Village Centre, Family Friendly Apartment in Les Houches, Chamonix Ski Resort

Updated: 23-Oct-2016
Mountain apartment in the centre of the village of Les Houches. Perfect home from home for up to 4 adults and 2 children

The apartment sleeps 4 adults and 2 children with a double bedroom, a children's sized bunk bed just outside the bedroom (a coin montagne), and a comfy double sofa bed in the lounge.

The apartment is on the lower floor of a small chalet. As you pass through your private entrance you enter directly into the lounge.

The decor is clean and neutral with hints of warm purple running through the room.

The soft purple sofa opens up to become a comfy full size double bed for older children or a second couple.

The lounge has a feature Crystal Rock Wall built by the original owner, who enjoyed hiking around the local mountains, and collecting these beautiful stones along his way.

With two large windows in the lounge and french doors on to a garden terrace this large room is light and airy.

The terrace is lined with pine trees and in the winter you have an open view of the valley and viaduct below. A great space for making snowmen and playing in the snow.

Off from the Lounge is an internal storage cupboard for coats and shoes, and your skis and boots, keeping them warm over night. (There is also access to a larger store room for skis etc. if needed.)

The Kitchen is a large open plan american style kitchen along the back wall of the lounge.

It is kitted out with everything you may need while you are here:

* Full size cooker with electric ceramic hob and oven

* Microwave and Toaster

* Full size dishwasher

* Kettle and coffee machine

* Cheese and Chocolate Fondue sets

* Crockery and baking dishes

* Dining table with seating for 6

* Washing machine

* Children's plastic plates, cups and crockery

* Wooden highchair and Toddler booster seat.

The Shower room has a large bright mirror and basin and a wonderful walk in shower.

The bedroom is cosy with warm wooden walls and a view of the Aiguille du Midi from the patio door.

Apart from the great mountains outside you will find:

* Freeview UK TV Channels

* DVD Player, with a selection of dvd's to view

* Orange TV for French Guests

* Wifi access for your laptops and smart phones

* An iPod docking system

* An X-Box with a selection of Games

* Poker and Trivual Pursuit

* Books and Magazines

* Children's books, puzzles and toys.

*** If you are booking for a FULL WEEK or you are just a COUPLE or a SINGLE traveller do get in touch as we may be able to offer a discount on the advertised prices ***

Guests have access to their own self contained apartment which is totally separate to ours and their own patio garden space with table and chairs.

We live in the apartment above, so we are here to welcome the guests in and answer any questions they may have. If they have any other questions or encounter problems while they are here we are normally around to help. This is reassuring to our guests and they seem very comfortable with the set up.

Mountains for skiing and hiking in a village setting just 10 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Chamonix. Walking distance to all amenities needed for both holidays and living here. A mixture of French and English owned restaurants make it a very homely and welcoming place to visit.

Buses run up and down the Chamonix valley and the stops are just a minutes walk from the apartment. A local train station is just a 10 minute walk away which runs down to Saint Gervais les Bains and up into Switzerland

There is a great little Carrefour supermarket just 2 minutes away. It has a fresh meat and cheese counter and some great wines and breads.

The boulangerie, who also makes chocolate, is located opposite the Mairie’s office building, and we know have a new Fromagerie just opposite the chalet!

Le Chavanne just along the road is a typical french restaurant. It has quite a small menu written on boards around the room, and it does a good ‘menu du midi’ each day with a starter, main course and dessert for 13€. A good place to enjoy a pitcher of cold beer out in the sun.

Over the road is a new restaurant on the Carrefour level. Again it has a small menu but it does do a nice looking lunchtime deal for 13,50€. I haven’t tried it yet but it has been recommended.

If you travel further up the road there is an English run restaurant, Le Delice, which does fab burgers and has a little beer garden.

Opposite Le Delice is a takeaway Pizza place, lovely thin crust pizzas but only open from 6 - 9.

