutes from the town and shops. Only 5 minutes from the beach and coastal walks. The furnishings in the apartment are luxurious and comfortable. The views out onto the estuary are amazing at all times of the day and all weather's. We had a lovely stay and managed to get 4 runs along the beautiful coastal path. Thank you to the owners for the quality of the apartment, couldn't fault it.

Lovely location with stunning views whatever the weather.

  • 5 of 5

The property is quite large and has a massive front room with huge TV DVD (could not make this work for some reason- no matter) comfy sofas cushions and a great place to sit and relax. The dining table has a great view of the sea and river towards Polruan across the way. Breakfast on the balcony even if a bit chilly is a real treat. Bedrooms large with plenty of space, storage etc. Kitchen very well equipped. Large fridge and freezer, W/M & D/W.

We stayed a week - not long enough to fully unwind. Weather was calm all week as winds always from west behind the hill, Balcony like the bay entrance is sheltered from most westerly winds. Walks to town and beach were short. Convenience store not far away. Good selection of consumables, wines and Gins if an emergency happens and you run out! I Highly recommend the butchers! Bakers in the town are par excellence. Yes the place needs a bit of care here and there but so does everyone's house somewhere. It is a very welcoming place to return to however. Not great if you get short of breath though as there hills and steps everywhere. Exercise you will get without really trying. The air is the freshest you will breath though so that is a bonus. I recommend firm comfy walking shoes/boots and windproof jacket and shorts of course. Try the mackerel fishing which is easy and fun. You might even catch your lunch or Dinner! You can keep what you catch. Boats can be hired too.

If this had its own boat and mooring it would be brilliant!

In conclusion, I would go back there again, for 2 weeks this time. That will give time to chill and maybe travel about a bit. The parking space is very useful as parking space is at a premium in most Cornish towns and the car park has a great view of the sea as well so the car won't get bored!.

Many thanks, it was great.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments and for being such excellent guests. The Dolphins is indeed near enough to the town to enjoy the facilities but at the same time a very peaceful place to wind down at any time of the year, and we would be delighted to welcome you back in the future for a longer stay. Many thanks.

Wonderful Apartment - Absolutely Faultless!

  • 5 of 5

This was a special celebratory holiday for us so we were looking for something special in one of our favourite areas of Cornwall. We were looking for a holiday let near a beach, shops, restaurants with cracking views and a parking space - a lot to ask for but we found it here!

The moment we let ourselves into the Dolphins we were treated with the bonus of a top quality holiday apartment. As others have said the property is clean and well equipped to a luxurious standard, the living room is huge and the view from the dining room and balcony are spectacular.

The lovely large bathroom was a bonus with children, there is a lot of storage and plenty of hangers for our clothes, the kitchen is well equipped and we cooked in several times. We also loved that the apartment was all on one level.

The location of the apartment is perfect, easy walk to the shops and town and just minutes to Readymoney Cove beach which we all loved. We took a boat over to Polruan which is a really pretty and interesting area to walk around. We only moved the car once during the week for a trip to nearby Polkerris beach for the day which I highly recommend. Finally the parking space is ideal, we have a large Landrover and there was ample room for it. Will we be back? Definitely!!

Fabulous view and location. Disappointing apartment, in need of thorough clean and upgrade.

  • 1 of 5

This apartment is probably in one of the best locations in Fowey. The view from the living room and balcony is stunningly beautiful, even on a wet day, and the convenience of a parking space together with the proximity to all the many amenities in the town is excellent. It is certainly very spacious and also has a very nice large television. However, the condition of the apartment itself was rather disappointing. It was very shabby in parts, particularly the outdated kitchen, and certainly hadn't had a good clean in some time. Some of the fixtures and fittings were very dated (dusty old plastic plants and bamboo table; stained blind in the kitchen which had certainly seen better days). Also the mattress on the double bed was not of good quality and resulted in back ache for us both. Basic things like missing light bulbs in the bedroom and living room, and the lack of any basic provisions (not even a tea bag or a pint of milk!) was a let down in a so called five star property. On complaining to the owner we have been informed that the apartment will be refurbished after this summer season, but that is of little comfort to us when we have already paid for what we were informed was 'five star quality'. We also thought it was a shame that there is no visitors' book to show recommendations and comments from previous guests. Maybe there is a reason for that? This apartment has the potential to be absolutely fabulous, but is very far from being so at the moment. Fowey itself is a wonderful place, full of character and history with plenty of good places to eat and lively, friendly pubs. We have had several holidays there and will definitely be back. However, further research on the internet has identified many other good quality rental properties - also with views and parking - and we will certainly look for somewhere else to stay when we return.

Owner's Response: After holding a five star grading for twenty years we were disappointed at this review two or three weeks after a Spring Clean. Whilst our caretaker sent two cleaners around immediately to put matters right this apparently did not suffice. It should be said that the customer went to some lengths to study each and every area of the apartment, searching under the microwave to find a few crumbs and under the hall carpets to discover some dust. When we spoke to her husband he volunteered things were by no means as bad as depicted and explained that his wife was "very exacting". To complain about a small plant and table housing the phone surprised us, and the plant will be removed. The welcome tray we did deliver had been set to one side. All furniture is top of the range purchased from a reputable store, and the kitchen is current (see photo). The "refurbishment" work only concerns a fresh coat of paint to this room as a result of, and only after, optional works have been completed in the Autumn. We will now re-double our efforts to ensure that all the matters raised get our full attention and standards are maintained.

Special interest holidays:

Fowey has always been famours for its authors, painters, celebrities and its historic interest. It is renowned for its sailing activities including clubs and instruction centres, and is a hot spot for sea and river fishermen alike. But not least walkers and ramblers and lovers of sea-scapes and the countryside.

The Apartment is just a few hundred yards from St Catherine's point (with stimulating views of the entire estuary) and the Cornish Coastal Path. In addition to the coastal paths one of my favouite walks takes me out on the car/passenger ferry - along the well known "Hall Walk" and back finally from Polruan by passenger ferry. On a Sunday I love to take lunch at the atmospheric "Fisherman's Arms" at Boddinick or one of the pubs in Polruan.

The local Readymoney cove is said to have been the inspiration for Daphne du Maurier's "Fisherman's Creek". There are many other examples in the local area which for many years was the home of this famours author.

Coast/Beach:

Readymoney beach is just two or three hundred yards away and leads on to St Catherine's Head and the beginning of lovely cliff walks. And likewise on the Polruan side, which is reached via the passenger ferry, the walks continue for many miles via such famous places as Polperro and Looe and more besides.

Travel:

Travel by car is well served by main artery motorways which run by the nearby Bodmin or approach via Plymouth on the southern route.

There is an excellent fast rail service which calls in at Par station approximately four or five miles away. Nearest main airport is at Newquay.

Distances:

The town of Fowey with its restaurants, pubs and shops is a ten minute walk away.
