Apartment in Swanage, Dorset, England - Very close to the beach and all amenities

Driftwood is a lovely, ground-floor apartment, ideal for holidaying couples or for a family. Situated at the quieter end of Swanage Bay, it is just 5 minutes walk to the nearest beach, which is sandy and gently shelving, making it safe for paddling . There is an allocated space for parking your car - a particular bonus in the busy summer months. It is situated in a residential area of homes and holiday homes, close to two hotels (open to non-residents ), a friendly pub and a handy corner store. Yet it is just a 15 minute walk into the centre of Swanage, with the pier, cinema, railway, amusements and entertainment as well as all its shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants... and more! The South-West Coastal Path is just at the top of our road, with wonderful walking and magnificent views and it is just a short drive to the ferry at Studland, for a trip to Brownsea island.

We are Lynne and Dave Smith. Originally from Manchester, for the last 35 years we have lived in the lovely Wiltshire village of Bromham , where we brought up our two sons . We are now the doting grandparents of two wonderful grandsons.

Why Lynne & Dave Smith chose Swanage

Our first visit to Swanage was for a Sunday walk, which we had found in a book of rambles. We immediately fell in love with the area and returned many, many times. When we decided to invest in a holiday home, Swanage was our immediate choice of location. We spent the best part of two years searching for the right property ( we came to know the local estate agents very well! ) and we finally found it in Driftwood.

It is located at the quieter end of Swanage, but still close to everything we need. We can be here in under two hours from our home in Wiltshire and Driftwood has become our much-loved home from home.

Over the first 3 years we loved sharing it with our friends and family, then felt ready to share it with others too. We feel sure that our guests will fall under the spell, both of Driftwood and of Swanage itself.

What makes this apartment unique

There is always something going on in Swanage - from the fun-packed Carnival week, through Lifeboat Week, to the Folk and Jazz Festivals and - our favourite -the unmissable Blues Weekends. We love the fact that we can wander into town and find sets of Morris Dancers or a train-load of railway enthusiasts eating fish and chips. We love that the beaches have their own characters, from unmanaged and natural at the North end of the bay, through the deck-chairs and Punch and Judy, to the rocky harbour at the South end.We love the friendliness of the local people and the variety of the local shops and businesses. We like the fact that there are few chain-stores. We love the walking and the people watching - and being able to return to Driftwood at the end of each special day.

Pillows and duvet are provided, but please bring your own bedding . Mattress protectors are provided, as are pillow protectors. Bedroom 2, has a comfortable double divan with drawers under, bedside tables, lamps, clock and wall pictures. There is a double wardrobe, with plenty of hanging space and two deep drawers. There is a travel cot available , which, of-course can be placed wherever you like!

Notes on accommodation: The apartment is on the ground floor and is one of five in an attractive purpose-built building. We find the garden a welcome extension to our holiday home, where we can eat al fresco or simply relax and sunbathe if we decide not to go to the beach. We redecorate frequently and hope that you you will find that Driftwood in immaculate condition. The immediate area is quieter than central Swanage, whilst still offering places to eat and be entertained. Please, strictly no smoking or pets. Outside: In front of the property there is a marked parking space for each apartment, set in a landscaped garden. There is a bench to sit and watch the world go by, or to take off your walking boots and there is a tap, should you need to wash muddy boots or sandy feet. To the rear is a pretty communal garden, with sloping lawn and a flat gravelled area, ideal for al fresco eating and sunbathing. By night, the gardens have automatic lighting. Linen Duvets, pillows, mattress protectors and bathmats are provided. Please bring your own bed linen and towels. The property is , of-course, cleaned in preparation for every let.

Lovely flat in a great location for the beach and the town

Flat was lovely and well equipped. Very clean, modern and warm . Close to the beach and town . Great place to spend a few days exploring the countryside or longer .

Great location, well laid out and clean apartment with good facilities.

We stayed here in August 2017 and loved the location; it was perfect for the beach as well as a short stroll into and out of town along the promenade in the evening. The apartment was very well kept and had all the facilities that one could want. There are also many places nearby to visit meaning that we did not need to go on too many long car journeys.

Excellent accommodation

Spent a long weekend with my wife and her sister in this well appointed apartment. The acomadtion was very clean, had everything we needed and having two bathrooms was a real bonus.

The property is well placed for visiting local attractions with Swanage centre being a 15 minute walk away and the beach 5 minutes.

We expect to return in the near future

In less than 5 minutes, you can be on the beach! Our lovely, safe, sandy beach is reached by walking down the chine a few metres from Driftwood. This is the quietest end of Swanage and, out-of-season, you may find the beach deserted. Nevertheless, there are public toilets at the foot of the chine and a beach cafe, open in the summer months. Further along, there are a couple more beach cafes and water sports. Middle Beach and Town Beach are busier and closer to shops and other amenities.