10 minutes walk further is an Indian restaurant, Gandhi, which offer an amazing lunch time menu for 7,50€ - You won’t need to eat dinner later that day.

If you turn right out of the house there are a few restaurants on the bend of the road, opposite the Bellevue lift. Le Basillica is a very friendly family run restaurant offering some typical and more unusual french food.

The kitsch Inn is just behind the telecabine building and is another English run place, with typical English food.

Les Houches sits at the foot of Mont Blanc, and from the summit of the ski area you will be thrilled by a 360° view of the surrounding area

The ski area of Les Houches extends from an altitude of 950m to 1900m.

From the summit one has a spectacular 360° view of the Mont-Blanc massive, and with 55 km of slopes meandering through the forests, you will discover the real pleasures of skiing.

The international reputation of Les Houches is built on the World Cup downhill piste "la Verte", but the resort is also an ideal terrain for learners, particularly with the new beginners' area, at the top of Prarion. The forest trails are a delight for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

There is also a beginners area in the village for the little ones.

When needed, artificial snow coverage is assured by more than 120 snow maker machines, positioned throughout the pistes of Les Houches.

As well as down hill skiing and snowboarding, there are Nordic Ski paths where you can discover winter nature in all it's beauty, on cross-country pistes 'Ski de Fond' and snowshoe paths 'raquettes'. Les Houches offers 2 Nordic Ski trails: Les Chavants offers free access to cross country skiers combining snow fields and forests, and the trails of the Prarion require a lift pass as they are at high altitude.

About the Owner

We moved over to the Alps in 2007, on our first wedding anniversary. We rented in Chatel and bought an amazing penthouse apartment in La Chapelle d'Abondance. These are both villages in the Portes du Soleil ski domain. We had a few good years in La Chapelle, running our catered chalet, but our hearts were always in the Mont Blanc area. Warren taught himself to snowboard in Chamonix back in 1997, and then arranged many boys holidays here after that. He introduced me to the area when i was pregnant, so because i missed out on the boarding then, he convinced me that we should spend our honeymoon here. It has always been a special place for us. We have been lucky enough to buy a chalet in Les Houches, just down the road from Chamonix. Living in the top & renting out the lower apart.

Aurelie G stayed 22-24 Nov 13.

One of the best places we've stayed at in the area. The apartment is spotless, beautifully decorated, functional, extremely well located and cosy. We (family of 4 + dog) stayed there for the weekend and had the best time. There were toys and books which the kids discovered with joy. Melanie is a gem, super friendly and easy going, great host. We would have stayed there more if we had had the opportunity and we hope to go back as soon as possible.

Sue V stayed 17-20 Oct 13.

Wow - Melanie's chalet was one of our last stops in a European road trip holiday and was the best accommodation of the entire trip. Mel has included everything you could possibly need and it's all in excellent condition and spotlessly clean. The setting is simply spectacular surrounded by breathtaking mountains on all sides. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here if we ever visit this part of the world again.

A lovely time had by all

  • 5 of 5

We were two travellers and our dog - we had a great stay, in a lovely property, with ample space. The owners were exceptionally helpful, even down to booking a vets appointment for our dog, and we had a fantastic time. A great location with a short walk to the gondala and an even shorter walk to the ski bus stop.

Great Accomodation and Location

  • 5 of 5

The appartment is very clean and comfortable, home from home. Toys and books available for children and excellent internet connection. Beds very comfortable, kitchen facilities great. We used the local bus service to the prarion lift area each day with ease, bus stop less than 1 minute walk from apartment. Hosts friendly and accommodating, evening catering services were super, large and tasty portions. We would defineately stay again and recommend to others. Thanks for a great stay.

From the Owner

Although living in a traditional farming village in the Alps was beautiful and serene, being in Les Houches is uplifting and inspiring. Not only because there is a buzz of life in the village, and everything is so convenient, but taking in the surrounding views, the scale of the mountains about you, gives you a sense of awe you cannot explain.