Should you wish to go a little further afield, Studland offers beautiful beaches, including one for Naturists.


The nearest bus stops are just around the corner from the apartment, with regular services to Poole and Bournemouth. It's worth a trip just for the fun of being on a bus that takes a ride on the ferry! Many of the buses are open-topped.

Swanage Railway is run by local enthusiasts and provides trips as far as Corfe Castle and Norden, often by steam train.

Ferries run to the lively resort of Poole and to Brownsea Island.

Boat excursions to Poole, Bournemouth or along the coast are available, as are fishing trips and diving excursions.

Bicycles can be hired locally.

Local taxi services are plentiful.

*Durlston Castle and Country Park Nature Reserve ( offering wonderful clifftop walks, beautiful woodlands and teeming with wildlife. A team of Rangers are on hand offering a varied programme of events. Don't miss seeing the huge Victorian stone Globe and exploring the renovated castle - and especially the beautiful photographic "interpretation" in the Visitor Centre. 1.7 miles from Driftwood

*Studland Beach and nature reserve. Owned by the National Trust , these are beautiful sandy beaches, with an area set aside for Naturists. 3 miles from Driftwood.

*Swanage Pier . ( Winner of Pier of the Year 2012, our lovely pier offers boat trips, paddle steamer., diving & water sports, kayaking, strolling, fishing, shop, cafe , museum and underwater camera. 1mile from Driftwood

*Swanage Railway (www.swanage Restored and run by volunteers, Swanage Railway offers heritage steam and diesel rides through 6 miles of stunning countryside, to Corfe Castle and beyond. Special events, a dining train, specials and galas and even train driving courses are available. 0.7 miles from Driftwood

*Brownsea Island ( www.national Brownsea Island is dramatically located in Poole Harbour, with spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills. Owned by the National Trust, Brownsea is a haven for wildlife, including red squirrel. Baden Powell took his first Scout troop to camp here in 1907. 7miles from Driftwood

*Dorset Water Park ( Wet and wild woodland obstacle courses in a natural setting.Food available, picnic area. 5.5 miles from Driftwoo

*Putlake Adventure Farm ( A must for children! A working farm, with a large variety of animals, plus play equipment, pedal karts,tractor rides, indoor soft play, cafe, etc. 2.3miles from Driftwood

*Farmer Palmer's Farm Park ( www. Family fun,featuring pig-racing, deer safari. milking demos, tractor rides, straw mountain and a maize maze. 14 miles from Driftwood

*RSPB Arne Nature Reserve This beautiful heathland reserve offers fantastic bird watching, as well as dragonflies and many other species . You will find an exciting programme of events and activities on offer. 10 miles from Driftwood.

*Corfe Castle ( National Trust's "Thousand-year-old royal castle shaped by warfare " is well worth a visit , as is the quaint and pretty village of the same name, in which it is situated. 6 miles from Driftwood

*Abbottsbury Swannery ( The world's only managed colony of nesting mute swans - and you can walk amongst them! In May, you can even watch the eggs hatching!. You might want to combine this visit with the stunning Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens and the Children's Farm. 35 miles from Driftwood

* The Square & Compass at Worth Matravers. Speciality ales and ciders , with anything you like to eat... so long as it's a pasty!

*Monkey World ( A fascinating day out to this Ape Rescue and Rehab Centre. 15 miles from Driftwood

Booking Notes:

We take a deposit of 25% of the cost of the holiday, to be paid on booking. The remainder is payable 8 weeks before the holiday begins ( we will send you a reminder.) If the holiday is being booked within 8 weeks of the start of the holiday, the full amount is payable. We also require a £125 damages deposit, payable 8 weeks before the holiday and refundable on return of the keys.

Changeover is on a Friday. Driftwood will be ready for you at 3pm and we ask you please to leave by 10.30am after your holiday.

Last-minute availability of short breaks may sometimes occur, so it is always worth contacting us to check.

On receipt of your enquiry we will send you our Booking Conditions and Terms of Hire. To secure a booking, you will need to accept these Terms and Conditions by signing and returning the Booking Form.

The Terms and Conditions include our policy on Cancellation, but, in a nutshell, this is :

cancellation 4 to 8 weeks before the holiday, we will refund 50% of balance paid
cancellation 2 to 4 weeks before the holiday, we will refund 25% of balance paid
less than 2 weeks before the holiday, there will be no refund.
(Please note that this policy differs from , but overides, the generalised "Owners cancellation Policy" policy given
below by Owners Direct.)

  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
